Wait for rD Host Resorts or book now with WDW?

I'm planning on running the ToT 10 Miler this year. Registration opens in February but the host resorts haven't been announced yet and I have a couple of questions:

1) Are the host resorts usually announced by the time registration opens for a RunDisney event?

2) Is it always advisable to book through runDisney to get the best deal, or can you sometimes get a better deal directly through WDW or an agency like ************?

I'm thinking of staying at one of the resorts within walking distance of Hollywood Studios so I'm not as concerned about staying at a host resort for the transportation.

Thanks for any advice.

Host resorts usually stay the same each year.

I have always just booked with Disney and then applied any discounts that they release to the general public when they come along.

I know for the marathon this year I ended up paying less for my room than I would have otherwise.

I've not booked through runDisney, but I believe when I thought about it back for Goofy 2013 that it looked like booking room only with Disney was ultimately cheaper with the option to snag any discounts released later. I feel like I remember runDisney treating it as a kind of package that ended up tacking on some additional charges.

That being said for rooms, I will say that at least for the DL 1/2 last year and the upcoming Everest Event, runDisney's ticket prices are pretty favorable for at least a couple of days.

As far as staying within walking distance of the Studios, I'm thinking the EPCOT resorts along the boardwalk are the only ones within walking distance. It may be too late to do so, but there are sites where you can rent DVC points to stay at those resorts which makes them much more affordable than going through Disney directly. There are other trade-offs such as having to book further in advance, paying upfront and not having a cancellation policy, but if those things aren't concerns there are good savings to be had.

Good luck with your planning and your training!
