Walkers Wanna Compare Notes??

Dave--- Good luck to you and Erica on your race tomorrow.

Jeanne--- Just go get that pedicure. My toes are terrible, I now have 4 gel toenails since my great toe and second toe on both feet have fallen off after being black. I tried to explain to them what happens, but they don't care. At least they look good in the sandals. It was great meeting Cam and Howard. We could have talked for hours. The guys hardly get to say anything, you know how it is when the 4 of us get together. I have to share with you that Brian gave us a mini lecture about meeting up with people we met on the internet. I guess he thinks we are going to meet up with an axe murder sometime. You know how as children you lecture them about not talking to strangers, I guess that was his version to us. :confused3

Nancy

Thank you for the race luck Nancy. We can always use some.

We have meet a lot of people from the running forums and some from the walking and several from the wish team. We have found everyone to be wonderful interesting people. I think the trouble makers avoid actually meeting anyone. We have met people we would never have met any other way. It's wonderful to meet people who would not normally be in your circle of friends. Our best friends are a lady banker in Cincinnati, an office manager in Tampa and a CPA in williamsburg. We would have never crossed paths without the boards. I talk regularly with a famous writer who also racewalks.

Nancy, black toenails mean your shoe size is to small. The toes hit against the front of the shoe especially when going down hill. Also you need plenty of room to wiggle your toes in the shoe.

Everyone have a great Labor day.

Dave:hippie:

Thanks Nancy, we felt really great about it, such a mental hurdle. I wasn't even sore yesterday or today...whew!! Hope you had fun at the fair!!!

Dave and EricaHow was your race????

Today is a rest day, going to catch some football, get some house work done and just relax. Back to work tomorrow.....:headache:

Enjoy the rest of your weekend all.

Kim

Kim: great job on the 19K! That's just about a half-marathon....yay!

Dave and Erica: not sure what time your race was, but I'm assuming it's probably over by now. Hope everything went well for you both.

Nancy: sounds like you had a fun visit with Cam and Howard....and I'm not surprised the guys didn't get a chance to say much. Funny story about Brian.....he probably got really freaked out after meeting us!
Question about ther gel nails: I've had them on my fingers and they always start them out with a fake tip, then afterwards you just need fill-ins. How did they do that on your toes?

We played golf 2 days in a row so that was my XT walking for this week. We have a Labor day picnic to go to later. One of our golfing couples is going to Germany on Wednesday for 2 weeks, so we're having an Octoberfest theme. Another one of my friends (Fran) had knee surgery on Tuesday and didn't want any visitors in the hospital, but know she is at a rehab facility and is willing to see people so we may stop by this afternoon. Other than that, it's been a nice quiet holiday weekend.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend, everyone!

Did 4.5 miles today. It was only suppose to be 3 miles, but I felt good so did a little extra. Norm went to the gym for his exercise, but I walked mine outside. He wanted to do some weights and I hate doing weighs by myself. I will wait for pump class tomorrow.

Jeanne--- Can you pm me Fran's rehab address and I will mail her a card. I didn't know she had surgery, I hope everything went well. They did use tips on the big toes put just used the gel on the smaller and then I just got them filled in. I stopped getting my finger nails done the beginning of the year as it just was taking to much time with training to work in that fill in every couple of weeks. The toenails don't grow as fast so can go every 6 weeks or so. You would never know to look at them that they are gel.

Dave-- The black toes are sort a combination of the way I walk more than the shoes. I tend to grip my toes for some reason, I really notice it when I have sandals on and have calcus on the top of my toes. I know it is weird and it can happen with both new and broken in shoes.

Long weekend is almost over. Back to the real world tomorrow.

Nancy

Hey Guys.

Erica and I had quite a day. we went to our race this morning and meet a bunch of our walking friends. The temp wasn't bad but the humidity was off the charts. But there was a good showing of walkers anyway. The 5K run was first and our walk followed an hour later.

There were about 75 or so walkers with about 20 good race and power walkers, the rest were fitness walkers. The race started up a hill about the size of the over passes at WDW. There was a group of 5 of us who jumped out to a fast start and a good lead, another walker was sprinting up the hill and passed us but by the time we crested the top he was behind.

This was a 2 mile out and back so at the turn you could see how close the next walker was behind you. I roundeed the courner and the closest walker was the sprinter and he was a good 100m behind. Erica looked like the heat was really bothering her.

I held on and finished 3rd male and first in my age group. Erica crested the hill for the finish and was looking much stronger, she even had a sprint at the end. I don't think she warmed up enough, cause once she warmed up she was fine.

