Well not for me, but for my BIL. Since I was the one to talk him and my sister into DVC, I've been helping them with their understanding of DVC. So 1st thing was to talk them out of using MB and just renting points ut to other family/friends (who we knew wanted to go to WDW soon) That worked, he had 2 takers for at least 1/2 the points at $10/pt. Perfect right, until we found out they wanted to go in 3 weeks...things were tight to get them into BCV and at one point we booked a 1br for 2 days and our friend's aunt booked a cash ressie for 2 days with 2 studios for the remainder of the week. In the meantime we waitlisted for 2 studios...WELL it came thru BUT there's a story to be told and a lesson to be leaned here.

When I called with my BIL the CM at DVC-MS confirmed the WAITLIST 1st, then cancelled the 1br since we are within the 30 day travel window this put the ponts into the Holding account...BAD ANSWER.

I informed the CM that my BIL had the waitlist on hold until tomorrow, and that they should've cancelled the 1BR 1ST, (since we were not at risk to lose the 2 studios), and then let those points go to holding, but immediately re-book the 2 waitlist studios, using the holding account points.

The CM double checked with a surpervisor and realized their error and apologized profusely for ME having to be the one that brought that to their attention, they corrected the problem and everyone is all set to go (wish I was going back now too).

Moral of the story is to KNOW the RULES because the CM's are not ALL-KNOWING and can make a costly mistake not in your favor.

Anyway thought I'd share that with you all.

Thanks for sharing your story! I'm glad to hear everything worked out for your BIL. These boards really do help us get the most from our DVC membership!

ToyStory Fan, I'm glad that everything worked out.

I'm very new to DVC and didn't really understand what happened with cancelling the 1br after confirming the waitlist. Is there another way to explain it for a DVC Dummy? :)

carriep,

basically if you CANCEL a ressie within 30 days your points get put into a holding account. These points become restricted for use in the current use year (travel must be completed in the current use year). When I had made the ressies, the CM knew exactly what my intentions were, and probably knew that by cancelling the 1br the points would go to holding, but be immediately released for use on the now available waitlist.

The CM that helped me on the actual waitlist (2 weeks later) booked the waitlist rooms 1st-taking points from regular inventory, then cancelled the original, forcing those points to holding. When I called back, to question it they seemed puzzled, but since my points were basically a wash nothing should have gone to holding.

If your new booking uses less points than the original, the difference in points goes to holding (within the 30 day window).

The reason this is a big deal is that if you were not planning a trip in the current use year and you couldn't rent the points out...you'd lose them. 44 points is 44 points. That's like 4 nights in a studio at OKW.

Hope that clears it up.
