Walking a split-stay reservation

Hey gang,

Ive been scouring the member rules - and I can't seem to find anything that specifically relates to this, so I'm wondering if someone here knows the answer or can point out for me where I can find the answer:

I am planning a trip that will ultimately be a split stay at the same DVC resort, where the two reservations will have different room categories (we're having friends come in towards the later part of the trip to stay with us). Since it's a popular time of year (Christmas/New Years), Im considering "walking in" the second reservation a little bit.

Here's where I run into a bit of a quandary. I've already secured my first reservation. Obviously, the second reservation's check-in date would be the check-out date on my first reservation. So the question is, if I walk in the second reservation, I would effectively be holding 2 different reservations with a few overlapping dates - is this prohibited by any DVC member rules? and if so where can I find the rules to reference?

Thanks, in advance, for any further insight you can provide!!

It is not against the rules to hold two overlapping or concurrent reservations. I currently have three that overlap each other. One is a reservation for my immediate family. The second is for a friend who may or may not travel when we do and the third is for a studio at a second resort where check out is the day after check in for another reservation.

They’re your points. DVC is not going to prevent you from using them how you wish.

Although, as your plans solidify, you should cancel any days that you know you will not use so that other members can book their vacations.

I currently have 5 rooms booked of different types for over the 50th because we are not yet sure who is going..if any of us so I booked options.

I also have an extra overlapping night in July for a friend. I got her LV at VGF but attempting SV. Just got one of the two nights so I booked it and made the waitlist for only the one we are now missing!!

Basically, you can book how ever many rooms that tote points will allow!

The problem with walking more than one reservation is that you could get in the situation where you are successful with one reservation but are too slow to move the second (or third, or forth) in time. I got in this situation at VGF for a December trip. I have a 2bdrm SV starting Dec. 5th and GV starting Dec. 12th. [Don't get me started on dates missing at 11 month + 1 day.]

December 2021? Hope it all works out.

It felt like gladiatorial combat this year, but I finally got what I needed (7 consecutive days at the end of December) in 3 different reservations that still need to be merged. Had to pick up a few days after the walkers had moved on, and had to modify my placeholder reservations (in higher points categories/larger rooms) each day to free up points to book. It was ugly.

Thanks! What's added to the challenge is the 50% borrowing restriction and my points spread across 2 different contracts. Not being able to borrow a little extra on one contract made walking harder. Also, in an effort to not muddy up the OP with details - I didnt mention that Im actually trying to secure 3 different back-to-back room reservations, not 2. The reservation in the middle might be canceled if we end up going on a cruise. Cruise probably won't happen, but I want to be in a position where if I cancel the middle reservation, I won't lose old banked 2021 points. I concluded that I cant walk in that second reservation without using those old points. So that leaves me with trying to nail the reservation tomorrow at the stroke of 8am, no walking. Hopefully Im fast on the trigger. (post-edit: I was able to get that middle reservation)

At least I'll be able to walk in the third reservation......

I just realize by reading you that walking can need a larger amount of points than the final reservation.

Depends. If you're walking in from a week out, and you only have a 5 night stay planned, then yes. If you're walking from a week out and you're planing a week stay - you might not need more points. However, If you're spanning a different points-season, then you might need more points. For me, I was walking in during xmas week to secure a grand villa. So I needed alot of points just to get a night or two earlier than my target night.

In theory you could walk a reservation with just 2 days and modify daily. The downside is that if they take rooms out of the rotation for maintenance you could get blocked out by other walkers who have 4/5/7 days booked at a time.

We always learn something on this board . Thank you .

Someone PLEASE clue me in. What does the terming "walking" or "walk" a reservation mean?

It's just booking a reservation at 11 months ahead of when you're actually wanting and then gradually adding days to the end and dropping days from the beginning until you get to the dates that you want. It can also be done at 7 months but those can be blocked at any time by owners at the resort you're trying for.

Is this something you can modify yourself or do you have to call member services? I'm a newbie! Thanks for schooling me!

You can modify trip dates yourself online - modifying an existing reservation takes you to the calendar, and from there you just drop the dates at the beginning of the trip and push it forward by adding to the end. (added to say: as long as they're available, of course)
