Walking around Tortola

Hello! This is our second cruise, but the first time to Tortola, BVI. We are not planning to book any sort of excursion at this stop. However, we might like to get off the boat and just walk around a bit. Does anyone have any experience with Tortola? How easy is it to walk to lunch or shopping?

There is a small development surrounding the port area with a restaurant or two and the typical Caribbean jewelry stores.

We just got backdrop the Eatern Caribbean cruise.
Downtown Tortola isn't all that developed. There's shops right outside the ship dock, and some souvenir stands nearby. We tried going to a spice shop but they were closed on vacation the month of Sept. Saw a couple of Internet cafes, but really not much to see otherwise aside from local shops.
We loved the excursion we did, the beach and snorkeling were great.

When we were there in Janaury, (going back in a 18 days..not that I am counting) they were refurbishing and building up port shops. There was a little shopping area right outside the gates that I felt very uncomfortable walking around in. We ended up getting back on the ship. This time I booked an excursion.
St. Thomas was a much in regards to having a developed and safe port and shopping area, but this time we have an excursion for ziplining.

We were at Tortola in July. We took a taxi to Cane Garden Bay. That was a great beach and they had multiple food vendors as well as a server walking the beach for drink orders. Get a Painkiller!

I agree, we did this and had a great time. The food over here was very good and the drinks were cheap! We did also walk around outside of the port area, lots of locals all selling the same thing. There is Pusser's, which is a restaurant/put and gift shop...it is right outside the port area, just a few blocks down to the left. Right past that is a gift shop that has quite a few tshirts and souvenirs (hint, the lady working there told us that many of the things the locals sell in their stores on the walk over are bought from this store at wholesale.) We asked this lady if there were any other shops and she took us down a walkway to get on the road right behind her store (of you could exit the back door of Pusser's) and there were a few more shops. You just have to be willing to do a little bit of exploring

But for real, get a Painkiller!! So good!
