Walkers Wanna Compare Notes??

Just back from my 5K 42 mins. not bad. Just wanted to check in as I will be gone for the day and all night.

Nancy......definatley hockey or football.....I really dislike baseball but have to do the good sister thing.....I told them it will be boring, they are big footie (soccer) fans so I told them to be prepared it is nothing as exciting as a English footie game...lol

Gotta hit the showers have a great day all.

Kim

I surprised that she didn't whine again that even though we finished in the same time as we held hands to cross the finish line, I was place ahead of her in the standings. :thumbsup2

Nancy

Go ahead rub it in......I told you they only gave you the higher place because you're OLDER!

Good morning Walkers. I envy you guys who who have vertual walking partners. I have a vertual partner but she runs, so even though she is doing the disney half, she will be a couple of min per mile ahead of Erica and I. I do have Erica to walk my race with though, so life is good.

I was all ready to walk in the gentle rain we were having when I got up this morning. But by the time I was ready to go the rain had stopped and just left the humidity. So I said to heck with it and went LSD.

I walked 7.75 miles in 1:42 even. I was whipped by the time I was finished but more from the heat and humidity than the distance.

You don't have to be a racewalker to use some of the techniques to improve your efficiency as a walker.

Have a great day y'all.

Kathy- actually it was quiet, as their computer had shut down that morning, and they had sent everybody home! But it was up by the time we went for the driver's test. And, he passed! (it was his second time) I go to that one cuz Pueblo's is crazy busy!

Dave- thanks for the link. I wish there was a race walking clinic nearer to me (usually it's in Denver- and I'm already pushing it w/DH to go to WDW for the events I do). I would love to see it in action.

I ordered some new socks & a Nathan bottle carrier from runningwarehouse.com using the Wish discount. I can't wait to get them!

Stacey, the racewalking Guru for the US is Dave Mcgovern and he is based out of Orlando. He has a week long camp he does at the US Olympic training center there. He does clinics all over the country. I'm self taught so I to would love to get some professional training.

Here is the link to his site.

I have been ordering my Mizuno Revolvers from the runningwarehouse. They have the best prices I hav found and I have been wipping out their stock of 9.5s. I only get about 7 or 8 weeks out of a pair. I want to try the new Mizuno Universe for my short race shoe.

Hi Kathy, Steff, Denise, Beth, Judy, Nancy, Jeanne, Wendy, DB, Bill and Kim. Can't wait to meet y'all.

Good morning fellow walking WISHers.

Did 4 miles on TM last night and pump class. It felt really good walking yesterday as I had no aches or pains while doing it. The lady next to me was also a power walker and I was doing a race with her thought she didn't know it. Every time she bumped up her speed I did also. So I got some speed work done without even planning to do it. It helped to pass the time. So did 4 miles in a little over 58 minutes.

Dave--- I have saucony pro grid trigon 5 and I get so confused when I look at buying them on line as there is no model number and not sure if I would be getting the right one. Plus I think I want to try something else, the first pair I got I really liked but not this one as they are slightly different.

/Stacey-- Congratulations on DS passing his drivers test. It is a mixed blessing. You don't have to haul them around everywhere, but then you have to worry about them driving themselves.

Kim-- Good job on your 5K.

Kathy--- Way to go on getting in your 3 miles at a faster pace.

Jeanne--- You know I will be just a year older when we do the Mickey. Be kind to John as he will have also aged by the time he does Donald.

It is to be another cool day we have set records with the high being 62 yesterday. However, by the weekend will be back in the 90's.

Nancy

Nancy I think it's time to do another how to buy shoes post. I think a lot of people are in the dark about it. They usually "update" the shoes every year or so and this can make a dream shoe unusable.

I had a maintance day today. I worked my achillies and calves with an active release technique. My calves for soreness and the achillies to break up the scar tissue that is left over from the tear a couple of years ago.

Walk strong everyone.

Good Wednesday morning all.!!!!!!

We had a great time at the baseball game last night. My nephew in law is at home back in England but a huge blue jays fan, they get the games there. Anywhooo he asked his wife, my niece to catch him a fowl ball since we where sitting on the first base line about 15 rows up.....well guess what.....she didn't catch one but my DH did.....it was so cool so we gave it to her to take home to him.

Tonight is Medievil Times there is 15 of us going....going to be a great time.

Just had to report my TM workout......6K in 60:26 longer then I would have liked but I am slower on the TM then on the roads so all is OK just glad I gotter done!!!!

