Walking dogs in a cemetery

As second generation sextants at our cemetery, we have no issues with people walking their dogs as long as they clean up afterwards, IYKWIM. WE have kids who learn to ride bikes there (safer than on the road with cars!), people walking their dogs, people who take walks...whatever. It's all good as long as you respect it. If you start running around through the lots, we might have issues ;) Stay on the paths, clean up after yourselves and it's all ok.

Speaking of which, today's PSA is to please not use glass containers for flowers and bury them partway in the ground and leave them there. When we hit them with the weedwacker or lawn mower it is NO FUN. Thanks! :goodvibes

I would have absolutely no problem with it as long as you clean up just as you would in a park.

Same thing with the large, beautiful cemetery in our town. After DH had a heart attack in 2010 we started taking walks through the cemetery. It has nice paved paths, lots of trees for shade, and because of the winding paths, you can make your walk as long or as short as you want.

People go jogging there on a regular basis, walk their dogs, teach their little kids to ride a bike, etc.

Since we're in MA, some of the older headstones are very interesting. We often take a break while walking and read the names and dates, and discuss the families, and what might've happened to them.

Some of the newer headstones have some pretty carving in them, some even have a picture of the deceased engraved into the marble.

Everyone has always been very respectful while there. It's a fairly large cemetery so if we see people mourning or a funeral going on, we park way on the other side of the property.

Unless there are signs posted, or some other reasons, I don't think it's disrespectful to do the above activities in a cemetery. IMHO.

I don't have a problem unless people don't clean up after their dogs. I recently visited my parent's grave on their anniversary and almost stepped in a big pile. It wasn't on a grave but very close to it. Now we often see rabbits and other small wildlife around there but this was no rabbit's droppings. It is in the heart of the city so I doubt it was anything like a deer either.

I walk on my meal break at work, and there is a large cemetery a few blocks that I walk through. People walk their dogs and jog there all the time. I have no issue with that.
Only odd thing I have seen is at the cemetery my grandparents are buried in. It is a very popular place for people to have their wedding pictures taken at. This is Cypress Lawn in Colma, it is very pretty, but seems like an odd place for wedding photos. People love this backdrop.

I had my bridal pictures taken in a funeral home. They had a great grand staircase.

I think that probably the people that are buried there would be happy to know a dog was visiting.

This ^^ I would be very happy to have someone with their dog visit the place where I am buried. It even would not bother me if the dog had to relieve itself as long as it person picked up after it.

OP it sounds to me like you are respectful when you are there. Continue to enjoy your walks with your dog. I have a feeling there are more than you and your dog enjoying your walks.

I second this!

Anyone else remember 40 yrs ago when sociologists used to predict that in the future cemeteries would be used as the only green spaces left and people of the future would use them for picnics and such?

I was at the cemetery on Saturday and saw something I had not ever seen going on there. about 6-8 people had a sheet spread out next to a grave with fruit all over the sheet and were sitting there eating- as if that wasn't strange enough when we finished putting flowers on who we were there to visit we drove past them again and noticed they actually had a bb out and were cooking burgers- the oddest thing I have ever seen in a cemetery!!

I grew up a few blocks from a large cemetery and was taught by my parents that a cemetery was a place of respect and the only reason to go in one was to visit a grave. We were not allowed to go into it to ride our bikes, go sledding even though in the back was a great hill to slide on. The only animal allowed as far as my dad was concerned was a horse pulling a cason. Walking our dog was not allowed. We couldn't even cut thru to go to friends houses on the other side. We had to go around.
