Wahines on Tour - Hawaii and peek at Aulani! LAST DAY IN THE SUNSHINE UPDATE 8/6

Great update Tammie!

I agree that the 40s were a cool era. Very glamorous and romantic and everyone in the movies talked real fast and started every sentence with "Say..."

Touring battleships is so cool, they're huge! The battleship North Carolina is anchored at Wilmington, NC, where we used to live. I got to play baritone-horn on it with our church band on Memorial Day 1999, which was AWESOME! We played a medley of the service-branch songs (Anchors Aweigh, etc.) and some other patriot songs.

Love love love the 40's, music, clothes, all of it.

Okay you are right, maybe not the girdles. Great update!!!!

Great new updates, Tammie!
All those photos are so awesome. So much history there. Thanks for taking the time first take all those photos and then posting them for us!

Photobucket does the same to my computer too. I have started to just save parts of my updates in word, so I don't lose the whole thing.

I think you are in the middle of an update, but I am really enjoying your most recent updates. The pictures are great. The Arizona and Missouri memorials are wonderful. I really hope I get to see them someday. Keep the pictures coming!

I AM in the middle! Thanks, and since you asked, I will!:goodvibes

Say, I forgot all about that, but you're right! :rotfl2:

That must have felt so awesome, playing all those songs onboard a battleship!:cool1:

Love love love the 40's, music, clothes, all of it.

I think the ladies should have gotten together and had a girdle burning long before the bra burning of the 60's. Of course Spanx are almost as bad! :lmao:

Great new updates, Tammie!

Thank you Karin! I was thinking of all of you while I took pics - can't help myself!:wave2:

I have saved some in word too. I was planning to copy and paste the update before I tried to hit submit, which is kind of backwards because what happens if you freeze up? :faint: Live and learn.

Great update. That was nice of you to get the autographed book for your Dad. I am sure he appreaciated it. Getting a dated ornament each year is an awesome tradition. We have been together, since 96' and do the same thing. It is cool to see you have done it for 31 years.

Great update!! I love history too. :goodvibes

I'm in agreement with a lot of you, I love the 40's and early 50's era!!

The dresses, the music, the hair! I so love the way people dressed up to go to everything. :lovestruc

I so would have loved being able to wear a dress and pearls all the time. :rotfl: So glamorous!!

I think the girddle part would have bothered me, but the way you look in one makes you look sooo good. :cool1:

Although, I won't touch one right now.
I have a friend who was supposed to be losing a bunch of weight and she made another friend feel bad by saying she was in a size smaller than she actually was by wearing spanx to pull it off. :sad2:
If I tell you I'm a certain size because I'm losing weight.... it's because I'm actually that size. I don't want anyone to think I'm trying to pull one over on them. :rolleyes2

I hate deceit.

There was a display set up outside with a coffee table book of the bombing and the history that surrounded it.

I can't see or hear the words 'coffee table book' without thinking about Kramer's book on Seinfeld.

The author was doing a book signing, so we stopped by and had him autograph a book to my dad, it was really nice - even though he wasn't in WWII, the author thanked him for his service.

That's nice. :thumbsup2

so we mosied inside and got a T-shirt for Jim and a christmas ornament.

What's it look like? I'm having a hard time imagining a Pearl Harbor ornament.

Native lawn mower?

How'd the lawn look? :rotfl:

I think the 40's were the coolest time in history. The music was fun, LOVED the shoes and the cars~ Okay, well, probably not the girdles and the "women's work" and no a/c but the movies make it look so fun!

I hear ya. I love the music from that era too. My Dsis always says she was born in the wrong era. Although for her, I think it was the Victorian era.

But I wonder how happy the ladies would really feel the first time you were patted on the head and told not to concern yourselves with "men business'.

This place was so retro and fun!

That canteen looks so great. It looks like you could wander around just in there for an hour or so.

Allright - on to the ship! I have about 150 from the MO - I won't bore you with all of them. I just love history.

Post tons. I won't mind. I was so looking forward to visiting her, and, well.... So post away.

Funny thing, I hated history in school. Now I love it. Odd.

TO BE CONTINUED....

Can't wait for more pics. Thanks! :goodvibes

Thank you! When we first got married, people gave us some dated "first Christmas" ones and it gave us the idea. At that time, I said "when we've been married 25 years, our whole tree will be dated!" Well, now it pretty much is and that 25 years went by like a flash!

Great update!! I love history too. :goodvibes

The dress and pearls? Hmmm so pretty, but I think the shoes would kill you - in fact, I know - you should have seen my grandma's feet! How about the white gloves?

So, girdles are deceitful, or spanx? :confused3 Just kidding! :lmao: Some people just have such low self esteem they have to act like that. :(

I can't see or hear the words 'coffee table book' without thinking about Kramer's book on Seinfeld.

That was such a good idea! :rotfl2:

That's nice. :thumbsup2

It's a tiny replica of the white memorial that sits over the AZ

So true - we could never go back, now. I watched Mad Men a few times - drove me nuts! I think that's why women learned to manipulate so well - a way to have some power

That canteen looks so great. It looks like you could wander around just in there for an hour or so.
Lots to see!

Thank you! I'm glad you like them - and you missing it is just another reason for a do-over!

Part 3

When Jim got ready to do his individual shot, a big wave came up and hit him in the butt - cracked him up! :lmao:
omg what a great sport he is!!!

