Wait, didn't I just get back?! An August '10 PTR...TRIP REPORT LINK ADDED p. 27

Aw, sigh...the Pepto cake! :lmao: I remember thinking it was the coolest thing back in the day. Now, not so much. Not sure if they were doing the park shoots back then, but can you imagine being a bride and having a MK photo shoot with that monstrosity in the background? :scared1::scared1::scared1: Too funny.

Ooh, I absolutely LOVED the 25th anniversary parade music too! I also have it on my iPod.

Alright, so typically our plan is to visit the Magic Kingdom on our first full day in WDW. That would be Monday, which isn't an EMH day. Either way we'd be there at rope drop so the plan would pretty much be the same.

A couple of things for you guys to think about for visiting the MK. Although we usually like to visit MK the first day, there is something to be said for AM EMH during the summer because you get an extra hour that is outside the peak heat of the day. Maybe you could go to the Studio on Monday to do Toy Story Mania and your other favorites there and then take advantage of AM EMH at MK on Tuesday.

Another possibility would be to try the Animal Kingdom on either Monday or Tuesday afternoon. You might be able to do your favorite attractions there without much waiting (and using single riders at Everest) after the parade ends and the crowd thins out before closing. Remember how uncrowded it was on our arrival day in April after the parade ended? If you are able to do what you want there in the late afternoon and early evening, you could skip doing a rope drop at AK and do a second morning at MK (like Thursday EMH?) because there are so many more things you all like to do at MK. You got to see a lot of the AK in April, and you know that Emma doesn't like spending a lot of time there.

The Castle Cake! I have to admit, I was excited to see it back in the day because it was different and special for that year. Now, I can't imagine what it must have been like for someone who was taking their first or perhaps only trip that year. They must have been so disappointed.

Wow, only 26 days until our trip. Can't wait! How about another trip flashback??? 3 down, 13 to go. Think I'll be able to finish?

Trip #4: 1997

1997 was an important year in Disney history. OK, so technically it was 1996 that was the important year. But because of that milestone, there was a big year-long celebration going on. Yep, that is right, it was Disney World's 25th anniversary celebration!!

This trip brought us back to the Polynesian yet again. I'm telling you, we loved that place and love it to this day. Since I was in 6th grade at the time, I think this was the first trip we took over spring break. Yes, my parents were the type that didn't like to take us out of school, so once I hit middle school...vacations that involved missing school were done.

I remember hearing how they were going to turn the castle into a giant cake and I couldn't wait to see it. At the time I thought it was soooo cool. LOL. I even bought a postcard of it.

So lovely. Note the sarcasm. ;)

I don't really know why, but for some reason I kind of pinpoint this as the trip when I really got "bit" by the Disney bug. I remember walking out of the Magic Kingdom after watching the 25th anniversary parade. We had watched the parade in Frontierland so as we exited it was still coming down Main Street. There was something about the theme song that brought a tear to my eye. It was just so happy and magical. I still love that song and somehow managed to find it for my ipod. :goodvibes

It was so cool being there for a Disney milestone. A few years ago, when Disneyland had its 50th anniversary, I kept thinking how I am so going to go to the 50th anniversary of Disney World. I am declaring it right now. How amazing would that be??? :goodvibes

1997 was a milestone trip for us. It was the first time that we went over Easter break, and was the first of our 4 Easter at Polynesian trips. I remember being worried about how we would handle the crowds. But, it was so easy to get to MK early from the Polynesian that we had no trouble being at the park when it opened and getting a lot done before it got too crowded. I think ’97 may have been the trip where all of the parks had early opening every morning and the whole park would be open, not just the attractions that are usually open for EMH. That helped spread out the crowds.

It’s also fun to think about how different our trips were then. The Animal Kingdom wasn’t open yet, and several of our current favorite attractions weren’t around. Plus, the girls didn’t have the courage to try some of the thrill rides like Tower of Terror until they got a little older. By ’97 they may have been brave enough to try Space Mountain for the first time. I also fondly remember some of the old attractions that have disappeared, like the Skyway buckets, Mr. Toad, the old Journey Into Imagination, Wonders of Life, etc.

Those trips always featured a lot of relaxing time at the resort. It seemed like we almost always spent 1 PM to 4 PM at the Polynesian pools, and sometimes the girls would play in the sand by the lagoon. Those trips were almost like a beach vacation with the theme parks thrown in. Because we were always up early in the morning we didn’t stay out too late, and didn’t see any of the night shows (except for the water pageant on the lagoon) until later trips. We usually had at least one non-park day, and we filled those with things like a character breakfast, Downtown Disney, the Boardwalk, mini golf, etc. We went to Blizzard Beach a couple of times and once (I think it was ’97) we went to the old Discovery Island.

In those pre-Magical Express days we always rented a car, so between that and the monorails we didn’t use the buses that often.

