Wait List Question, HELP!

When you go on the wait list do you have to commit the points up front or only if your number comes up and you are able to make the reservation? I'd hate to borrow the points or rent them just to be on a waiting list when the chances are the room will not become available. Can anyone clear this up for me? I would appreciate it! Thanks!
