Wait, weren't you just at Disney World? An August '14 Pre-Trip Report *updated 8/24*

Wow, those gardens are impressive! Looks like an amazing place to visit, despite the roller coasters beckoning in the background.

I love the photo of Peter looking into the fish pond and also the one with both kids below the arch of the rose garden. Cool!

Watch out for the drunk butterflies! :lmao:

The Gardens look beautiful and remind me that we have NOT been to the Chicago Botanical Gardens in years; must try to rectify that this summer after hubby is done with baseball season.

Your kids are simply adorable (and nice to see a picture of your wife too!).

Peter is showing off his belly I am assuming because it's a guy thing...showing off those abs. :)

Wow, those gardens look great! Izzy would love running around there, I'd bet. Good choice of free activity! :thumbsup2

Also interesting to see all those roller coasters. I have to admit, I don't know anything about Hershey Park, but I didn't expect big coasters for some reason. Guess I was thinking all cute little rides featuring chocolate or something. :rotfl2:

Looking forward to more! (Side note - I love the little mini-TRs where we get to see other non-WDW fun things to do all over the country (and I'm not just saying that since I've done several of them. :rotfl:) I like learning about places I haven't been!)

It looked to be one of, if not the, most popular basket, so I was pleased with that!

YAY!!!!!

I'm not generally a burger person, but the one you described in your previous post sounds pretty yummy. And I love the pic of Peter with the food all over his face.

Those gardens look amazing!!!!! I take random flower pictures all the time, and get giddy when I'm in a setting where I'm surrounded by them. One of my favorite non-Disney trips ever was to Cleveland a couple years ago: Rock and Roll HOF, Indians game, Botanical Gardens! Hello, happiness! :flower3:

I think the world would be a better place if people just handed out chocolate on a daily basis for no reason.

Love the butterfly bench!

The Gardens look really awesome! Beautiful butterfly pictures!

Thanks! I was very much pleasantly surprised by the Gardens and the kids had a great time! I think I am starting to get good at photographing butterflies :rotfl:

They really were Matt - I was very impressed with them - they also had a Japanese Garden area and a bunch of other stuff we didn't even get to!

yeah - tons of drunk butterflies :lmao:

The Gardens were very nice and you could tell they were well maintained too. Thanks - probably tend to focus on the kids, I'll try to include more of Judi as well :goodvibes

Oh yeah - Peter is very much in shape ... I mean, round is a shape, right? ;)

Wow, those gardens look great! Izzy would love running around there, I'd bet. Good choice of free activity! :thumbsup2

They were very kid friendly there and the kids did a lot of running - I am sure Izzy would love it! Definitely a great "free" activity!

Also interesting to see all those roller coasters. I have to admit, I don't know anything about Hershey Park, but I didn't expect big coasters for some reason. Guess I was thinking all cute little rides featuring chocolate or something. :rotfl2:

Yeah, Hershey Park is a really good mix of Kid Rides, chocolate, and big rollercoasters! They have 6 or 7 really big rollercoasters and some other thrill rides - plus they have a whole water park area (including a roller soaker - water roller coaster) that is included with the regular ticket.

They also open up near Christmas and do the whole place up in Christmas lights and have Santa meets and stuff. Not all the rides are open (most of the roller coasters are closed) but it is still fun and tickets are like $20 or something

Looking forward to more! (Side note - I love the little mini-TRs where we get to see other non-WDW fun things to do all over the country (and I'm not just saying that since I've done several of them. :rotfl:) I like learning about places I haven't been!)

Couple more coming - though I might sneak in some actual update related to the upcoming trip as my FP+ window opens this coming Thursday ... I know, crazy thought right? Pre-Trip notes in a Pre-Trip report :rotfl2:

YAY!!!!!

I'm not generally a burger person, but the one you described in your previous post sounds pretty yummy. And I love the pic of Peter with the food all over his face.

Thanks Sue! It was a pretty good burger - I was surprised how juicy it was - and it came with homemade potato chips which was nice too. And of course a pickle being in central PA and all.

