walk from RP to US/IOA safe for 12 & 15yr old by themselves?

Was just wondering if I would be using good judgement if I let my 12 & 15 yr old walk by themselves to and from the parks from RP. I didn't know how well lit the pathway was and if the walk would be too long.

Also, we purchased "5 consecutive day" tickets. Does this mean we have to use those tickets every day or can we skip a day to do Seaworld. I'm assuming that the first day we use them they will be activated and then the remaining days will need to be used within that 5 day period.

Any "not to be missed" things to do outside of US/IOA & Seaworld?

I think the pathway is well lit and security goes up and down the path, so I don't think you need to worry. If you are still concerned, have them take the bus or water taxi back.

If it is dark out, personally I probably wouldn't let the kids go alone. It is quite a long walk. If it is light then I probably would. We encountered security at the entrance to the path at Citywalk but nowhere else. The path is quite deserted.

Yes you can skip a day for Seaworld but then you have basically used up one day at Universal. If you start your pass on Monday, then your last day to use it would be Friday.

There is a bus that goes to the new Millenium Mall if you are looking to do some high end shopping. There are also some very good outlet malls on Universal Drive.

You could always do Disney if worse came to worse

So am I, kelly, so I think that makes EVERYWHERE safe for us!

I think a 12 and 15 yo should have no problem with that walk. It's long but pretty out in the open. I preferred the walk to waiting for the water taxi (pre-fall) especially because at the end you're right at IOA's entrance!

Just a paranoid mothers opinion:

I'd have them take the water taxi . The walk is rather long and when we were there, there weren't any other people around - and it would also depend on how trustworthy your 15 year old is (do they "take care" of their younger brother or "torment him relentlessly"???)

I wouldn't let them travel alone at night (after dark) at all.

The walk is rather long and even though it's lit pretty well the only security we saw was at the Citywalk entrance. I think the biggest factor would be if your kids can swim. You're walking all along the water way so if they would happen to fall in make sure they can swim. The water taxis run frequently but it doesn't take much to drown. I'd just have them stick to the water taxi.

You know your kids best, but the area is generally safe. The walk is a winding 10 minute path but it's all on park property and there is a security presence both at the hotel and throughout Citywalk (where the path ends).

While there might be some degree of concern in that the path drops you off at the alcohol-themed Margaritaville, it's actually quite tame.

My two kids are younger, but if I were in your position this would be my rule of thumb: Tell the kids that it's okay to walk to and from the parks and the hotel during the day but only take the boat (or bus) at night.

Besides, I don't care how young those legs are, after a long day at the park the launch ride back to the hotel is a welcome (and scenic) relief.

You got that right Paris! That 10 minute walked seemed like an eternity after a long busy day in the parks!

As has been mentioned, the path is very well lit and is monitored by security. The water way is protected by rails anywhere someone could "Fall" in. There have been no incidents since opening on the path either. I wouldnt feel uncomfortable...but the yachts are always an option if you want to make sure that there is supervision.

My kids (my two older ones--12 and 15) didn't go to the parks by themself, but I would have allowed it if they had of asked. Knowing them they would have taken the water taxi, though. We were returning from the parks one day (daytime) and my 9 and 15 yo kids ran ahead to beat the water taxi that my sister and my 12 yo were on. I didn't worry about them at all and figured that they'd meet us in the room, which they did.
