I've never heard of a person dying on an airplane because someone ate some peanuts or peanut butter. If it was that much of an issue I'd think it would happen pretty regularly.

That's because you cannot die from Inhalation or contact. You don't hear of it because it doesn't happen. It's another red herring in this argument like the mythical person who can only eat peanut butter for strict medical reasons. It's just hyperbole.

That is exactly what we dealt with when my son was in kindergarten. I think I sent in carrot sticks every time, along with most other parents. Trying to find finger food that was allergy-safe for kids that little was nerve-wracking.

And then the notes came along that urged some "creative thinking" on the snack front so some variety could be offered. Wolfgang Puck would have waved the white flag.

DD is still very good friends with a girl who was one of the biggest issues regarding food in our school back when the kids were in elementary. She was the reason the first "nut free" signs went up on some of the classrooms -- well, actually her mother was technically the reason. Her "allergy" claims caused endless amounts of drama about lunchtime, class parties, field trips and even the traditional gingerbread house building. The little girl let the cat out of the bag that she wasn't allergic at all, there was a lot of controversy and the school had to try and make accommodations on mom's insistence. They're in high school now and the girl won't put up with her mother's allergy stories anymore, but she's not allowed to participate in a tremendous amount of activities because mom always has an issue with something or someone or some policy that prevents it. So sad, the girl is brilliant and lovely and it limits her social opportunities and has made her determined to attend school a plane ride from home to prevent her mom from visiting. I'm holding my breath for the poor kid because I realize finances will probably kill that possibility.

Because now if I have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for my kid I'm forced (without any consideration to me) to make arrangements. I'd be one of the put out people and would probably eat it anyway.

I'm sorry I hate this new attitude that everyone around has to make accommodations for some one else.
If my ding dang kid is that allergic than I make it a point to get my kid safely where they need to go.

They should have all pulled out p& J sandwiches.

I can't speak for your school and community.
But in my community? People would be highly offended by a generalizing statement like that. They do care, and they would do their best to adjust to the need.

I proposed the same idea a few pages back. Interestingly the folks who think it's no big deal for an entire plane to happily accommodate their needs are quiet about the consideration and decency in that idea.

I know all of the above.

Neither is it an option that the world revolve without common food allergies; they exist in this world, and those affected by those allergies need to learn how to live with them without imposing on the majority who are not affected by them.

What would the charge be? Attempted manslaughter by pb & j? That would be equal to the case brought by the autistic child's family because she would only eat food that was steaming hot. They didn't book seats in first class but expected to be accommodated with food from first class. Just poor planning on the part of the parents involved.

Do I think that basic human caring says avoid the peanut product if the request is made, yes. Do I think that demands are getting out of hand, yes.

I was thinking interference with a flight crew. Federal courts have ruled that the laws/regulations for interference with a flight crew apply to someone who willfully disobeys a direct order from the flight crew. That only carries up to a 10 year prison sentence and/or a $25,000 fine. That's both a law and a regulation (there is a difference).

An attorney could probably come up with a good cause to sue, especially if a clear warning was given by the flight crew.

What with the number of ambulance chasers out there, I'm sure the countersuit would be very interesting. Imagine all of the possible cases from LAX alone.

I actually brought up only eating PB. Since you read that, you must have read that it was my autistic daughter and she in very real form only ate pb sandwiches (no jam) for a solid 2 months.

No more mythical than a deathly allergy to peanuts that causes an airplane full of people to comply with a request.... Oh wait...

Maybe it's only mythical because of we were to get on the same plane I'd have a valid reason for telling you I can't put your kid above my own? Because obviously that would just never happen! It's nice that you expect people to take your kids needs seriously, but mock mine. But naturally, I'm the jerk for thinking it's over the top to ask a plane full of people to accommodate someone, yes? M'kay.

And while it's not something that happened on her first flight last year (because we made the decision not to inflict other people with our issues *gasp*) it easily could have. Heck, it could next year for all I know.

It's sometime difficult keeping track of the needs and preferences of your loved ones living inside your own home. I can see where perhaps someone would make a mistake if they have to remember the needs of the 31 students in their child's 5th grade class (letter or no letter).

It's sometime difficult keeping track of the needs and preferences of your loved ones living inside your own home. I can see where perhaps someone would make a mistake if they have to remember the needs of the 31 students in their child's 5th grade class (letter or no letter).

Seriously. What a horrible statement to make. Not everything is malicious. And believe me, I get it. I grew up with a gluten allergy in a time when NOBODY had EVER heard of a gluten allergy.

Airlines certainly have time to do that, it could be a computer program that when someone clicks a box on their reservation that they need a peanut free flight it then knows to issue an email, call or text to the other passengers. If they can contact me about a delay they can contact me about this. Anyone not captured via this method would then find out at the gate

Haha. Just put a box and that's it. You have no idea the work involved in changing that program. It would have to map to a database with thousands of allergies listed. From there you will have to identify the adverse reaction from these allergies.

The airline is not going to notify you that someone has an allergy. They will announce it at the gate a few times and maybe after everyone boards. No one told me a cat was going to be on my flight and I am severely allergic to cats.
