Hey all and Happy Holidays.

Presently looking to change my walk around lens from the Sigma 18-125 to ??????

I like the Sigma But I feel there's a better lens out there.

If you could have a new walk around lens in your stocking this year...what would it be?

My other lens is the Canon 85 1.8.

Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

you could look at the canon EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM
but at $2500 its a bit pricy

At Photokina, Tamron announced an 18-250mm F/3.5-6.3, but I do not think it is even out yet. If you are interested, you should probably wait on a review or two first, b/c that is covering alot of range and it might not be the best lens.

The Canon 28-135 3.5/5.6 IS is a nice walk around lens. The only drawback would be it might not be wide enough on canons 1.6 bodies.

Canon EF 28-300 f/3.5-5.6L IS USM is not really a walk around lens, it looks like an anti-tank rocket launcher. lol

At least you would be able to find a front row spot for the parades anytime you wanted with that lens. Everyone would go running.

It depends on what is more important to you. Wide angle? Longer Reach? or IS?

If you like the wide angle that the 18mm provides then stay with what you have or go with the 18-200mm version (though it gets harder to focus and not as sharp past 135mm, its also only goes to f/6.3 at the long end which isn't very big) if you want both. If the wide angle doesn't mean as much then the 28-300 gives you the longer reach and IS but you'll have to sell everthing else in your house to get one. You'll also need a travel trailer to tow it around.

The 24-105 is a better lens but you lose both wide angle and reach to sacrafice better optics and get IS.

Or another option is to sell all your Canon stuff and get a Nikon body with the 18-200mm with VR or the 18-135mm which is less expensive (than the 18-200), but still better optically than the Sigma 18-125 (not that that particular Sigma is terrible, its great for an in-expensive walk-around lens).

i like this one also...and you can always back up a couple steps to get the 18mm shot.. well usually, not always, like not on the edge of a cliff or on a busy street but you get the idea :rolleyes1 ;)

Hey, that sounds like a good idea. Maybe I'll do that. Oh, wait, I already did! Mr. UPS man left me a nice little package yesterday (18-200VR). Unfortunately, I haven't had time to open the box yet.

On my old Canon SLR, I had a 35-80mm lens and thought the 35mm was wide enough. But, I have been surprised at how much I have used the 18mm end of my DSLR lens (27mm equivalent). I am not that familiar with Canon lenses, but my preference for walkaround would be something that is 18mm to ?

if i had a full-frame canon or didn't need really wide angle, i'd probably get the 24-105 f/4 L. with a full-frame camera this would be an awesome walkaround lens.

currently on my digital rebel i use a sigma 18-50 f/2.8. this is my walkaround lens and while i wish it has more in the long end, i rarely take it off my camera.

I'm with Jann and We-Love-Disney, my number one lens is the 28-135IS, especially at WDW.

I like Canon's 24-105, it's sharp, has a good range, and has IS. For about 1/4 the price however, there is Canon's 24-85. It is almost as sharp (but not wide open), is smaller, weighs a lot less, but doesn't have IS.

Neither of these is really wide enough with a 1.6x camera but I usually get by.

Thank you all for your suggestions......
some classic responses.......

Still not sure what I want to do.
If I had to pick right now it would be the 28-135IS....
I want to read some reviews however.

Now that Tamron 18-250 sounds intriguing, but I am sure
it lacks????I'll have to do research on that as well.

Now I would love to have the rocket launcher.....

Thx again and Happy New Year...

i actually dislike the 28-300 L with a passion. it's a PJ lens - designed for paparazzi to park on the red carpet or stalk models/celebs as they leave their hotels/houses. it's nowhere near as nice as other 'L' lenses, which are truly walk-around candidates -such as the 24-70 2.8L and 24-105 4.0L. it suffers from barrel distortion and it's awkwardly heavy for such a short lens.

as has been suggested, give the 28-135 a look, or if you have the funds: 24-70 (or 24-105) L are definitely the go.