Erica placed 3rd in her age group so we both took home hardware.

Then just after the race awards were over we got a call from Tenacious (Jen on Robert's site) that they were going to Mammouth Cave, which is 30 min away from us. So we went home and showered and drove up the Cave to spend a wonderful afternoon with her and her DH, Fred.

So after a race and a long afternoon of cave walking, 500 steps total to come out, we are pretty tired. We had an awesome time and a geat visit with Jen and Fred.

Funny we were just talking about meeting people we met on the internet.

Have a great evening Team.

Dave:hippie:

Dave---Congratulations to you and Erica on your great finish in your race. How nice that you got to meet your internet friends.

Nancy

Thank you pretty princesses.

Erica has a tooth ache so not sure what path today will take. It will start with a 10 am visit to the dentist.

I may just do the yard and errands today, it's ok to rest after a race anyway.

Here is a link to some interesting walking articles.

How's everyone doing today?

Dave:hippie:

Congratulations, Erica and Dave! You guys are amazing! Was it an official racewalk event or freestyle walking? Hope Erica's tooth is feeling better.

I was supposed to walk 40 minutes today, but when I got back home my Garmin had only clocked in 37:50. It was a bit of a stonker anyhow, so I forgave myself the 2 minutes.

Nancy: sent you something in the mail.

Dave and Erica congrats!!!!! More hardware:woohoo: :woohoo:

Jean: WTG on getting your walk in.

Nancy: WTG on your 4.5

I am not sure what i have on tap for tonight, I didn't look but I know I have something...:headache: I didn't get to bed until about 12:30 last night and was up at 5:30 to get DS to his meeting....he didn't know how to get there so he followed me in his car.....ugghhh I am ready to go to bed:cloud9:

I saw that fat march show last night......WOW!!!!!!it sure doesn't seem save to me.

Thanks Jeanne, no it wasn't a judged race, everyone who know how to judge was raceing. I had a car pull in front of me and I had to dodge around it. The road guard was in a trance I guess or maybe he thought walkers aren't as serious about their race as the runners.

I used to be a slave to my watch, now I just start it at the beginning of the walk and stop it at the end. I never look at it otherwise. I used to think the watch was the only guage of whether my effort was worthwhile. Now I just take whatever the day gives me.

Hi Kim, I agree the Fat March is not very safe.

Dave:hippie:

Hi – Haven’t been posting but have been reading. Been super busy at home, at work and trying to fit in my walking is tough. On top of that I have had problems with my neck which is not unusual but annoying so once that is all set I’ll get back to my routine.

On a side note – we have a 8k race on Saturday. It is right near where my husband Mark works so we thought we’d give it a trial run on Sunday to see the how the hills if any were. I had the bright idea that we should do it reverse. What was I thinking? I was not familiar with the streets and of course the one we needed was not marked so we missed it completely and went way out of our way. So instead of doing almost 5 miles we did 6.1 So I guess come race day, the 8k won’t seem so bad after all.

I couldn’t figure out why it was taking me so long to do that route, now I know it was more than a mile longer!

Hello, everyone!

Gosh, a couple of days away from the computer and you guys just go crazy! LOL! Took me 15 minutes to catch up on the posts!

Kim - good job on the 19k! You're moving right along!

Dave and Erica - Congratulations! Sounds like you did well AND had fun (the most important part)!

Jeanne and Nancy - you guys just keep plugging along! Sounds to me like you're both doing great!

Denise - I hope things slow down a little for you so you can get back to "normal".

I finally got under 16 mpm on Monday!
That made me very happy! I did four miles and finished at 15:46 mpm. I hope to be under 15 minutes by the end of the month....Today was water aerobics - such fun!

Keep up the good work, team!

Kathy

Good morning my fellow walkers!!!!!

Kim

Good Morning,

My neck is much better. I have finally received my meds. For some reason the med student who called it in at renewal last month cut the amount in ½ so I ran out sooner and was in terrible pain. The drug store would not refill it and when they finally called it in, I went on my lunch hour to pick them up – they weren’t ready. I’ll tell you, I was not a happy camper on Tuesday. My back was all swollen and stiff. Range of motion was cut in ½ also.

Last night I just couldn’t get motivated and didn’t want to leave the house. So I did 35 min on the ellip. I do love that machine and it worked my arms easier. I figured if I didn’t want to continue I could just get off the machine. It’s not like I was on a walk and far from home.

Saturday for our 8K is going to be 90 with high humidity. Oh ya that will be fun. An as a bonus we get LONG SLEEVE SHIRTS. I’m thinking we won’t be wearing the “official” shirt.