You would love those gardens - so many things to take pictures of - seriously, I wasn't even trying and probably could have filled like 3 posts with just the pictures I took at the gardens!

Pre Trip Report: Part 19 - Plane tickets and FastPass + plans

We now interrupt this mini-TR for an update about the actual trip the pre-trip report is for ... crazy, right :rotfl:

Flights

So last night after the kids were in bed Judi and I spent some time looking at different flight options - and we now officially have them booked. Only thing we have changed is what airport we will be leaving out of ... oh, and what date we are returning - you know, minor things.

confused035.gif

During one of our searches where we clicked "include area airports" it included looking at Bradley Airport out of Hartford. We hadn't looked at that before but it really isn't any further for us to drive than if we were to go to LaGuardia or JFK and after some more searching seems like it would work well - and they have reasonably priced long-term-parking saving us the cost of car service or whatever.

Additional searching showed that what time of day we left mattered more to price that exactly what day - that is, it was cheaper to fly out Saturday morning August 30th than the evening of Friday, August 29th (as we originally planned). So we are now staying an extra day! We just used Hilton points for a room near the airport for that last night.

Plus, this means we can stay longer, potentially, at the Magic Kingdom that Friday, which, you know, isn't terrible ;)

So, we are now booked to fly down on Wed, August 20th where we will then drive from the airport down to Boca to visit with Judi's family. We then will drive back up to Orlando the morning of Monday the 25th targeting checking in to the Contemporary around noon. Then check out on Friday the 29th, driving to a Hampton Inn near MCO in the evening for one night and fly out at 7:30am Saturday morning. So one more things done!

FastPass+ Plans

This coming Thursday - June 26th is the date we can set our FastPass+ so we figured we needed to discuss this. The only one we had any plans for was the Anna & Elsa M&G that we were planning to do with Imagineer5 and her daughter Wednesday Morning at around 11am.

Below is what we have come up with for now - largely based on things we want to do/didn't get to our last trip/are new as well as the guide provided in mesaboy2's great thread on the Theme Parks Attractions and Strategies forum.

Absolutely looking for any thoughts/advice!

+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+

1lya_439_udpu1.jpg

note: Driving up from Boca that morning, check-in, etc.

Plan to arrive at Disney Hollywood Studios around 3pm

3:00 - 4:00 ......... Toy Story Mania

4:00 - 5:00 ......... Star Tours

5:10 - ADR at Hollywood Brown Derby as part of Fantasmic! Dinner package

7:00-8:00 ........... Tower of Terror

8:30 - Fantasmic!

We know we will try to fit in Disney Jr as well (seems reserved area for that as part of FP+ doesn't provide good view, so aren't using that for one). May fit in B&TB shows as well and, if not too long, I might go on R&RC single rider line). Wasn't a ton for us to pick from here so figured we would use it to minimize time Judi and I will have to wait with some/all of the kids while the other rides TOT and Star Tours (Olivia will ride Star Tours too and maybe we can get her on TOT)

+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+

2meb_2f4_udpu1.jpg

8:20 - Tusker House ADR

9:15-10:15 ......... Safari

10:15-11:15 ....... Kali River Rapids

~ Walk around to dry off on jungle trails, etc. ~

11:30-12:30 ........ Everest

~ See Lion King, let kids play on Boneyard, etc. ~

This was another park where were weren't a lot of things for us to pick. We knew we wanted to do the Safari and Olivia loved Kali River Rapids so we figured we would book that and then allow some time to drive off after that. We aren't sure if Olivia will be tall enough for Everest (she is at like 43" now - hoping she grows at least another 1/2" and then we can utilize tall shoes). If there is no way she will make the height we might change that one and then Judi and I can use single rider line. We'll see. We also know we want to not stay here too long as this park is always hotter than the rest and August and what not. We also have a relatively early dinner ADR at 'Ohana that evening.

+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+

464p_981_udpu1.jpg

8:30 - Cinderella's Royal Table ADR

9:45-10:45 .......... Mine Train

10:45-11:45 ........ Anna & Elsa

11:45-12:45 ........ Peter Pan

=> Try to get lunch ADR at BOG

~ extra FP: Talking Mickey, Space Mountain ~

=> Parade with Olivia and Peter while Judi takes Emma back to room?