LOL the infamous pink castle cake. I wonder if Disney ever admitted they messed up doing that?

aww..your lucky you got to see the pink castle cake!! I didn't get to see it, we went in 1996 and in 1998 and didn't see it either of those years!

Aww, that stinks! I wonder how long exactly they had it decorated. I always thought it would be interesting to see if halfway done, like half pink/half blue. haha

Oh my, that castle cake is a sight to behold. I think it's cool looking back at it, but can you imagine if that was the only year you got to go .... and the castle was a cake?! :rotfl2:

Can I come with you for the 50th? Should we start a PTR? :lmao:

Ooh, yeah, that might be a bummer. It was fun to see and actually, on our trip after that, I was kind of sad it was regular again.:rolleyes1

Sure, we can plan a big DIS meet for then! What a great time, WDW's 50th anniversary and a giant DIS meet!

I loved that pink castle cake, I was there that year! :cool1: I know a lot of people hated it, but I loved it, I even have a magnet with the castle cake on it, and I think there is also a postcard floating around my house somewhere with it on it! :)

Glad I wasn't the only one who kind of liked it! LOL.

I think the cake Castle is interesting...I was 18 in 1997, but I think I would have still liked it - something different!

I remember the commercials from the 25th Anniversary on TV. I beggggggggggged my Mom to go!!! We had to, it was the 25th Anniversary! All well, at least I know I have a VERY GOOD chance to be there for the 50th!

Exactly, I think that's why I enjoyed seeing it like that. I also liked the decorations they had for the Happiest Celebration on Earth in '06.

I can't even imagine how insanely crowded it will be for the 50th. I have to go. If I don't I might die. OK maybe not die but I'll be really bummed out.

My DH and I were there for the 25th too! I didn't really like the castle. I still have the 25years backpack I bought! I use it all the time it even washes well. I even have the figment I bought in 1985, it looks like the figment from the old ride to, not how they have them today where they are fuzzy. I did have a huge Mini my aunt bought me, a sun hat with my name on it and a pluto bank from 1972. But after my dad died my siblings cleaned house and threw it away :scared1: I was soooooo mad!!

I would love to see that old Figment! How cool. All I got for the 25th was a pin and a keychain. I think I got a t-shirt too but for some reason never wore it. :confused3

OMG that would stink having it as a cake for a wedding picture! Maybe they could take a picture of you and photoshop you into one with the regular castle. :rotfl:

Isn't that song great?! So upbeat and cheerful. I love it.

Yeah, when I saw MK had EMH on Tuesday I thought maybe that would be a good idea and do what you said about going to DHS on our first day then.

The Castle Cake! I have to admit, I was excited to see it back in the day because it was different and special for that year. Now, I can't imagine what it must have been like for someone who was taking their first or perhaps only trip that year. They must have been so disappointed.

It's funny how a couple people said that about people going for their first/only time and seeing that. That would be a bummer.

I miss some of those old rides. :( I still think we need to get back to Disneyland to ride Mr. Toad. haha

It's funny how we never liked the big thrill rides and didn't try them until we were older. Now you see little kids going on them all the time. We were (atleast I was...) wimps. :rolleyes1

I was trying to think too, when was the time we went for 10 days? Was that '99? I feel like that was the trip we waited almost 2 hours for Test Track on our last day.

Happy Wednesday! Already halfway through the week!

As I mentioned in an earlier post, the new VB colors came out last week! And since I had some giftcards burning a hole in my pocket, I ended up making a new purchase. Check out my new hipster and coin purse (may use it to keep my park ticket/room key nice and safe :))!!!

100_6296.jpg

The grand total I paid for those two things out of my pocket (minus my $20 gift card) was $15! :yay: Yay me!

Oh, and we went to the Brewers game on Sunday and guess what I picked up there...

ALL STAR BREWERS MICKEY!!!!
100_6313.jpg

I am so bad, I couldn't resist. He is super cute. :) And taking him out to breathe...
100_6314.jpg

But the best part was we FINALLY got to see the Brewers win a game. They hadn't won a single game we'd gone to this season. :sad2: Pathetic, I know, but that kind of tells you what kind of season they're having...:rolleyes1 haha, oh well.

Did anybody else get one of those Mickeys for their team?? :)

I was trying to think too, when was the time we went for 10 days? Was that '99? I feel like that was the trip we waited almost 2 hours for Test Track on our last day.

That was '99. We left on the Thursday before Good Friday and came back the next Saturday. Part of the reason we went for that long was because the Animal Kingdom was open so we had another park to explore. We also went to Blizzard Beach on that trip. I'm pretty sure that was when we waited to ride Test Track for the first time. That was also the trip where we got the coupons to do the Family Magic Tour for free and got the free dessert with the characters at the Garden Grill in the Land.

Remember when you found that trip summary that I did when we got home? Did you keep that?

Haha, I love seeing you as a 6th grader since you're the age of some of my students. It's funny to think of it that way!

