We went to DLR for 2 short days and I was so tired. My feet and legs couldn't handle it. We are going to WDW in 16 months and I want to be in shape for this.

Any suggestions?

I know I am overweight (25 lbs) and don't exercise regularly. But walking at DLR has never really been an issue.

I wear tennis shoes and am usually comfortable.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Hi, I'm also about 25lbs over weight too. I was last year on our trip too. It is harder on you. I hate sneakers my feet are wide. Last year I wore Birkenstocks & Clarks. This year I am going to try Crocs which have helped me at work. I know everyone is sick of hearing this but your feet do feel better after a day in them.

I promised myself last year I would drop the weight the heat got to me for the first time also.

I would start now by taking short walks around the neighborhood. Maybe walk at a slow pace for 10 fifteen minutes five times a week. Gradually add on time as you feel stronger. This will make it less of a shock when you are doing all of the walking in the parks.
Luckily there are places to stop and take breaks in the park if it becomes to tiring. Good luck, and have fun on your trip.

IMO, get rid of the tennis shoes, you need a better shoe, it makes all the difference in the world. When you have on a bad shoe it will effect your whole leg and worse it will kill your knees and lower back. I also agree w/ the posts above, try going for little walks around your neighborhood. Do a little at a time. Carry a water bottle w/ you and time yourself. Timing yourself will challange you to do better and longer the next time around. Keep it going at least 3 days a week.. you will not only get more comfy w/ walking around, but you will lose weight. Before you know it, your extra weight will be off and youll be walking laps! :) GL :cool1:

sue -- just how old are those shoes you wore? might be they were good shoes in their prime but it's time for a new pair? i would suggest if finances allow you to go to a running store and get fitted for a pair of shoes. I buy running shoes though i'm a 'powerwalker' but the support of a running shoe i like better. anyhoo -- a good shoe-fitter will watch you walk and determine if you roll your foot, etc and what type/brand of shoe is best for you. once fitted you can reorder online cheaper.

Johnson's foot soak -- ever tried it? it really does sooth tired achy feet --

and most definately dropping those extra pounds will increase your stamina and energy. Check your library for Leslie Sanson's Walk Away the Pounds DVDs to try and if you like purchase a couple for those bad weather days. best thing to do is get moving and you'll strength those leg muscles up to carry you around the World!

What kind of shoe do you suggest?

Thanks for all the advise. I know I need to lose weight and I want to I am hoping with the summer coming it might help.

Shoes make a difference but I know the weight makes a huge difference. When I went in December I had lost almost 50 pounds and I noticed a difference in my endurance and my sore feet (or lack of actually). You should get a shoe made for walking. I like the Reebok Walking shoes with DMX - they are a little more cushiony. But there are lots of good shoes. Another thing that will make a difference is the socks - make sure they are cushiony and will breath some. Maybe changing them in the middle of the day may help too (that's what I do and I add a little powder and they much more comfortable). Your feet shouldn't hurt that much with being 25 pounds overweight (it does make a difference though) - I agree with starting to walk a little bit each day now. If you notice you lose some weight and still have problems I would go see a podiatrist as you may have other issues. I had to have arch supports made because part of my problem was my arches were falling (plus the weight). But I lost weight and the foot problems didn't get any better.

I too wear arch supports and also wear the Reebok walking shoes with DMX. With the additional weight loss, I notice my legs aren't as tired, but the inserts and the shoes have made the biggest difference with my feet. Amazing!
