Wal-Mart or Hy-Vee??

I haven't started the GroceryGame yet...but I'm wondering if Hy-Vee is still any cheaper on the GG than Wal-Mart. I know there are sometimes sales/deals at Hy-Vee that make their prices lower, however Wal-Mart will price match.

I'm just curious because maybe it's just me...but I get bored shopping at the same store over and over and over...I need to switch it up a little without breaking the budget! I do shop at Aldi's every once in awhile, but I'm still not a huge fan of that store.

I did see a "study" where someone had shopped both Hy-Vee and Walmart and found only a $0.20 difference in the price overall (for the items they purchased which could obviously vary)...but it's been awhile since I've shopped Hy-Vee.

Anyone shop both places and come out about the same?

I can't comment on the grocery game since I don't do that. But, I can tell you after relocating to an area without Hyvee I miss it horribly!! Back 'home' (Nebraska) We had both Hyvee and Walmart. I could see where there would be little difference in savings. On things that I bought often and knew the price they were often the same or within a few cents of each other. Plus, Hyvee (ours, at least) had great selection and a larger variety than Walmart did.

It's kind of sad, now when we do the 8 hour drive back to NE, my daughter gets excited when we get by Kansas City and they have Hy-Vee listed on the road signs. LOL :rotfl:

We personally prefer Hy-Vee. We don't do the grocery game either, but when we have price compared Hy-Vee has come in cheaper every time on the items we purchase. Also the customer service at Hy-Vee by far exceeds the customer service we have been given at Walmart. I would pay more money to shop at Hy-Vee if it meant not having to deal with Walmart employees or lack-there-of employees!

I didn't think WM was on the list of GG stores? I know the point of the GG is to find things at their cheapest and then link them up to coupons and tell you to buy then. Hy-Vee has great ads and usually the ads are less than WMs regular price (since WM never has sales). I'm sure there are a ton of items that the regular price at WM is much cheaper than HY-Vee

if you go to couponmom, she lines up the coupons with HyVee's ad.

It's free.

I do it every week. ;-)

No, the GroceryGame doesn't have Wal-Mart on their list...which is why I was wondering if I play the Grocery Game and use Hy-Vee if it ended up cheaper. I've signed up for couponmom but that site confuses the heck out of me. I've tried over and over to get the coupons for my state, but all I get is a list of deals...when I click on the coupons to print, it just prints the list of coupons i've selected, not the actual coupons! URGH!!! I've given up on that site.

I thought I was the only one who did that! I grew up in N Missouri and when we moved south I missed our Hy-Vee. Thankfully I grew up and moved to Kansas City and now I can shop at Hy-Vee all the time!

My Hy-Vee has a gas station and I can get at least 5 cents a gallon off gas by bringing in my receipt.

I am in Kansas City, and I guess I take the Hy Vee for granted! I do the grocery game, and have double checked HyVee with Walmart, and they usually are cheaper with Teri's List.

Here is my problem with HyVee, I am just not wowed with their list. I do not feel that it is that well rounded, and I usually get only 4 or 5 things a week, and supplement with all the great Target deals on the message board. Are you in an area that has Dillons/Gerbes/Bakers? I really like that list, it more consistantly has staples on it. I have been doing Hy Vee this winter because there is one close. The closest Dillons to me is 12 miles, and with Spring coming, I think I will change to Dillons, especially now that I see I can get HyVee for free with couponmom!

Another problem I have with HyVee is their ad is usually two weeks long, so I hve already used the coupons from the first week, so there is no need to go there the second week. I still have to pay for both weeks. Still yet another problem is the cost of HyVee's meat! Of course it is better than Walmarts.

Thanks, I managed to talk myself into changing to Dillons! That is my thoughts on HyVee!

BTW I have been grocery gaming since last July and even with my HyVee issues I can count on one hand how many times I have been to the Walmart 1/2 a mile away! Love that!!! So Hy Vee is better than Walmart, but Dillons beats them both!

WM kicks HVs behind big time in my city. HV is pricing themselves to be almost like an "executive" store. There is no friendliness or customer service, only an air of arrogance by the management. Pricing example: 20 oz loaf Honey Wheat bread, Hy-Vee label is $1.79. WM equivilant is .99 everyday. Gallon of HV skim milk is $2.65. At WM, get regional big brand name for $2.39. These are just a couple of examples. I'm glad to hear that there are still HVs out there that must be adhering to the tried and true system of friendliness and low prices. True profitability comes from repeat customers and volume of business, and not just a gross percentage profit on every item. That's the HV I remember working at years ago but alas, it is only a memory now.