NancyWhew what a workout.....I am tired just reading that. Oh BTW was it you that asked about the Hard Rock outside the Skydome??? My bad, yes there is a hard rock right inside the dome and it is still there. however Planet Hollywood is not so we went to the Longhorn instead.

WWDave7.75M wow you rock buddy!!!!! How is Erica feeling???

Gotta run, back down to the big city!!!!

Have a awesome day!!!

Kim

Dave: Thanks for the race-walking links. I looked them over briefly and plan to study them in depth later. I must admit that with a few of the photos, I can't really see the difference between the correct and incorrect technique.
Sometimes, when I want to pass other walkers on the indoor track, I do a little race-walk type of thing. It's more of like a hip thrust movement but I think it's similar to a race-walk. I'm glad to hear that your shoes need replacing after 7-8 weeks. I got 2 pairs in January and one of them is completely shot. The soles still have some life to them but the insides are worn out and now give me blisters. Someone said you should get about 500 miles to a decent pair of running shoes, but I don't think I put that much on them because I use other shoes for everyday walking. I got a new pair of Mizunos about a month ago but haven't tried them yet.

Nancy: it was 105 degrees here yesterday.....62 sounds like paradise right now. You are so good.......I got my exercise thinking about working out. I'm still doing my cross training, but walking outdoors in this heat is suicide.

My copy of Marathoning for Mortals arrived yesterday. I ordered a used copy from Amazon.com for some ridiculous price. I was flipping through it and it looks very inspiring. I think it will be good for John to read it also. Some of the snippets I've read are extremely motivating.

I called yesterday to see if I could get an AP rate for POFQ for that day in October when we are waitlisted for BW. The only thing available was CB and the difference was less than $18. I asked about CSR, but that was sold out. We'll only be there one night so we won't get the dining gift card. In the end i decided to just stay put at POFQ......I love those beignets too much!

I am also looking forward to meeting everyone at TofT....we need to fill up a whole elevator load with WISHers....maybe then I'll even buy the photo!

Have a great day,
Jeanne

Kim--- Medieval Times sounds like fun.

Jeanne--- Wow, you still are using the same 2 pairs of shoes. I am into my 3rd pair and need new. I can only get around 300 miles and they start to bother me. I have to get new before I do any sort of LW this weekend. I wouldn't be walking outside in 105 either. The 62 would have been fine if it wasn't pouring down raining. I hope the BWV waitlist comes through for you.

Dave--- A shoe post would be helpful. So is the maintence plan more like stretching exercises?

Nancy

Nancy my maintence day is a combinbation af lots of things I need to do more regularly, like stretching, some deep tissue self massage and some active release therapy. Somethimes I do these things in the hot whirlpool at the health club.

Only XT with a 3 mile Walk Away the Pounds video. I had ordered a set of them so used this one. I forgot what a good total bodywork out you get with those. I wasn't thrilled with having to use weights to do the upper body as my upper body was still sore from all the classes I took earlier in the week.

Nancy

Good morning, everyone!

I had a rest day yesterday, and I think I needed it! I was a little sore Tuesday night and Wednesday morning (abs), but today I feel great! I didn't go further than my 3 miles, but I did do it at a faster pace again - I'm up to 16.46 mpm!! I thought I'd stay at three miles until at least Monday. Tomorrow I get to start driving again (yippee!! :cloud9: ), so I will go over to the walking trail along the river. I am SO looking forward to being able to go where I want to go!

Kim - It sounds like you are having a great time with your family! That's wonderful. I am very impressed that you are still able to work out with all that's going on for you right now! Way to go!

Jeanne - Steff had me buy the Marathoning for Mortals book and I really did enjoy it. I had really not intended ever to do any events, but I got started because Steff wanted to do it and I was being supportive! I still don't want to do a full marathon, but the book was amusing, interesting and informative. I hope you enjoy it - and find some good shoes!

Dave - I checked out the racewalking link. I found it interesting, but a little confusing. The photos look like the knees are locked??? Maybe they're just shown like that to make the point of a very straight leg? And it's very difficult to know how you look when you walk! I am not sure I want to be a race walker! LOL! But, once I get myself back into shape, I think I'm going to try a couple of the techniques, as I would at least like to improve my speed a bit. I hope Erica's cold is better!

Nancy - good luck with your shoe search too! I am lucky enough to have a really great shoe store about an hour away where they fit you and watch you walk, etc. I was sent there by my doctor, who is a runner. It is a pain as the styles change, but so far they have been able to find me shoes every time that are comfortable and work really well for me. One thing I have done a couple of times is buy two identical pairs, if they have them. That defers the agony of buying another pair for a while! :)

All of you out there, keep up the good work! Make a great day!