AHHHHH, $15 is the greatest price EVERRR!!!

CUTE BAGS!!!! I think a ton of us went VB shopping over the weekend haha. Since they were new, I'm assuming they weren't on sale but that's still a great deal!

Fifteen dollars? NICE! I'm new to the VB game.... which pattern is that? I absolutely love the combination of brown and that shade of blue. My toe nail polish is currently that shade of blue. :rolleyes1:laughing:

I love that hipster, that's one of the patterns I'm considering getting! I can't decide though, I really like all of the new ones SOOOO much! :confused3 :)

I know, isn't it?!

Thanks! I love them! :goodvibes No, they weren't on sale but let's just say I know someone who works for a retailer and can get a discount. ;)

Uh oh, once you get a VB there is no turning back! LOL. The pattern is called Slate Blooms...the blue is actually kind of a bluish gray, hence the slate in the name. haha I wasn't sure I would like it but it is a really cool pattern!

I love that hipster, that's one of the patterns I'm considering getting! I can't decide though, I really like all of the new ones SOOOO much! :confused3 :)

I hear ya, there are a lot of cute patterns. So hard to choose!

Hi Sarah!! YIKES! I had 6 pages to catch up on!! Your plans look great so far and I LOVE the flashback pics!! I really dig your the 90's windbreakers too...:goodvibes:goodvibes and the pink castle...:scared1:

I really like your new VB purchases, that coin purse is really cute, GREAT for park tickets!!! Your trip is getting so close!! Your Brewers Mickey is awesome!! I have seen the Twins one but haven't gotten it yet as I have only seen it online, I didn't see one at Target Field when we went, maybe later this month when we go!!!:goodvibes

Cute bag!! I love VB stuff. I love carrying the Vera tote in the parks. It's big, but that allows me to cram all my crap in -- umbrella, ponchos, pins, etc... I'm such a pack rat when it comes to traveling.

Love the bobble head. I would've loved to get a Cubs one.

$15 for a Vera Bradley? Awesomeee! :woohoo:

I LOVE your AS Mickey! He's so cute. Hopefully they are still carrying them in stock when I got to a Mets game next month.

LOL, thanks! Yeah, that castle cake certain was a sight to behold!

I thought the coin purse was adorable and I like how it's laminated so it won't get wet (if we happen to get a sudden downpour, haha). I had been checking out the stores at the stadium and jwwi mentioned she saw them there. I think it was a little bit more than online but I guess it would be comparable to what you'd pay online with shipping.

$15! :yay: Gotta love that price! Very cute stuff!!

Thanks!

Me too. Dad told me the other day I could probably open my own satellite VB store. :rolleyes1 I love the tote too but feel better having a bag with a zipper in the parks. I'd be so paranoid I'd lose something.

The Cubs?! :scared1: haha, j/k.

Yep, it was a great deal. :cool1:

Hopefully you can get your Mets Mickey!

Woo, it's the weekend! Can't believe how fast the week went by. Time for some more Disney plans!

EPCOT PLANS

Epcot EMH
Tues. 8/10 PM EMH 9 pm-12 pm
Thurs. 8/12 PM EMH 9 pm-12 pm

Don't know if we'll bother doing EMH at Epcot...unless we go one of those nights for Illuminations and really want to do Soarin or Test Track.

Must-dos:

Claire and Emma will probably start off their morning with a ride on Mission:Space. Since I don’t do MS, I can go pick up fastpasses for Soarin so we can do that later in the morning. And since it’s right next to MS we’ll plan on doing Test Track.

Those are really the only 3 absolutely, can-never-miss attractions for us at Epcot. After doing those three, we’ll do whatever else we feel like. If a line is too long we’ll just skip it. Here is my list of things I want to do:

:wizard: Spaceship Earth…didn’t do this in April

:wizard: Captain EO…I guess this really falls under the must-do section since it will be completely new for us.

:wizard: The Seas with Nemo and Friends…in April Dad and I looked at the aquariums but skipped the ride. I know I won’t be able to convince Emma to look at the fish but hopefully she’ll atleast want to go on the ride! If we need a break from the heat we can always see Turtle Talk too.

:wizard: Living with the Land…always fun to see the greenhouses.

:wizard: Kim Possible World Showcase Adventure…if you’re reading my TR you know how much I enjoy these little missions! I’m really hoping to do the Norway one.

:wizard: Maelstrom

:wizard: Eat at the bakery in France. Mmm, chocolate mousse. :)

:wizard: Maybe see the candy lady in Japan (it is Japan, right?!). She was on that one Samantha Brown show and she seems cool. LOL.

And since I have a Disney Visa I’m hoping to do the character meet and greet again. I love how you can get that free photo! It's also out of the heat too. :) So that and the other Innoventions attractions could be a heat-buster activity.

I'm going to post my next trip flashback in a separate post since I have a very special record of it...popcorn::
