Yes, it is legit. Required under the Patriot Act, I believe.

New checks -- do you mean new designs, or did you change banks?

In either instance, private retailers like Walmart should never be asking for your SS # -- your driver's license #, on the other hand, is appropriate, as they need a way to confirm your identity in their efforts to fight check fraud.

I have ordered checks from Walmart several times without a problem. You can even put your own photo on them!

They do need personal info you would not normally give, otherwise anyone could could order checks for anyone else account. It protects us all from check theft.

old account... just need new checks. I had been ordering my checks from a different company but don't need computer checks anymore

I order through a non-bank check printer and they have never asked for my social security. My husband works for the Fed Govt with bank regulations. He's on a flight right now but I can ask him when he lands if this is needed and see if this is something he knows about, if you want.

oh that would be great if you don't mind - thank you!!

Sure. He just landed and is driving home right now. I'll as him when he gets here.

When ordering checks for the FIRST time from a check printer, whether the account is brand new or has been open for years, will require the printer to verify the authenticity of the account. They must verify that the person ordering the checks is the TRUE owner of the account, hence the need for you to provide the identity information.

Otherwise, anyone who knows your account number and bank could order checks for themselves and start spending.

Once identity is verified, you can re-order anytime without providing that information.

Okay, my husband is here. Giving out your soc sec in order to order checks is not part of the Patriot Act. It is only for opening an account and the bank would need that, not the check printer. He said Wal Mart could be justified in asking for your soc sec to verify (it's just not part of the Patriot Act). There is no law that says they need it and no law that says they can or can not ask for it. I hope that makes sense. I can tell you that I have ordered from many different companies and none have asked for my soc sec and if they did, I would walk away. Even under HIPPA, doctors can't ask for soc sec any more so why would a check company need it?! :confused3

I hope that helps. Some times his job comes in handy (he helps with money laundering)

They do offer the alternative of faxing an existing check within 2 days, so if it makes you nervous you could just do that instead.

We Ordered from there and I did go ahead and provide it, which is unusual for me but I thought, I'm sure walmart has, oh, one or two lawyers making sure their financial services dept does things on the up and up.