Nancy: I went to Amazon to check out the Walk Away the Pounds DVD and they have about 20 different versions! One even went up to 4 miles. So confusing! When you walk at home do you use a treadmill or just the floor?

Kathy, yes the knee is straight coming back for legal racewalking technique. It's a technique as well as speed sport. When I went to the Senior Olympics I was not the fastest out there but my technique held up and I was able to finish in the top ten. When you are disqualified it's like you never even came to the race, your name is erased from the records. At the elite level there is a fine line between a walk and a run and especially during the last 100m stretch it's easy loose focus and break into a run. I don't consider myself in the elite catagory (far from it) but I had an opportunity to go compete with them and by staying focused and not breaking technique I did ok. In the 2011 Senior Olympics in Houston I'm going to give it a shot because if I can medal I would be able to go to the World Senior Olympics. There was a delagation from the European Senior Games at this years games to get it set up.

I'm having a real hard time this week staying motivated, this heat day after day is getting old. I'm getting the steps in but the speed is not there at all. I'm at the point now of just getting it done instead of even trying for good times. I need some fall days. I need to go to Disney World. I need some good sense.

I did my 4 mile route this morning, slow 53:25, no spark at all just got it done. The cool pool after was very refreshing, but it's so humid you never really stop sweating. It's forecast to be 103 today.

Walk strong everyone and keep getting the steps in.

Dave:hippie:

Jeanne--- Last week someone had posted a link to a special where you got a dozen of her DVDs for $15. I checked and it is sold out. She has a wide variety of different walking programs. You just do them at home right in front of the TV no treadmill needed. I can send you one if you want to try it. I had used them before and have some VCR tapes also.

Dave--- Gosh, I find it hard to believe that you are having trouble being motivated. The heat must be getting to you.

Kathy--- Good job on getting your 3 miles in and increasing your pace. I'm lucky that my running store I pass on my way home from work, so there should be no reason I don't stop on Friday.

Nancy

Nancy: thanks for the offer, but I probably won't use it. our only DVD player is upstairs in the kids loft and I try to keep out of there as much as possible!

Temps are so much better today....low 90's. I think this evening will be perfect for a walk. According to John Bingham, you require 20 weeks of training for a marathon and he starts with a LW of 5 or 6 miles, which would be a breeze for me. I think i'm going to try following his method to the letter instead of my own plan. It sounds like one of the reasons my feet hurt so much afterwards is because I overtrain all the time. It's structured so that John can follow almost exactly the same plan and just reduce the LW's. Officially, Monday would be the first day of the 20-week program. For a full marathon, he stops training at 20 miles which seems a little short to me. I was hoping to train up to at least 22 miles which for me, would be just about an hour less than the real deal. Any opinions on this from some of the pros?

Well, I am in no way a pro, but I did use MFM's plan for walking the full. I followed it religiously until a stonker of a 20miler, just could not get the steps in with two college kids home for the holidays. I gave up on the TM after getting interrupted several times. So, the longest distance I did pre-marathon was 18 miles. I completed the full and have a beautiful Mickey medal to show for my efforts. I think there were several WISHers last year who did 22 miles though, mostly for the psychological benefit of having put in the distance. I am looking forward to getting officially started next Monday:woohoo: :woohoo:

Hey there team.

Sorry for the late check in today!!!

Got my 7K in this morning in 64 mins. Much better then the TM time yesterday. It was 39 with the humidex today, not sure what that is in F but it was damn hot...:lmao:

Medievil Times, was alot of fun, sad saying good bye to my family, they aren't leaving till Friday but last night was my night to say goodbye.:sad2:

WWDaveHeat is a killer right now but WTG on getting the steps in

Morning everyone. I did 4 miles on the elipical last night in 45 minutes. I wish I could walk that fast. Today will be a rest day.

Jeanne--- Beth gave me the John Bingham walking plan and I think that his long walks will work better for me. I have about 4 different plans I looked at only 1 of them went to 22 miles and that one had you doing 2 20 miles and then the 22. I can't fit all those miles into my schedule. For the middle of the week I am going to stick to doing 3 walks that are either 3 or 4 miles and doing pump, pilates or WAP video for XT. It was the long walks that were the problem. I think until Beth gave me Bingham's plan, I was overwhelmed with what I could do. So this Sat I am just going to do a 4 mile walk and enjoy the last weekend before starting the whole marathon training.

Kim--- Good job on your 7K. Glad that you enjoyed your time with the family.

Yea, its Friday. Hope everyone can enjoy the weekend.
