Walk me through a "Day-by-Day" reservation, please.

Hi folks & friends!

I'm making plans to start making our March Break reservations for 2006 tomorrow and thought it might be necessary to do things day-by-day to ensure that I can at least get our 4 days in a 2BR @ SSR, which will hopefully become 5 days in a 2BR @ OKW when the 7-month window opens.

Do I really need to go day-by-day for March Break 2006?

How would I do a day-by-day? I've never done one of these before.

How would I go about switching the SSR ressie to OKW when the 7-month window opens in August? Anyone with an opinion on the potential availability of an OKW 2BR for Mar. 12-16, '06?

Thanks all!

I don't think you will need to do day by day for your spring break next year for a 2BR at SSR but if it will make you more comfortable to do it that way, then you should. Next year Easter is later so those who have an Easter break won't be combined with the usual March break times, so that will take some pressure off.

If you do call day by day, call 11 months from the check out day of your first night. So if your first night is March 12 next year, you could call tomorrow on April 13. Tell MS exactly what you are doing and what the last night of the reservation will be. They will make note of it so that every day when you call back, you won't get a new reservation but it will just be added on to the first day, then the second and so on.

MS is very helpful when doing day by day.

The DIS Boards' very own Caskbill has an awesome DVC planner, and it even includes the dates to call for an 11 month and a 7 month day-by-day reservation. If you want to download it (it's free), go to this link: http://web.nalu.net/~wneth/dvcplanner.htm

Personally, I would do the day-by-day at your home resort at the 11 month window. At the 7 month window, I'd wait to switch it all at once to make sure you don't get some days switched and not others. So I'd call on the 7 month date from the final check out date and see if you can switch the whole thing. If not, I'd waitlist to switch the whole thing. Worst case scenario you'd be at SSR....and that's not a bad worst case! :)

Thanks Granny & HBC -- your suggestions have helped to set my mind at ease. I have Caskbill's awesome planner in a place of honour on my desktop -- it's a wonderful tool for both planning and dreaming, and it's the only way I was able to figure out the dates for day-by-day ressies.

We were at SSR in January and loved every minute of it. There is a twofold reason for the switch to OKW for March 2006 -- check out another DVC resort (part of DW's desire to stay at least once at each WDW DVC resort) and save some points in the doing.

Shouldn't be a problem adding a date to the SSR ressie when converting it to OKW -- right?

Just to add: keep up with the point difference between SSR and OKW if you need to borrow for the SSR reservation (or maybe you have already figured this out if you are adding an extra day?).

Here's the plan:
  • Book Mar. 12-15/06 @ SSR-2BR using 48 OCT 05 pts + 96 OCT 06 pts.
  • switch ressie in August to MAR 12-16/06 @ OKW-2BR using 48 OCT 05 pts. + 102 OCT 06 pts.
You have to love those point differences that make 5 nights at OKW just 6 points more than 4 nights at SSR.

I was a bit, er, unsure the first time I did a day.by.day. But I told the MS CM what I was doing, and she knew exactly what I meant.

Be well!

The best part of a day-by-day ressie is when the call ends the CM says, "Talk to you tomorrow!" I love it.

The process was as smooth and simple as everyone suggested -- it could not have been easier. The CMs knew exactly what I was doing and just walked me through the entire process, guiding me every step of the way.

Doesn't look like there will be a problem with flipping the SSR ressie over to OKW come August -- the CM on Friday and the CM today told me that there was lots of availability at OKW for the time we'll be there.
