Walkie talkies in DLR?

Hi there

I'm new to Dis boards (and forums in general) and I'm not sure if I've done this right. My sister, brother in law, 2 kids (11 & 5), my boyfriend and I are all going to DL on March 29th. Because we are in a group of 6, and may split up occasionally, does anyone know if walkie talkies are allowed or even usable in DL so we can easily locate each other?

I've seen people use walkabout radios to talk to each other. I think finding a good channel with not to many people on it is the hardest part. We have found that cell phones work MUCH better.

We were thinking of taking ours too...curious about other's experiences too.
We have 2 cell phones but they are much more expensive to replace than 2 walkie talkies!

We use our Motorola walkie-talkies at DL and WDW. They are great for communicating with family and friends. Since we're from Canada, our LD charges would be huge if we used our cell phones.

The previous poster is correct in saying that the hardest part is finding a channel that no-one else is on. To solve that problem, in the past few years, we've upgraded and bought Motorolas with sub-channels. That gives us more channels to choose from.

First of all to the DIS! I think you will find exceptional people with a bunch of knowledge to share on the boards. DL board is great and VERY friendly as we extablished last week!!!

We have brought our walkie talkies to DL before that we use for camping. We could not find a channel that didn't have any people on it. We tried using one with fewer activity. My husbands name is Jeff and apparently I was talking to another Jeff in the park and didnt even know it!!! There was so much interaction that I couldnt make out his voice he just kept answering when I said "Jeff where are you?" It was pretty funny but frustrating.

After that we only use our cell phones. Since we have a family plan we dont use any minutes and it works out great no interference. We just keep them on vibrate and silent in case you are in a ride or if you can't hear because of noise outside you can still feel it ring.

Same thing for us. Motorolas. In year 2000 the walkie-talkies worked great at DLR. Then too many people started crowding the channels and they became less useful. We have bought newer ones with more sub-channels, and they again worked great at WDW last year.

We turn ours on high and vibrate and I keep it in my front pocket when I know we are apart. I don't turn it off on rides, I just make sure it doesn't get wet.

In our case, we are together 80-90% of the time, and leave them off during that time to conserve batteries. When we decide to split up, we turn them on. When that happens, we do not turn them off on rides unless we are in a theatre or something where it is quiet and likely to be heard.

I've used walkie-talkies in WDW and they've worked, but finding a clear channel was hard. We ended up coming up with a 'unique' phrase to start each conversation. That helped us know when the voice on the other end of the walkie-talkie was from our group or one of the other people using the same channel.
