Walkers Wanna Compare Notes??

Well just got back from 3 miles outside with Miranda. It had snowed a bit so the roads were slick but we managed. It sure felt good to be outside and get some fresh air.

We discussed that if on Sunday the 13th we're up to it we're going to the AK to cheer on our Wish team and the hop into the Yak and Yeti for some lunch and to celebrate Miranda's birthday.

Depends on the soreness of our legs or feet. If not we'll be hanging round the Y&B club having a Kitchen Sink. Yup either way it's a win/win situation.

Have a great day, I'm off to the shower and then a noon time massage. Life is good.

Nancy you wonderful ladies could never look ugly, you glow to much with goodness from within.

Jeanne, that Polar Bare thing, isn't that where you get naked in public and then jump into freezing water? Oh Mypopcorn::

Denise, I don't think any of us trained as we planned. Don't ya just hate it when life gets in the way?:rolleyes1

Kim, I hear ya babe, Erica and I did about half what we planned to do.:)

Crazed Tapering Panda:hippie:

I will continue to do half-marathons because they require relatively little training, so Nancy and I just may decide to do the Donald next year.

So ... you guys have all been holding out on me. Here I was concerned that with the Hunchback of Notre Dame-look (Boo-Boo Panda--thats the church in France I am referring to, not the second-rate Catholic college in Indiana) and lack of any training that I was better off not trying the half until I was somewhat healthier. Now I find out the little secret that half-marathons require little training. Good thing I thrive on rejection.

Yep, the secret is out. Little to no training involved. ;) :teeth: Actually, that's what we want people to think so we can smoke them at the finish line after we we've trained for the darned thing.

I know what Jeanne is talking about. It's all relative. COMPARED to the full, training for the half seems a lot easier. In reality, the half takes A LOT of training...hard training. Going from couch potato to half-marathon was one of the hardest things I have ever done in my life - both physically and mentally. Training for the full is kicking my butt but I don't seem to have all of the wayward emotions and complete exhaustion attached to the training like I had before. And, because the training for the full takes up a lot more of my time, it seems that the half doesn't require as much training. Does this make sense?

Now, whether I finish the full or not is another story. If it's hot and humid, I could be in trouble. :scared:

Gee, I really stuck my foot in my mouth with that one didn't I. What you guys don't realize is that in my eternal never-successful quest to lose weight over the years, I have become an exercise fiend. Anybody else who works out as much as I do would look like a twig. So what I meant was that relatively speaking - compared to my normal workout routine - training for the half was really not much of a step up FOR ME. Sometimes when you write stuff, it comes out sounding very harsh and I apologize for that. I realize now it was very insensitive to all those of you struggling to prepare for the half and me sounding like it's just a walk in the park. Please forgive me.....you guys are all awesome, especially you Bill. Can we still be friends?

Everyone take a deep breath and relax. I know that a half marathon cannot (or at least should not) be done with little to no training. If that was the case, everyone would be doing them. I sure hope Boo-boo Panda is able to handle all you princesses in January without my ... ummm ... help{?}.

Have a great evening everyone.

Everything is relative. Training for a 1/2 makes training for a 5K seem easy. Training for a marathon makes training for a 1/2 seem easy.

Bottom line it takes work. Some work is less intense than others.

Good job to all regardless of race :thumbsup2

Hi Susie--- Is your back doing better?

I did no training last night. Coming home in the dark and rainy weather, just takes all the motivation out of me to go to the gym. The thought of getting on the boring TM doesn't help with the motivation. I am so ready to get back into classes at the gym and a different form of physical exercise other than walking. Thanks goodness we are suppose to be tapering, I'm just doing it faster than you should. Still will do my LW this weekend.

Jeanne all of us in training know exactly what you were saying so don't feel bad about it. I would never had thought that training for a half was easier until I trained for a full. Other than the first 12 and 14 miler I did when training for the half, the other walks were not things I hadn't done before.

Of course the sun is out today while I'm stuck at work and rain is forcasted again for the weekend. This is every weekend since I have been back from WDW. Wonder how the weather will be on race day?

Have a great day everyone.

