Waiting in line, but not going on the ride

To add on to this, for Space Mountain when are you able to get off before you get too close to loading? I know there's noway to "cross over" the ride vehicle like in Disneyland.

Alas, CMs at TOT and HM do get too much into their characters sometimes...

I was just thinking about the exit at HM! But at Disneyland...
My daughter had the same reaction as yours after the stretching room. We were allowed to exit at the loading portion of the ride but we had to be escorted down several long hallways and staircases by a (very nice!) CM to get out.

Weird that you were escorted! My son was 2 or 3 and was having none of it after the “why are these adults screaming omg something bad is happening my parents obviously know nothing” room. We got to go out that long long exit out all by ourselves. LASIK ruined my vision in the dark so I was almost feeling my way while carrying my freaked-out kidlet, and frankly going on the ride would have been better. Wish we’d gotten escorted!

As I recall, there is/are a regular doorway(s) on the wall in the boarding area.

I don’t remember where, specifically, the exit is there, but it’s the only chicken exit I’ve ever used. I apparently ate something that didn’t agree with me and as we got closer to boarding, it became quite clear that riding would not be a prudent choice. I told the CM at loading that I did not wish to ride and she showed me out. So you can definitely ditch at the last second there if you need to.

I have to add though, I would pay to see Disney grab you, force you down into the ride, strap you in and hit the "all clear" button! Like besides being all kinds of illegal, it would be a very amusing video!

Took the chicken exit at Space Mountain multiple times last December. You get all the way to the vehicles, where the CM asks how many in your party. You indicate you are getting the heck out of there and you go to the right where there's a hallway/ramp that loops back around and you end up going right past the unloading area. You can wait for your party there and see the photos. Then you all exit into the gift shop.

I wonder if we went out a different way? Our walk was completely lit but very much felt in the backstage area of the ride.

I take the chicken exits all the time, and wait in line with my family. The CM's won't even bat an eye.

The only exit that might be rough (for some) is that at ToT, you take a "real" elevator down to the exit - If this is a concern, he may want to skip the queue. All other rides have a bench, etc.. to wait where the riders get out. You may also have to walk down boring hallways that are unthemed to get to the rider exit area.

I much prefer waiting in line with my group and meeting them after, than waiting the whole time alone.

Thanks! Hubby and I are thinking about having kids in the very near future and I always wanted to see how many rides I would be able to go on pregnant and what rides I would need to use the chicken exits for. Though it would suck not going on my favorite rides (especially because I'm a thrill junkie) it would be cool to see the chicken exits and if any of them are themed or anything. Or to even see possibly some Back Stage areas.

I wait with my family and duck out of riding all the time. I am so sorry to hear a cm forced a child on a doom buggy, but it does make me feel better about forcing my daughter into one. She has almost forgiven me...

Probably not. Did it come out towards the back left side of the ride area (when looking at it with the river behind you), where the FP machines have been? I'm just VERY sensitive to low light.

 The one time I used a chicken exit was ToT when I was 12, and yeah. You have to get in a real elevator, and after spending the whole queue freaking myself out about the ride, getting into any elevator was nerve-wracking. Didn't help that the CMs stayed beautifully in-character throughout the whole process.
