Wallet on a chain?

My 11 yr old brings his souvenir money with him to the parks in a wallet. Well last Christmas he wanted a particular wallet that happens to be a full sized bifold And it does not like staying in his kid sized pockets. It fits, but it's snug enough that I worry about him losing it without noticing on a ride or in the bathroom or whatever.

So, I thought it might be retro-chic to fit him out with a wallet chain that will tether it to his belt. Yet I recall TSA getting on a guys case a while back for wearing one and now I'm curious if Disney has a rule against it. Specifically, it would be a 16 inch length of fine chain. Like what you'd see on a choke chain made for a Chihuahua.

I recommend a small credit card holder for the front pocket that has a place for cash as well. It will also save him a lecture from his chiropractor 30 years from now.

I do not know about any rules about a chain not being allowed. I would suggest making it easy to remove in case he has to go through any metal detectors at WDW. There were a couple of times during my trip in January/February that everyone was being sent through. Then during my June trip there was only one time.

Only way tsa woukd know know about it is if a person walked through the metal detector or backscatter machine with it. And *of course* he would be talked to about it.

Doesn't mean you can't go to an airport or Disney with it. Just means you need to not walk through detectors with it.

And two or three years ago my son bought a wallet on a chain AT Disney. It was Mater themed.

That said, that's a long chain and he is GOING to get it caught on things. It's an absolute given. Getting out of rides, on a railing, etc. I would make it a less fine chain or shorten that length.

The chain will need to be removed before going through TSA. Disney security (even tho he is a child) will probably require as well. 16" is a darn long chain and yes, will prob get caught on numerous things. Perhaps the travel light mindset can be introduced, as well as "leave treasured belongings at home" mindset as well.

I agree that a chain will get hung up on something and possibly result in injury to your child. I don't like to be the over protective type, but I snag the cord on my headphones connected to my phone nearly every damn time I put 'em on.

Gosh yes!!! That chain is going to be caught on something!! I have had my pockets catch on chair arms, a jacket I was carrying have the 'string' get stuck in a corner getting off a ride, and on and on ... If I am walking behind you at Disney, don't be startled when I tap you on your shoulder to tell you that your shoelace is untied! 'Loose ends' at Disney are accidents waiting to happen.

I applaud your son for being responsible about his money!!

I don't have kids, so maybe this is not a good answer. My thought is to get him one of those waterproof cases that people get at water parks, and put it on a lanyard. (I have found that Disney lanyards are too long for me, so I looped the top over and stapled it down to make it fit better.)

He may have to go through bag check with that. I actually have one I bought at Disney and used to hook it on a belt loop but haven't used it in a few years.

This particular incident, the chain was required to be checked as it could be used as a weapon. Seems a stretch but there were some contemptuous airline security scares.

That is a long tether. Not sure where my mind was when I threw that out. It turned out I needed about 13 inches of chain.

Catching on things is a non-issue. The chain follows the wallet into the pocket, so very little is exposed. I often take a pocket watch on a chain and have never had a problem.

Perhaps the travel light mindset can be introduced, as well as "leave treasured belongings at home" mindset as well.

For most people, carrying a wallet isn't regarded as an undue burden. The rub is that 10 year old sized trousers don't always accommodate a grown up size wallet with enough allowance that will definitely not creep up and out while sitting in a ride seat.

And...unlike many, I don't consider having something looked at extra to be a reason to be afraid of bringing something. If they want to look at my box of double A IKEA batteries for a minute, that's fine. I'll still bring them. I always have plenty of time for security so it's no big deal. My brother is under the impression that you can't bring empty water bottles or cups through TSA so he doesn't, and tried to cast doubt in our minds about it. He was wrong. Etc. if they want to do a spot check on a chained wallet I have no problem with it, and I'll still bring it in the future. They'll almost certainly never do it again.

I would hate it if everytime the tsa required someone to check a carried item it made the news. I will say that this particular incident was shortly after the 2009 underwear bomber fiasco came into Detroit, which is where I saw this. And in November 2001 I had to check a set of "thumb cuffs" that I was using as my laptop bag lock at the time. Oddly, a few years later Lady Gaga made the new by taking handcuffs through TSA without issue and the TSA actually posted on their blog that handcuffs are not banned on airplanes. But the calculus of discrimination changes fluidly.

Either at TSA or Disney screening, I rarely complain about scrutiny. Even so, from time to time Disney has made decision on restricting items that were not, to my thinking, intuitive; so I try to anticipate or inquire on the subject. And often there are gray areas in the rules that allow discretion at the gate and it helps to poll the experiences of others.

An ideal response would be someone who has actually walked through screening with a chain hanging off them who could say "I wear a chain wallet and it's no problem" or " I usually wear a chain wallet but I get too much flack coming through Disney bag check to bother". Even short of this, though, I'm happy to hear the analysis and speculation the dis-crowd can provide.

The whole point for boys/men and wallets with chains is to have the chain hang out and loop down. Maybe your boy is different, but that's the point of the style.

Well the whole point of the style is for bikers to avoid losing wallets that get jiggled up out of their pockets when sitting on their rides for a long time. Which, is a lot like what I'm trying to accomplish. We are unconcerned with the Linkin Park aesthetics entirely. Also, the loop comes from clipping the chain to a front belt loop and pocketing the wallet in the back pocket. Following my example, my kiddo front-pockets his wallet so having a large loop of chain exposed would actually take some work whether the slack chain rides inside his pocket or not.
