Waitlist and separate reservation later

We have left over points for 2013 that are still bankable, and we have all of our 2014 points. We are planning a stay in late summer 2014 post cruise that we know we need points for, and I can make the reservation now. However, I'd love to waitlist a stay in Nov or Dec. (yes, I know it's not likely) for a quick trip.

I'm trying to figure out the best way to do this without moving up my points expiration.

Do I book the waitlist now with the 2013 points unbanked and then book the summer trip? Then wait to bank the points if the waitlist doesn't come through?

Or should I bank them all now, make the waitlist and the summer reservation?

How many points to you have in both UY's and how many points do you need for each reservation?

One thing is that if they are points for the resort you are making the summer reservation at and the waitlist didn't come thru you could bank the 2013 points and then ask MS to substitute them for the 2014 points so you could bank those and wouldn't be stuck with left over banked 2013 points. But it all depends on what you have and what you need for the reservations.

I have about 140 points left for 2013 and the Nov-Dec reservation would take anywhere from 55-108 points depending on which one came through. The reservation for the summer is a little over 200 points and I have 300 for 2014.

So should I:

1) leave the points unbanked and make the waitlist and reservation?
2) make the waitlist, bank the remaining points, and make the summer reservation?
or
3)Bank all the points, make the waitlist, and make the summer reservation?

Assuming your points can be still be banked after Dec if you don't get that trip I'd wait to bank and set up the 2 waitlists as well as keep checking online for available rooms. And then make the summer reservation with the 2014 points. That leaves you with all your 2013 points to be very flexible on what you book and then when you bank you can call MS and ask them to reallocate your banked points to the summer reservation.

IMO, I'd just bank them all and set up the waitlist to borrow the 2014 points if it comes through. This way, if it does not, you won't have to worry about having to get MS to rearrange points.

Thank you both for your input. I think I just have a hard time with borrowing when I know I have other points sitting there to be used (even though they are going to be used later). I know, it's the odd planner in me and that I always like to have as many points as possible that are available as long as possible. I think somewhere in the back of my mind they are going to multiply or something

That's me too. You never know when you might get a chance to take an extra trip! And I figure that you also never know when you might have to rearrange a planned trip. In this case if you get your Nov/Dec trip and borrowed for it but had something affect the summer trip you could have a lot more expiring points to deal with instead of almost all bankable ones. I figure you might a well plan for the worst and take advantage of the UY's to the best of your ability.

Thanks Kathy. Yes, that's exactly what I am afraid of - a ton of expiring points. Hopefully nothing will affect the summer trip since DMIL is taking us on a short cruise before our DVC stay. Maybe I'll just not waitlist and suffer through not seeing the Christmas lights and decorations this year. A few years ago when we went for Halloween b/c DH wanted to go to MNSSHP, I got extremely lucky as they lit the castle our last night. What to do, what to do....
