Canceled all credit cards and debit cards, put alert on credit report, got new drivers license, filed police report, contacted social security (military I'd has as number on it) anything else I need to do? Should I pay for credit monitoring for a while?

Lost on a military base they got 1 20$ charge through before I noticed it gone.

I'm so sorry. What a freakin' headache.

Most smart thieves know you're going to do credit monitoring and the average most people do it for is two years. So in two years, they'll hit you up. :headache: This is what a cop-friend of mine told me. If you're going to do it, go a little longer than that.

I'm assuming your driver's license was in there? If so, I'd monitor the house pretty closely because now they've got your address as well.

Insurance cards? I'm not sure what, if anything, they could do with them, but I'd contact the insurance companies just to alert them.

Good luck...

...and I hope karma bites whoever did it in the butt!

If you have overdraft protection on your checking account / debit (to pull from savings), suspend that too. (Just in case.)

I have a permanent freeze on the 3 major credit bureaus due to identity theft (ex-husband's wife at the time...now another ex-wife) many years ago. This might not be an option if you need to open anything new soon, or get new insurance, etc. But if your accounts are already established it might be a route. You can remove it whenever with your special unlock code. There is a small fee (around $10 I think) to unlock.

Thieves stink

That's just so disappointing...

I once found someone's military ID in the locker room at the Y, and I literally waited near where I found it (holding the ID) for half an hour, hoping she would come back, and then when I had to go, I made SURE the employee putting it in lost and found knew how important that ID was. I didn't know it had SSN on it, but I knew it was pretty important!

If your library card was in there cancel it and get a new one. You are responsible for any charges to the card.

The police didn't do a report they gave me the paper I needed to get my military I'd but said to do a report after I get the info from my banks about the closed accounts... Is this correct? Everything I read said file a police report imeadiatey. The cops said it was probably another soldier which just makes me sad and I just hope he couldn't feed his kids or something. But the charge was to an Arab broadcasting network based out of MI with phone numbers that are disconnected do I highly doubt it.

Anyone using life lock will they do me and dh for the one price or will we have to get two accounts?

I would not use Lifelock, there's just too much negativity about it, and they don't offer the same things that other monitoring companies do.

Go over to the creditboards.com to find a reputable company to deal with. Make sure it allows you to soft pull your report about once a month. I have previously used Citi's Identity Monitoring, and was very happy with the way the program worked. I was able to pull a new report every 30 days, as well as a new credit score, and emails any time there was a ping against the report.

My aunt uses Lifelock and has no access to her credit reports through them (went through this a couple years ago when she was buying a house). They pulled her report when she signed up for it, but she never received copies of it. And they can pull it at any time (to keep tabs on it). So why shouldn't the person they're protecting be able to see the report as well?

that stinks! DS18 lost his wallet, no credit cards but he had his license, SS card a little money and 2 gift cards. DH told me to look into lifelock as well, I would hate to see someone ruin his credit before he even gets started. I think I will look into the others since someone posted issues with them. Good luck, I know someone whose credit got very screwed up from id theft, he even had trouble getting a job because of it. Linda :)

You really should not keep your SS card on you. When you get it replaced have him keep it at home.

Alot can be done with health insurance fraud. Report to your insurance company. Think of it, how much copay/coins/deductible could you be held responsible for. Remember this person is probably using your address, so these bills will go to you. Plus health claims that are not yours on your health ins. record is NOT good.

Would be pretty hard to use my insurance they would have to show my military I'd which I'm guessing won't look like them when ever I go off base for medical they take a scan of my military I'd ... Even if it's for the children they still scan my I'd.

that's good. identity fraud is so scary. Best of luck with this whole situation.
