Waiting until the end of the year to buy

I got DH on board to buy (most likely at BLT). He wants to wait until the end of the year to buy because we'll have more than half the cost saved up front (we'll finance the rest and pay it off by the end of 2012). Plus I'm due with our first child in October (so our next trip won't be until September/October 2012) and I know these next 6 months or so are going to be crazy and DH wants time to be able to do all his DVC research and not rush.

I'm not that worried about probably losing a year on the contract. I know the price per point at BLT just went up last month (will that happen again in the next 9 months?) But are we going to be kicking ourselves at the end of the year when we go to buy because buying in the next couple months would have been a MUCH better deal especially in regard to incentives, overall cost, etc ??

In 7-8 months I would say your resale options will be significantly better. As to price direct, hard to say. It jumped very quickly from $120 to $140 per point. However, as close as it is (supposedly) to sell out I can't see them raising the cost again. Though, with incentives if you're purchasing enough points, that cost per point can come down quite a bit.

Resales on BLT are $86-99/point. I don't think that will go up much in 7-8 months.

There are definite advantages to saving your money and paying cash for most of your DVC contract. However, there is a good probability that BLT will be sold out before the end of the year. There might still be points available for direct purchase, but once a resort is sold out the incentives seem to dry up.

The DVC will make an announcement in advance if they are closing out BLT so you'll get plenty of warning and then you can decide if you want to by BLT, by direct or buy resale. And it's best to be fully aware of all of the ins and outs of the DVC before you purchase and by waiting you'll know what you want.

I think you are very smart in waiting on this decision. Don't let the excitement of BLT selling out make you buy too soon, there will always be points available for purchase. Who knows you might decide that resale is the way to go and save yourselves a bundle of money.

I also think that it is smart to wait until you are sure that DVC is right for you.

As far as price, well, that is a different story. If you know for sure that you are buying direct, then you always risk the chance the prices will be more and incentives not as good if you wait. However, sometimes the exact opposite happens.

Not to throw a monkey wrench in to things, but if you buy through Disney, you are allowed to put part of the cost of your purchase on a Disney Visa and get 6 months, 0% interest. Since you know you will have about 1/2 the price by the time the 6 months is up, it work for you. Or, just knowing this might help when you do go to buy at years end.

The drawback is that you will own right away and owe 2011 MF's from time of purchase whereas waiting means MF's won't start until later in the year.

This is how we did a few of our add ons and it worked out great.

Good luck!
