Walking????

There are several problems with walking just like there are holding just in case reservations. These include that it affects other members and it raises management costs. Of course I understand there are 2 sides. Members can still adjust in the suggestion I gave but there is risk and there should be IMO. A change at 7 months is a cancelation and rebooking, most of the changes within DVC really are including Villa size/type and resort changes. It's this one situation that's the aberrancy, for it to be a cancellation and rebooking really is more consistent with how DVC works in general.

I see your point, I never knew about walking into a couple of months ago. We normally stay at our home resort AKV. We love it there, so if we can't stay somewhere else it doesn't bother us.
Do you think it's a problem because members are buying at resorts they don't want to stay at?

Problem might be too strong of a word. It's really more of a philosophical or preference issue than a problem per se. The issue, as I said before, is that I feel that members should have to think and have some skin in the game when they tie up a reservation or make changes and that it clearly increases costs (we can argue how much or how those are distributed but not that it happens). To be a cancelation and rebooking makes it consistent with all the DVC changes which are already a cancelation and rebooking and with how everyone else approaches the issue that I am aware of.

Wow. October sells out at the 11mo mark at BWV, and likely BCV?!

We own at BCV - I snagged a week (mon-sun) in a 1 br in early december 2014 for early november 2015. Our original plan was to fly in on Saturday and spend Sat/Sun at AKV (i.e. book those 2 nights at 7 months). We then found out/realized that F&W was extended. At the end of December, I tried to add on those dates in a 1 br at BCV: no bueno. So, the 1 br were gone not by 11 months but by month 10. I imagine the studios were gone even faster.

I've never walked a reservation and, yes, I do find it kind of sketchy. That said, if i start having problems getting a week in a 1 br at VGF at 11 months, then I'll do it.

at the end of it, not getting a 1 br at BCV worked out well: we are now arriving friday am and staying fri/sat at a BW garden cottage and then checking in at BCV on Sunday. We get an extra day since we're paying cash and not using points plus we get to stay in our favorite non DVC room.

I have successfully walked several reservations when I needed a BW grand villa 1st week of Dec or at some other high demand period. I also walked a 7 month reservation for a Grand Villa at Aulani for 1st week in June. Most of the time you don't need to walk reservations but if you want something special then you have to have the points to do it and the time it takes to follow thru. Would I have gotten same reservations without walking..NO. Having a lot of points gives you an advantage for walking. I bought where I wanted to stay 95% of the time so walking is usually not needed but I will say that with so many people buying at places they don't want to stay at, the 7 month window at BWV is becoming increasingly difficult to book even for a home resort. Everyone likes to make last minute trips and those are getting harder to book at the small resorts.

Thanks for clarifying. :)

The key to walking is getting the first reservation - and you do need to book at least 2 nights and then call daily to be successful. (You don't need to call daily if you have booked more than 2 nights for the first reservation. You only need to call before the 11 month window opens for the night(s) you want to add at the end of the initial reservation).

Hi - quick question on your comment as I may be walking a ressie this week for next April at my home resort (BW View specifically). If I book maybe 7 nights let's say a week in advance for 6-night stay , how do I avoid having to call daily? If I then wait a few days to start calling before the the 11 month window opens for the night(s) I want to add couldn't they be taken already by someone else who is walking a day at a time 11 months out ?

At 11 months, you don't have to call daily; you just have to call before your last day hits 11 months. If you hold the one day at exactly 11 months, you have that room tied up and nobody else can book it beyond your reservation.

Ah..I think I get it now. So if I want April 5-12th 2016 for example, and start walking April 29th this week with a 7-day reservation (thru the night of April 5th 2016) I can wait and call again on May 4th to extend it past the 5th for another 5 nights (April 6-10) , and then call again the following day (5/5) to get the 7th night (night of Aprl 11th). Sound right?