~ extra FP: Jungle Cruise, etc

8:05 - Wishes Dessert Party

~ Evening FP+ for Big Thunder, maybe Mine Train again, other rides we want to ride at night - though current close time is listed at 9pm, so not sure if we will be able to do this

Magic Kingdom is the exact opposite compared to other parks in that there is a ton we would like to FP+ so not sure how to fit it all in. Plus it is the only park we are doing 2 days at so having to keep that in mind as well.

+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+

5iag_66f_udpu1.jpg

11:00-12:00 ........ Spaceship Earth

12:00-1:00 ......... Turtle Talk

1:30-2:30 ........... Soarin'

~ Extra FP: Living with the Land

Break in room

6:35 - Garden Grill ADR

Oh why did they have to move Living with the Land to Tier 1? This is another park with not too much that we want to do that is FP. Only one we really want is Soarin' as we didn't get on that last trip. Oh well. Figure in the evening we will then spend time walking around World Showcase and also, as we don't have breakfast ADR thinking this might be a "sleep in a bit if the kids will let us" day. Probably grab late breakfast/early lunch at Sunshine Seasons.

+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+

6gpa_5af_udpu1.jpg

9:00-10:00 .......... Mine Train

10:00-11:00 ........ Splash Mountain

11:00-12:00 ........ Enchanted Talles with Belle

So this is still kind of our "extra" day so mostly think it will be for hitting things that we didn't get to our first MK day or doing things we want to do again. I have the Mine Train set again since, hey, it's the new cool thing. Also, hadn't done a FP+ for Splash the first day. We haven't done ETwB yet - last trip Olivia didn't want to wait in line so figure I will book that for this day and maybe we will do it maybe not.

+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+

So that is what I am thinking as of today ... very much open to other thoughts though - and obviously what I am able to get will dictate things a bit too. Though, since I have to log on at Midnight the start of the 26th to secure the A&E M&G I might as well book as much as I can so am hopeful I will get a lot of what I want.

TTFN

I'm never against staying an extra day, especially if it works out better for you ;)

Sounds like some solid plans from what I can see, if you get it all like planned seems like it'll be a great trip.

And I feel like they moved Living with the Land up because the usage of FP+ with it was really messing with the line dynamics. At least when we went the FP+ line was spilling out into the open and it messed with the wait times weirdly. It's okay though, I think it'll probably benefit everyone with walking on.

I'm in for the ride! I hope I'm not too late!

You and your family look so adorable! I think I need to finish your first TR though. :lmao:

I'm going to join in as well... :) Your children are SO sweet! Congratulations on Baby #3- We hope to be in that camp sometime soon! I am going to have to play catch up but do you know what baby is? Other than a baby, of course. :)

I love reading about families in Disney! Perfect place to make memories.

yeah, I mean, I guess if I have to stay an extra day and spend more time in Magic Kingdom I'll do it ... the things I suffer through for my family ;)

yeah, that is the key, huh? Actually figuring out this whole FP+ making process thing ... why can't Disney just accept my Excel Spreadsheet?!?!?!

Ah, that makes sense. And I do understand the need for tiering at the parks they do - just don't like when it negatively effects me! :rotfl:

Hi welcome! Thanks for joining - and never to late! Good time to come in as I actually just posted some info related to the actual trip :rotfl:

Hope you enjoy the last TR! Definitely was a bit different than this upcoming trip will be ... all good things, all good things

Yeah! Thanks for joining! And thank you for the Congrats - best of luck to you and your, um, efforts! You know, I never actually confirmed with the doctor that it is in fact a baby that we are having, but figured if that was not the case she would have mentioned something.

We know know that we are having another girl princess: and we actually already have the name picked out of Emma. Just about a month away from the due date and definitely starting to get excited ... especially now that my wife figured out how to fit 3 car seats across the back of my car - that has been the biggest challenge with this pregnancy :rotfl2:

Awwww another girl princess!!! Yay!! Super exciting!!

