If you are training to run or run/walk your first half or full marathon then John Bingham's "Marathoning for Mortals" is an excellent reference.

However if you are planning to walk your race then a better resourse is, Dave McGovern's "The Complete Guide to Walking a Marathon".

Dave is a walker and a long time coach, he is even a regional coach for the Team in Training. He trains everybody from budding Olympic hopefulls to beginning walkers. His exercises and advice are geared toward someone who has choosen to be a walker instead of a runner.

John is primarily a runner, so his books are written toward becoming an eventual runner.

Thanks for the tip. I'm almost finished with MfM, but will check out Dave McGovern's book.

You can order it online. It really puts things in perspective better for a walker than the other marathon books.

A basic is that anyone can walk a marathon, everyone can't run a marathon. Most people can take off walking and go 26 miles because most of us have developed walking muscles. You would be sore the next day but you could do it.

Just ordered it. Wahoo!!! More reading material. Hopefully all this reading will improve my walking.:goodvibes

For what it's worth: My achillies injury made running to painfull so I decided to walk to stay in shape. I ordered Dave's book and taught myself to racewalk, using the advice from the book. Within the year I finished 3rd at State competition and then the next year, 8th at the National Senior Olympics. Those races are judged on technique as well as speed. So I guess the information in the book is solid.

Coach Panda, do you think you should be running a coaching clinic for us new racewalkers? Of course, it would have to be before the race season starts.... And in someplace where we could be walking outside and not on the dreadbeast.... I'm thinking maybe a 4-week clinic on a Caribbean island during the nastiness of winter?

Now to convince dh that this "training clinic" is vital to my health.... ;) :rotfl:

I'm in coach Panda and duckie...I am thinking Grand Caymon? Jamaica? We could rent a house .... Of course, the last time I was in Jamaica a bucket of KFC was $100! :lmao: That's about $10 US Greenbacks!

I read Dave McGovern's Racewalk book. It took me a LOOOOOOOOONG time to figure out how to get all my parts doing what they are supposed to, to racewalk, but I broke the 15 mpm barrier this morning. I walked 14:50. Last year at this time I thought that any minute per mile was fantastic if it started with 19...18 was dessert!

Steff--

Sounds like a great idea! I've never been to a Caribbean island, so I'm in for whatever location will lead to the best, uh, training.... :rolleyes1

And way to go on the pace! I'll have to pick up a copy of that book!

Thanks, Panda!

Steff, I don't think we've persuaded Panda to teach our clinic on a Caribbean island...

If you can't convince your hubby to do 2 Disney trips, there isn't a cow tipping chance of him blessing a week at Sandals.

A week? We were going for a month! A month of VERY IMPORTANT TRAINING. :rolleyes1 ;)

(Sorry, I hate this weather here. I'm going stir crazy. And I suspect that dh would not be happy if I quit my job to pursue walking fast as a vocation....)

Well it is easier to get forgiveness than permission, so I'll pack.

Now that's thinking! :)

And it wasn't that dh said no to two Disney trips. It was that we spent 20 days in WDW last year. We don't own DVC! I just was trying to move in (we are negotiating the Beach Club as a retirement home--we retire in 19 years, so we have to get thinking about these things!).

We retire in 10 years. We spent 20 days at Disney last year and 11 already this year. Next is the ToT then the Jan 09 trip. We had some medical expences so we had to cut out the Minnie trip.

Don't you just hate it when life gets in the way of fun?

Sorry about your medical issues. :(

I was hoping to get to ToT because dh has never been to Food and Wine. We'll see what the summer brings!

Duckie, you know it is true that a Carnival cruise is cheaper than a nursing home, with better food! Just get on board and stay there!

I don't know that WDW, is though.....:rotfl2:

Grand Cayman Island has a lovely 7 mile beach..... Beaches are great for tan...uh, I mean walking (yea, that's it...walking) It's a tad more expensive than Jamaica though. We (DH and I) went to Hard Rock Cafe and had two drinks and a burger with fries, each. Only cost us $120 US to leave, of course we DID have souvenir glasses...I think. :confused3

I'm nearly finished with MfM as well and have just ordered this one since I plan on walking not running.

Thanks for the info!

Oh, and I vote for someplace in the Carribean for training camp. DH will be right along with me after the winter we're currently having. :-)

I'm ready for any race/walk training in a warm climate! I'm intriqued by the race/walking because I'm becoming more sure that I'm a walker and not a runner.
I think somewhere on the Mexican coast might be affordable for a training camp. :) Maybe somewhere about 80 miles south of CanCun. :)

Sounds good to me too! I think Scott would also like the idea, and we could add some SCUBA diving to the mix.
