I'm a total newbie to this board (but not to the Dis) - I think I have read once some info about people who walk in some of the Disney races/marathons and there is a certain pace to keep, etc. Is there a good thread somewhere on walking in the 5k (or 1/2 marathon?) type races?

I am just thinking of a motivation for getting fit - not looking to win the race - heh.;)

You can absolutely walk the race! Disney requires you to keep up a pace of 16 minutes per mile for most of the races. Feel free to jump into the monthly WISH team thread. You'll find walkers, runners and in-between!

Welcome!!!!

There are many of us who have walked 5K, 1/2's , full's and goofys. As long as you can keep the 16MPM you are good to go. Come join us in January, it is alot of fun!!!

I most likely will be walking quite a bit during the Half in Jan.

Yes, I am a walker. I've completed 20 half-marathons and one full. There are always a lot of walkers in the events I've done. It is a blast at the back of the pack!! Come on and join the fun

Walked the Princess 15K at Disney in 2008, the Race for the Taste in 2008, and plan on walking the 1/2 in January 2010. Go for it!

I have walked most of my Half marathons and 5ks and 10ks and 15ks. Lately I have been adding in some jogging, but my first Half Marathon I finished in 3hr 17min ALL walking!!! It can be done and Disney is a great place to do it with a 16min per mile pace. Just remember also that the official race time for sweepers starts when the last person crosses the start line so you usually have a bit of a "cushion" as far as time goes.

Thanks for all of the encouragement!:goodvibes

Since I am starting from zero - would you say I should register for a race that is a long way off (not sure what the longest off is - next Spring?) or wait until I can do that 16 min mile before registering?

I guess there is some balance of needing to get a registration in and making plans vs. knowing if I can do it.

Plus you know all the cool kids hang out at the back;)

You also get to see all the entertainment, as when I went through not all the characters where out and some of the bands where still setting up. I did not even know what I had missed untill I saw everyones photos!!!!!

Sign up for a race.....that will give you the motivation to get out there and train!!!! (works for me).

I walked my first half at the Princess last March. I started training for it before I actually signed up. But DH said that he kept hearing me talk about it but not actually seeing me commit to it! So, DD and I signed up about five months before the race. I'm glad I waited a bit to make sure that I felt I would a. train for it (not a big athlete here) and b. feel that I could make the imposed time limit. My advice, get serious about your training. Start keeping track. Find a plan (I used the Hal Higdon one I found on the internet). Since I am a retired teacher and principal, I kept it posted on the refrigerator and put stickers on each day as I completed it! When you start to feel as if you are really committed to the training, sign up!!

After the Princess, I kept on training. This weekend I am doing a 10K race. DD and I are signed up for the Disney Half in January. She is then going to do the Marathon for the Goofy challenge. I think that we will also do the Princess in March. (DH wants me to do it again. I guess so he can have another trip to Disney!)

Good luck!

You are definitely in the right place! Join us on the monthly walker/runner thread. There you can get to know many of the WISH Team and find all sorts of motivation.

Welcome to you!
