I just had to share this story.
In February, we booked two savannah view studios in Kidani Village for the first week of October. One for DW, DS and me and the other for DW's parents. Due to a co-worker's accident, my wife's schedule was changed last week such that her allotted vacation time was moved up two weeks. The in-laws could not change their vacation time so are skipping this trip and will catch the next one.
So on Monday afternoon, I called member services to cancel our two studios and see what was available for a one week stay beginning the week of September 18. There were no studios, and we booked the last available 1BR standard view at Kidani for the first 5 nights of our trip that were available and decided to do a split stay at Vero beach for the last three nights. I waitlisted for a savannah view 1BR for the 5 nights at Kidani.
Tuesday morning, while checking my DVC member account online, it showed that our waitlist had come through! I called MS to see if my eyes were deceiving me, but it was true - we got our waitlist in less than 24 hours!
Here is where it gets interesting. My parents called me Wednesday morning. They recently bought 240 points at SSR (Sept. use year) and have the 240 "free" 2009 Use year points to use. They had booked a stay in February to use those points but now were cancelling because they have an opportunity for a great two week trip off-site. They can't bank the 2009 points again and didn't want to deal with the hassle of renting/transferring the points, so they wanted to know if we wanted to use their points for our trip next month since we paid for their last two Disney trips with us.
So, we called member services. The only way to book the points using my parents' points was to cancel our reservations and re-book under their account. But, the savannah view 1BR was unavailable - two nights in the middle were missing. I thought to myself "in the last 24 hours, how many people could have waitlisted for these 5 days in this specific room category?" So, we cancelled the reservations under my account, and re-booked the 1BR standard view plus the three nights at Vero under my parent's account. Before we all got off the phone, the CM said "Look at that, your waitlist just matched - let me give you the new reservation number!"
