My DD4 hadn't gone poops almost all week. I'm a working mom, and didn't really realize it till Thursday night when she said something to me about it. So I gave it till Friday, and when she showed us that she was in pain from all this, I had DH go get an enema for her. It worked - got out so much I couldn't believe it.

Fast forward to today, its almost 5pm, and now she can't seem to pee. She has peed durring the day, I think, but its not like I'm in the bathroom with them every time they go, so really, I don't know. I'm freeking out about this - what could it be?!? I think the reason she wouldn't poo for so long was because her little hiney was red, and it hurt, so she kept it in, kept it in, kept it in till she was all bound up. I've put desitin on her, and she says its better. But she gets the feeling to go, gets on the potty, and nothing comes out, not even pee.

So now I'm waiting on the Drs call back, not knowing what to do or what the Dr will say. Ooh, she also says she feels like shes going to throw up at times... could that be from her pushing??

I wouldn't be able to help with any advice - just hope she is feeling better soon!

Dehydrated?

I'm still waiting for the call back... I've never had to call the Drs after hours, so I don't know how long this will take. She seems OK right now, but I made her drink her entire water bottle (about 12oz) and she still hasn't gone.... I just wish they would call me back and tell me something.

Can you take her to a Walgreen's take-care clinic? My family and I have always received great care from them.

I thought about that too, because I guess that can happen from the enema. Thats why I gave her the water bottle to drink... just waiting now....

Dehydration can cause constipation. I don't think the enema would cause it. Does she normally drink alot of fluids?

Walgreens takecare clinic? I've never heard of that, I don't think we have them around here.

How long should it take for a Dr. to call back??? Its been almost an hour now!!!

She drinks enough for her, but shes not a big drinker or eater ever. Just not a real hungry kid I guess. But as far as I can tell, nothing changed for her this past week to make her bound up. Though a couple of her snacks were sent back home from school, thats not totally unusual for her. DH is just leaving work, so I'm going to have him bring home some juice for her. Is cranberry best, or apple??

Ok, Dr finally called back. She said that giving her the enema was good, and says that with the way shes acting now, it seems like there is still more in there, and that we should get her something called PediaLax. DH is at the store getting it now. Its 5:30pm now, and they go to bed around 7:30. She said that it takes about 2 hours to work, so I think we will have to wait till tomorrow morning to give it to her. She also said that we can give it to her for up to 7 days if needed, but I really doubt that will be needed - and truthfully, if shes still having this problem in 7 days, I'll just have her at the Drs office.

First
We went thru DD with constipation issues for YEARS!!!! It actually got to the point that DD stopped eating and drinking altogether and was dehydrated, she ended up spending the night in the hospital, b/c she stopped eating she lost 5lbs. We called the Dr. the day she stopped eating and was told "o its viral there's nothing we could do for that." and then the next day it was still the same and we got the same thing with "well you could take her to the hospital" I was fuming b/c they did not want to see her clearly. I did take her and she was "moderately dehydrated" we didn't think she was constipated b/c she did go, but she didn't empty herself out fully.
If it continues I would ask your ped about miralax. DD has been on it for about 8 months and we are trying to ween her off it now with our GIs consent. It really works. GL hope she is feeling better.

While I can certainly appreciate their bedtime of 7:30. This would be something I would give her the pedialax tonight, and let her stay up later. I just wouldn't be waiting 12 more hours - when clearly she is not feeling great.

She is acting 110% better now, though she is still complaining that her hiney hurts a bit. However, I know my little DD, and she can not stay up that late. We told both of them last night that they could stay up as late as they wanted because we were watching movies together. Not even half way through the movie they were both out, and it wasn't even 7:30 yet! They have always been early to bed early to rise. So its not a case of me being strick about the bed time, its just that I know she won't be able to stay up.

Yes, if she hasn't been drinking enough fluids, that probably contributed to her constipation (as opposed to the enema causing dehydration). Make sure she drinks adequate fluids daily.

And again, yes, in addition to getting things moving "from below", it helps to get things moving "from above" as well - hence the laxative. It could take a couple of days of aggressive intervention to get her fully cleaned out. I would start tonight as well. (Chances are, after the enema, she may go again anyway, but the longer it stays in there, the harder it's going to get, the more things will back up, and the more uncomfortable she's going to be.) You need to keep things moving.

The bigger issue is going to be keeping her going regularly, especially if she's prone to constipation. It's important to see that she has a BM daily, or at least every other day. Whichever it is, the consistency should not be hard, which will lead to discomfort and avoiding going. She should understand that it's important to "go" when she feels the urge, otherwise the urge goes away. (This is a challenge for kids, especially girls - and women!). You also need to take a close look at her diet to make sure she's eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables and foods high in fiber. A good quality daily yogurt helps keep the GI tract healthy as well.

She said that it takes about 2 hours to work, so I think we will have to wait till tomorrow morning to give it to her.
It often takes at least two hours to work, it could be a lot longer. If you start tomorrow, and she needs another dose, you're going into tomorrow night also. The stool that came out with the enema was only the beginning. There's a lot more all along the tract if she hasn't gone in a week but has been eating regularly.

I agree with the two previous posters. Forget about the bedtime, go ahead and give her the Pedialax. If she falls asleep, that's fine. Getting her hydrated and things working are more important.

My daughter, who's 20 now, had constipation issues as early as when she was a couple of weeks old.

Be forewarned. Pediaxlax can sometimes work TOO well. My DD3 has constipation issues. She now takes Miralax daily, but we started the journey with her taking Pedialax after the ped told us she was extremely constipated. Just two strips. Major blow out. It was a real mess. So keep her home and close to the bathroom.

Does your DD have a daily vitamin? My sister had terrible toilet troubles at that age - she cannot have vitamins with iron in them, even the normal amount that comes in Flinstones vitamins. Just a thought!

This is going to sound weird, but when my DS was young, he had constipation issues. His ped was sort of old school, but he suggested a teaspoon of mineral oil a couple times of week. It helped things "slide along".

My DD also had constipation problems when she was little. Her doctor also recommended a teaspoon of mineral oil. By itself, it tastes terrible. I kept in the fridge. I'd poor it into a large spoon and then poured chocolate syrup into the middle of it. When she swallowed it, she would taste the chocolate instead of the oil.

Good luck, OP.

I gave her the Pedialax at 6:45 this morning. Its 8:20 and so far nothing. She had a bit of a rough night, got up a few times, and actually did poop a little. We have no plans on leaving the house today, so hopefully we won't have any bad issues! lol