Nancy

Nancy: don't feel bad about not training much this week. I think most of us are in the same boat. Since my 20-miler last Saturday I have only done one short fast walk and no XT at all. The fact of the matter is that it's Christmas week and everybody's schedule is just shot to you-know-where. I don't feel bad at all about it because my kids are home so infrequently and I definitely prefer to spend my time with them. Furthermore, I have not been a slacker until now so I feel like I am somewhat entitled to it. I will be sure to get my 10-miler in this weekend which is probably more important than the other things. Next week, when everyone is gone, I'll be right back on schedule with the usual short walks and XT.

Hi guys and pretty princesses.

I havn't had much time for chattering on here this week, this is supposed to be our busy time of the year but our business is way down. Last week we did $44K at the store and this week we are only at $20K and today is the last day of the business week.

I work at a Lenscrafters store and our business is way down all over the country. In early November Good Morning America had a special about the quality of glasses at different optical stores. Lenscrafters had the lowest quality of the stores checked. Our business has been way down every since.

Kentucky and most of the eastern states require that there be a licensed optician on duty to check the quality of the glasses if there is not an Eye Dr there to over see the operation. Texas where the investigation took place doesn't require opticians to be state licensed. But that special made it look like all the Lenscrafters put out an inferior product.

Sorry about takeing up board time ranting about this but it's been a real sore spot for me lately. I have people who drive from Nashville, 60 miles away. to buy at my store because they like the service and quality we provide. They have a lot of optical stores there to shop at but come here to get their glasses.

Anyway I'm off to the Gym for some treadmill and pool fun on this freezing morning in paradise.

Tapering Panda:hippie:

Dave--- I had not read or seen the story that was done on Lenscrafters. It just shows the power of TV misinformation or partial facts. Did Lenscrafter make a rebuttal to that segment that was shown?

I did my 10 miler today at an even 15 minute pace completed in 2:29:12. My legs weren't tired after it and was able to do my cool down walking up the hill to my house. The only down side was that I hadn't put the lid back on the gatorade correctly at mile 4 and a little later I am feeling a wet butt. At least today it was 49 degrees and partly cloudy so it wasn't to uncomfortable. I have more confidence after completing the 20 miler last week and having a good 10 miler this week. I think that if I do a 15 minute pace at least for the first half I should be ok to finish the race.

Jeanne--How was your LW today? Really I only had slight guilt not getting much training in this past week. I feel the same way at this point doing a little slacking on midweek training isn't going to hurt us.

Time to get some laundry done.

Nancy

Dave, that's really too bad. Mark and I go to Lenscrafters for our glasses. I wear contacts most of the time but I do wear glasses on the weekends and will wear them during the 1/2. Mark had a difficult time with his glasses fitting because of the tri-focal and the tech that worked with him was GREAT. He won't go anywhere else and most of my friends go to Lenscrafters. We do have an optician in the store area but the two have really not "worked" together when we've been there. It's more of a convenience thing for us.

Mark's business has been down this year - signs/truck lettering - who's buying new vehicles when there's no work?

I'm in insurance, we still have a lot of customers but if policies are based on payroll and sales, that will make our income much lower if they too are lower.

My son just got laid off of his job - construction for the winter (he worked for an explosive company)

Miranda's restaurant has laid off employees this week. I'm sure GMA did not help but business is DOWN everywhere, yet the presidential candidates are talking about Health care. MMMMMMMMMMMmm, we need a job to pay for Health care. We want good paying jobs not 3 part time jobs to make ends meet.

That is why I considered canceling our trip for the 1/2 but having invested $600 for all the registrations, I was not about to lose all that. We'll suck it up and go.

Denise, yes to everything you said.

I'm glad you guys are still coming.

Speaking of Lenscrafters, I get 50% friends coupons for glasses. If anyone doesn't have an insurance that would be better let me know. They are good at any Lenscrafters.

Taper Panda:hippie:

Dave, I wish I could help you out, but the only Lenscrafter I know about is YOU! When I get richer, I will come see you for my products! :goodvibes

Denise, sorry to hear about layoffs and stuff.

Happy thoughts today, it's bright, sunny, warm and we are Healthy and still happily married. I have some great kids in my life and two good legs to carry me anywhere including 13.1 miles!

It's a great day here in NH. My vacation is over and I didn't win powerball last night so it's off to the salt mines tomorrow and then Tuesday off.

Take care my friends, go and make it a GREAT day - we deserve it!

Yaaaaa, guess what tomorrow we can say we are going do Disney this month!!!!

Dave: Sorry to hear business is down, but nice to know people love your service so much they will drive just to come to your store.