Well back to work for me. Have a great day all.

denise

Good morning guys.

Denise feel better. Erica is still under the weather with that tooth abcess.

Kim I don't know where Bill is, I left bait on Diane's post for women only to draw him out.

I did an easy 2.25 then played in the pool some before stretching in the hot tub.

Basicly an easy recovery day. Race weeks are supposed to be easy.

Denise how did you hurt your back?

Has anyone been injured from walking?

Have a great day everyone.

Dave:hippie:

Good morning all!

Kathy: you go girl! you keep improving every week. I am so in agreement about the water areobics. I try to do it at least twice a week and I really think it helps my body recover from the strain of all the other training. Our Monday and Wednesday classes are held in the deep end. I don't use the flotation aids so it's an awesome workout.

Denise: glad to hear your neck is feeling better

Dave: sending pixie dust to Erica for her tooth.

What is all this talk about mens threads and ladies threads? i think i gotta go check them out!

I just signed up the marathon yesterday. I had a guaranteed spot with Marathon Tours & Travel, but could not officially register until now. Guess there's no turning back at this point.

I think Nancy's getting a little down with her training, so we all need to cheer her up. We have the TofT in about 8 weeks which should be a blast and then after that, only 8 more weeks of hard training because we taper the last 2. We can do it, we can do it! (Especially with all the support we're gonna get wearing those WISH shirts)

*Kim*Thanks for asking about me. I have primarily been lurking the past week or so as I have been doing little training as a result of my back problems flaring up. I have started doing some stationary bike riding and resistance training, as well as a very slow, short walk yesterday. The back is calming down so I am trying to gradually increase my activity so as not to completely mess it up. And PLEASE, keep a life preserver nearby today, just in case. :sail: Keep a look out for iceburgs too.

*Dave* You tried to bait me in a women's only thread? Dude, wrong locale for this guy. With a wife and 3 DDs, I know to stay clear of anything that's women only. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it.)

Good morning guys.

Denise feel better.

Denise how did you hurt your back?

Dave:hippie:

Many years ago I was involved in a car accident. I was rear ended 2x by this girl in a Honda Acord, I was in a Nissan maxima. I was on a hill going down but at a stop when she hit me and pushed me forward and then hit me again! I had my seatbelt on but she really smacked me and then to do it 2 times! Over the years I have had a terrible time with arthritis in my neck because of this. The body will try to protect itself by swelling which in turn will pull the muscles from all over my back ,head and arms so I get this hump in the back of my neck/shoulder area. The pulling gives me a massive headache and pains in my arms, and back.. I am currently taking 2 anti-inflammatory pills 2x a day and muscle relaxants at night before I go to bed. Dr really wants me to work out and the muscle relaxants help me deal with the pain, they do make me loopy but in bed it’s no big deal.

It’s a constant battle with meds, pain and really trying to be “normal” Once a month I to for a massage and she concentrates on my upper body to relax the muscles. I wish I could go 2x a month but it’s all I can afford.

There are days when I think, in just a few minutes she has truly ruined my life and then I look at others in wheelchairs, with all kinds of problems either from birth, accidents, war etc and feel I should shut up and move on. We all have our problems mine are minor compared to others.

Hello, all!

Kim - Steff and I will arrive at WDW the Thursday afternoon before ToT. I can't tell you how I'm looking forward to it! Sometimes it seems like a long way off, but then I think about training and it seems pretty darned close! LOL! Good luck with your 1/2 this weekend!

Denise - Good luck on your walk this weekend! I am sorry to hear of your accident and that you still have troubles with your back and neck. I hope your meds work well and FAST!!

Davie - I hope Erica's tooth is better fast! She's sure had a hard time lately, hasn't she? I wonder why it seems that something so small as a sore tooth can make the whole rest of you feel miserable?

Jeanne - Good for you doing water aerobics in the deep end with no flotation device! I'd probably drown, and our instructor sort of frowns on that.....I find it so relaxing and invigorating at the same time! I go to work right after the class (and showering, of course!) and I feel better the whole day.

Bill - I hope your back is better soon, too, and that you can gradually and safely increase your workouts!

I did my first afternoon walk today, since I'm now back at work. It was hot, hot, hot!!! I haven't looked yet at the info from my Garmin to see my time, but I know it definitely was not my best so far! But, that's okay. I still did my four miles! Yesterday was a rest day and I'll swim laps tomorrow. We are having 2 of our 5 grandsons for the weekend (4 years old and 1 year old), but I still plan to get my long walk in and then run after them the rest of the weekend! LOL!

You all keep up the good work!

Kathy