Lol, thanks for the good luck! We have trouble conceiving so hopefully soon. We are going to Disney again, yay, in February & both our boys traveled to the happiest place on earth in the belly, so can't leave this one out too. :)

You will love the Contemporary.. My sister stayed there when we visited last week and they got club level.. I felt like an important person going all the way up- almost like I was famous or something.. Lol! I hope to be able to stay on the monorail line one day..

Also, did I see you were there in October 2013? What dates were you guys there? We were there 18-23!

Well best of luck! Maybe having an upcoming Disney trip planned is the trick ;)

We were there from the 11th to the 18th - so we left just as you got there

Yay for an extra day! :cool1:

And we're in the same position you guys were about airports. We usually only fly out of LAX, but have never considered surrounding airports like San Francisco, San Jose, etc so that's what i'll be looking for over the next few months.

I'm really surprised that Olivia enjoyed the Rapids, that's awesome!

I think your plans are very well laid out and you haven't packed every minute with something to do. Looks good!

What?! Why would you put actual trip plans on here?! :rotfl2: :lmao:

Okay, so for Hollywood Studios, a couple thoughts:

1.) I know you've built in a pretty good buffer between your expected arrival and your first FP+, so it may not be an issue, but having Toy Story Mania first on a travel day makes me a bit nervous. I'm thinking that, in the event you were running behind schedule, you might not be able to reschedule that one. However, something like a Tower of Terror you maybe could (or maybe could just get a short standby, if needed). Something to keep in mind, I guess.

2.) I would just get one of you a FP+ for Tower of Terror (and one for Olivia) and get the other one a FP+ for Rock 'n' Roller Coaster. You can get a rider swap for each of them and the other can ride anytime that day with it (along with Olivia again on ToT, if she wants to). That way you don't have to deal with the RnRC single rider line, which is the one I have had some bad luck with (i.e. extremely long wait).

For Animal Kingdom, I agree about using Single Rider on Everest if Olivia won't make it. That is generally very quick. If you did that, you could maybe use a FP+ for Lion King.

In the Magic Kingdom, make sure you each get a Rider Swap when going into the FP+ line at the Mine Train. I'm sure you'll want to ride it more than once each, so that will allow you each another go later. In theory, Olivia could ride it 3 times, I suppose, since she could use her own FP+ and go with the Rider Swap person each time too. Fun!

That's a bummer that Living with the Land is an Epcot tier 1. Hopefully you can get an extra FP+ at the kiosk that correlates well with your dinner ADR. For what it's worth, I had a Turtle Talk FP+ on the last day of this past trip (after Lauren and Aria left) and it was completely unnecessary. Maybe that varies, but I waited exactly the same amount of time as the walk-ins. If there's something else on there you want to do that maybe has a line (Character Spot or something, maybe?), it may be worth considering.

If you do the Mine Train rider swapping your first MK day and each ride twice, you could consider switching that FP+ for your second MK day to something else (maybe Space?). The other thing to consider is how many times Olivia wants to do things. If she would just want to do either Splash and Big Thunder once, you could split that and you get one, Judi get the other, and Olivia get whichever one she wants to do twice. Then she can ride with her FP+ and ride with each Rider Swap for both.

Plans look good! Hoping all the stuff I said makes sense...I am not used to having another family member who has FP+ and can ride things. And I guess I'm not even sure if Peter can ride any of these things? I'm used to just having two adults and a baby, so if anything doesn't sound right - sorry! :rotfl:

Good luck getting all your FP+! :goodvibes

I had a whole comment in min about your bigger rides FP selections, and then saw Dugette's comment which was basically what i was going to say - but yes, definitely take advantage of rider swaps and being able to use one (or two) people's FP selection for 1 ride and the 3rd for another ride and then rider swap. You'll be able to ride a lot more that way, but of course that doesn't work for the rides you all want to do together. BUt like Soarin - you could do 1 Soarin and 1 Test Track and rider swap each (SR line for TT can be long).

First off - thank you for all of your input!