Denise: I am also in insurance, I am a broker. My pay is salary based but my employer makes his off commission, so when premiums are up, that is good for him but bad for us brokers as we are doing more remarketing, but when premiums are down he makes less, this could effect raised and bonuses....just can't win. Sorry to hear about your layoffs.

Nancy: WTG on your 10M......

I finally have gotten in some training, did just under 15K on Friday, outside of my right foot was so sore I couldn't continue, Mike seems to think my shoes where to tight, I have been working this new ones in slowly, I might just have to use my old ones, but then I did just over 8K yesterday and they where fine so we will see how it goes. I plan on getting in alot of K's over the next 9 days, then rest for the 2 days before the 1/2 while hanging with my friends at WDW.

I haven't kept up on all the posts so just checking on the smaller meet on Thursday, are we just going to meet at the expo at 3:00PM???? Can't wait to see you all.

Kim

Kim we will probably meet a little eariler so we can be close to the front of the line. I'll shake Robert's tree and see if I can get him to come out. He is our expert on when to get there for the lines. I think Linda sold him for medical experintation so I might have to hunt him down.

Yes Disney is coming, we leave in 6 days.

Are all the princesses ready?

Kim shoes should never need to be broken in. Did you change Brands or models?

We are going out today for 6 to 10 miles not sure yet, just going to go as we feel.

Walk strong and rest well Warriors

Party Panda:hippie:

I think something is going on with the boards.....I haven't gotten any notices in about 2 days.

My 10-miler went very well. I gave my Garmin to Jason who ran his 10 in about an hour and fifty minutes. I used my watch and it looks like my pace was just about an even 15-minute mile. I felt like I could have gone on much longer. Afterwards, however, I was very sore in the back of my thighs. This was a new experience but it probably had something to do with not doing any other exercise all week. Today I was back at water aerobics and that felt good. I can't believe that 2 weeks from now this will all be over.

Dave and Denise: sorry about the bad luck at work. It's been a bad year for us also, but relatively speaking, we are so much more fortunate than most that I can't complain. My husband is getting very tired and would love to retire. As the owner of a solo practice, he shoulders every responsibility by himself and I can see it taking its toll. At this point, he's too old to join someone else and too young to quit working. I keep hoping for a few more good years so maybe he can semi-retire by 60, but 2007 wasn't one of them.
No complaints though....life is good.

Happy New Year to all.

We have been down here over the last week so hiding out not to drag down all of your great accomplishments in training and soon races.

The new year will have lots of changes for us. No Goofy:( , I will be losing my major client(he gave me a 3 month notice 3 days before Christmas, knee surgery(that will put me on crutches for 3-4 months), and when I get better(April-May) we will be moving from the Lake. This means we will move from a condo to a 1 bd apartment for the unforseen future. We both will have to be looking for jobs but I nobody will hire someone on crutches. It will be an interested next 6 months.

Linda and I will be at WWoS at around 2pm(when 5K opens) to pickup my 5K packet(which I might do at a 20 min pace) and than head over to get marathon packets. I think a beverage will be needed at All Star Cafe after all the work getting our packets:)

They are predicting a major winter storm(biggest in years) Thurs-Sun with 5-10 ft of snow:scared1: Another on Monday. This will cause major air traffic issues for us and others going into/out of Denver. This would be the icing on the cake if I get stuck in a airport:sad2:

Just got a call back from Dr office that surgery is moved up to the 21st. 3 weeks from Thursday:scared1:

See you all in a week:)

You know Robert this might be the time to go on and look at moving to Florida so you can be right here for the sunshine fun. Be worth looking at the local paper while you are here to see what the job market looks like. Then remember that we have some business to discuss also.

When I was in the Air Force, I decided to finish my degree and get a commission. When I started back to get my BA in Phycology and counselling they were talking all degrees for commissioning. By the time I finished they were only taking science and computer degrees. So I missed out on a commission. I decided to be the best NCO I could be and shortly before I retired I was chosen to write the manual for First Sgts, so I guess I did ok as an NCO. Over the mantle of my fireplace is the very flag that flew over the US Capital on the day I retired. Next to it is a framed certificate signed by a congressman confirming the flags history.

That's only one of the many times I have had to change routes in the middle of the road. We never know what tomorrow will bring but you are reasonably bright so you will do fine. Just don't tell anyone you have walked an ultra till after they hire you.
