walkie talkies

Are these allowed on board?

From the DCL website:

The following items are permitted but with the following restrictions:
•Walkie-talkies and two-way radios (e.g., Motorola, JVC). Please be aware that the amount of steel in the ship's infrastructure may cause some "dead zones" and the radios may not transmit in these areas.

I will point out that in many foreign ports Walkie-talkies may be illegal. And onboard can be a source of irritation to fellow passengers.

"Can you hear me?" SSSSSSSSS

"CAN YOU HEAR ME?" Shhrkkk, skwakkkkk,, screech

CAN YOU HEAR ME?" Errrk, skwakkk, schreekkk, !!!!!!!

Plus, there may be multiple people trying to use the same channels as you, causing more confusion.

Each stateroom gets two wave phones. They are like small cell phones that allow calls and text.

You can also rent an additional one... They also work on Castaway Cay.

Walkie talkies might not work across the metal works and decks.

You can bring walkie talkies. They don't work very well on the ships. But there really is no need each cabin has two wave phones. They are like old style cell phones. You can make free calls to each other as well as text. But the key board is the type you have to hit the # keys to type the letter.

Didn't know this. Glad I asked the question. Thanks for the info.

I'll add the wave phones only vibrate, they will not ring audibly. :worship:
This can, and does result in missed communications.
The display does indicate those missed calls/text.
We just often visually check the wave phone display for missed comms.
This became the norm for us. We would call/text on one of the other wave phones and accept/know it would/could be 30 minutes for a call/text back as no one could reasonably feel the vibration generally.

Once we realized this limitation/reality, life became more calm aboard. ;)

Also, if someone calls a wave phone attached to a cabin #, and no one answers, as who could generally as it vibrates, this call will ring however many times, then default and ring within the cabin. This could/is be a huge annoyance for those who nap or what not within said cabin.

I thought I read about a way to solve this. :confused3 Don't recall.
Years ago pax reported they couldn't even unplug the phone, to disable ( safety).

Good luck figuring out the phone system and the bedside Ipod clock, even with instructions. lol. :lmao:

Enjoy

Sorry to be a party pooper, but I have found that folks with those walkie talkies can be….well, really annoying sometimes! Hearing someone next to you gabbing on a phone can be a bit annoying anytime, but add in the static and crackling noises? And the, "What?? I can't hear you!", etc….. :crazy2: The Wave phones worked extremely well for us last week on the Dream and we had 2 little ones in the Oceaneer Club, so those phones were used. ;)