What?! Why would you put actual trip plans on here?! :rotfl2: :lmao:

I know right? it's crazy talk! :rotfl2:

Okay, so for Hollywood Studios, a couple thoughts:

However, something like a Tower of Terror you maybe could (or maybe could just get a short standby, if needed). Something to keep in mind, I guess.

That's a really good thought - and no reason I can't switch the first two. Guess I was thinking of starting with a ride we can all do, but wouldn't want to miss it so might put Start Tours (a ride at least Olivia can do) first just to be safe. Also figure leave ToT for the later spot just as it is close to the Fantasmic! stage

Ok, so it is becoming apparent to me that I don't understand how Rider Swap works - we've never used it in the past as we always had at least Judi's mom with us to watch the kids as she didn't ride anything close to a trill ride

I assumed everyone would need a FP+ to use a rider swap but it sounds like what you are saying is that if I got a FP+ for Splash Mountain (just using MK as there are more things there) for myself and Olivia we could ride and get a Rider Swap for Judi and then got Judi a FP+ for Space Mountain she could ride and get a Rider Swap for me ... and we could basically get on two rides each while only using up one FP+ allotment? Do I have that correct?

If so, I have some additional planning to do!

For Animal Kingdom, I agree about using Single Rider on Everest if Olivia won't make it. That is generally very quick. If you did that, you could maybe use a FP+ for Lion King.

yeah, we weren't sure if the FP+ for Lion King was worth it - plus Judi really wants to play that park by ear due to the heat. But we shall see.

Fun!

Ok, so Olivia wouldn't need to use a FP+ for the 2nd ride? "Everyone" in the party can get in with the rider swap even if they rode the first time? Interesting ...

We just were doing Turtle Talk since we know Olivia will love it and want to do it - but the other one I was thinking of was for the Character Spot as we will want to hit that up ... thinking I will switch that - thanks!

If you do the Mine Train rider swapping your first MK day and each ride twice, you could consider switching that FP+ for your second MK day to something else (maybe Space?). The other thing to consider is how many times Olivia wants to do things. Then she can ride with her FP+ and ride with each Rider Swap for both.

yeah, obviously I need to adjust things and definitely will get some of the mountains in there. I do want to try to get on both Mine Train and BTMRR during the day and at night so hopefully I can figure that out

:goodvibes

Thanks! A lot of this is new to me too ... first time doing FP+ at all and first time having to use rider swap ... Looks like I'm gonna need a bigger spread sheet :rotfl:

I had a whole comment in min about your bigger rides FP selections, and then saw Dugette's comment which was basically what i was going to say - but yes, definitely take advantage of rider swaps and being able to use one (or two) people's FP selection for 1 ride and the 3rd for another ride and then rider swap. Thanks Lauren! This is really helping me out and confirming what Dugette said, er, wrote. Not too much we can all do together. Peter is a shorty so I think he will get on Barnstormer but that is about it ... unless we want to put him in like 3" stilettos to get on Mine Train or something :lmao:

Yes, you will definitely need a bigger spreadsheet! :lmao: :teacher:

You are correct about how Rider Swap and FP+ work. I had not used either until 6 months ago, but between that and this recent double-toddler trip, I've used them quite a bit. Zero problems. Whoever has the FP+ goes up to the entrance with baby in tow, asks for Rider Swap, and is given a ticket for the non-riders to use anytime that day. The person(s) with the FP+ then goes in the FP+ line and rides. The ticket for the Rider Swap should look like this:

Notice it says that it admits up to THREE people through the FP line. So, the non-FP+ adult, plus two others can go with just that one ticket. I believe they do this so that the second person does not have to ride alone. We also noticed on this last trip, as you see in the picture, that they were dating the Rider Swaps to the last day of the month. Not sure if that's always the case, as I thought they were only for the same day, but it may give you an even bigger window for riding later (after dark, etc.)

A couple notes on Rider Swap:

*This is available on any ride with FP and a height restriction.

*Soarin' is a bit of a pain, as you will need to bring a too-short-to-ride family member along all the way into the Land pavilion and up to the queue entrance. Fine if you don't mind going in, but you can't bring the stroller inside.

Have fun planning!! :cool1:
