The people you'll meet along the way are CMs going home, fellow guests going back to hotels, and perhaps a homeless person or two settling in for the night on a bus bench. That's been my experience, at least.
If you are nervous, just walk the slightly longer way by crossing at the big crosswalk and walking along the hotel side of the street.
If you aren't nervous, do the shortcut way of walking along the
disneyland side...fewer people but that makes the walk faster. You are in full sight of cars (who will be coming towards you, which I actually feel is safer than having my back to them, as long as I'm on a sidewalk, which you are on that walk), hearing distance of the hotel-side, viewing distance almost the whole way (there's some landscaping at one point in the median)...
I feel safe. Of course one must keep one's head up, eyes moving, being aware...no headphones or talking on the phone, etc. But that's just normal safety.