Group Photo! Everyone look at me and smile - except Wayne, Of course - can you see what Jim is thinking? :rotfl2:
well he seems real.. umm FUN

They served Poki (kind of a tuna ceviche in salt), eww I cant even say it without gagging LMAO
Next up - Hula Show!

Umm, no comment on what these moves are about :rolleyes1
I think they're sexy and they know it LOL

TO BE CONTINUED

Part 4

And then it started to rain - just a light shower
just like Hawaii enough to ruin your hair but not your time LOL

Some CMs came out in the audience to choose dance partners for a competition - Michelle got chosen
You can sort of see her shakin it - look for the dress
Wayne had the nerve to make fun of her after he wouldn't participate
aww what a nice guy.. NOT

We ended our evening by lining up to purchase our photos. They were nice enough to offer a military discount - 15% without us even asking for it. I so wanted to scan those in for you, but they are packed - I guess you've probably seen enough anyway! :rotfl2:
never when you move and find them.. I wanna see LOL

Next: THE ONE IN WHICH I LOSE MY TOP

Ellen – 4 +1 +1 = 6
PKonz – 3 +2 for guessing where the shopping will be + 1 +2 = 8
Drea- 3 +1 = 4
Marv – 2 +1 +1 = 4
Glenn-2 +1 +1 = 4
Cynthia-2 +1 +1 +1 = 5
Dan – 2 +1 +1 +1= 5
aww man i was doing so well lol

So with a couple of questions left, we have Pkondz from CANADA in the lead!:cheer2:

I have two more days to report on, and then sadly it will be all over except the memories - and planning another visit to Hawaii!
NICE!!:thumbsup2

First on the agenda was to tour the USS Arizona or as everyone refers to it, Pearl Harbor.
I wanna go back here with the boys.. i went after high school and I think now being married to the military I would embrace it and it would mean so much more than it did back then

We got our tickets - military members and family get in free, so we only paid to rent the optional headsets to listen to the museum tour.
oh we didnt get to do this either so that would be neat

To Be continued....off to a spa appointment:cloud9:
oh rough life you have there LMAO

Look at these people - standing in disbelief
i can only imagine

Oil still comes up constantly from the original tank
amazing that it does

(More to come - the DIS went down for awhile)
good thing it did, i have time to catch up.. i swear I need a day off to catch up on my trip reporters LOL

Sorry to take so long to come back - just had another amazing weekend in Phoenix! Can't wait to live there!:cool1:
any luck on the house hunting ???

After passing through the hallway with windows inside the memorial, we came to this huge wall of names of all those lost
wow

Then we noticed a lady taking apart the fresh flower leis that had been placed at the memorial the day before - she placed the flowers in a basket and offered them to us to throw in the water as a tribute - I was struck by the sight of the flowers floating in the oil
ok I remember that happening when we went and I thought that was so disrespectful that the flowers were there as a memorial and here someone was tearing them apart.. but maybe thats how they do it so that people have be a part of the experience ?

Christmas ornament? We always get a dated ornament each year, usually from a place we have visited - so after 31 Christmases, we have pretty mucn only the dated ones and the ones our kids have made.
we do that too.. and if our cruise has multiple stops we get one from each port.. some day I will have a vacation tree and a kid tree then a regular ornimant tree LOL

I think the 40's were the coolest time in history. The music was fun, LOVED the shoes and the cars~ Okay, well, probably not the girdles and the "women's work" and no a/c but the movies make it look so fun!
Im with ya.. i love all the dancing the best

Even cookie was working!
LMAO he's a little light to be "COOKIE" lol

ok all caught up.. it really does look like you had a good time and packed so much into your trip even when Jim was working.

DREA! I know how it is to be busy and try to keep up with everyone - then I keep subscribing to new trips, as if I had time to read them! :rotfl2:

Funny about Wayne - when we were in Boise TDY with him, he was the one we liked to hang out with the most. He was not a cheater or big partier. He was fun and seemed more positive then. Once we spent time with them together, I really don't like how he treats Michelle.

Yeah, I think being a military wife would make a big difference in how you see the memorial the next time. The leis don't stay fresh, so they take them down out of respect and new ones are placed each day. I think rather than throw them away, they give the visitors a chance to do something physical to honor the fallen.

Hey, you have awesome memories in your tree, too!:thumbsup2

Took Karin’s advice and I’m using Word this time. So where were we…

Looks like these pull the anchor up :cool1:

Dont' ask - I won't tell! :rotfl2:

IMGP3934.jpg

It’s interesting to note that this ship was refurbed after the bombing and put back into commission until 1992 when she was retired. You will see the décor and equipment were very very old and still being used.
This is the Officer’s lounge

IMGP3941.jpg

There is so much beautiful workmanship in the deck – I think the entire top deck was wood. It seems like they said it was oak and then replaced in the 70’s with teak
IMGP3945.jpg

IMGP3948.jpg

Enlisted mess-these chairs were probably put in about the 70’s – I’ve seen the same ones at tons of snack bars on lots of bases…

IMGP3950.jpg

Want fries with that?

Hi Tech equipment! (Truth be told, I miss that old typewriter!)
IMGP3962.jpg

Sleeping quarters – I don’t know how they do it
IMGP3965.jpg

Jim counted the bunks in this rack as Drea would say – I think there

were 64 slots in about a 14 x 8 area.
IMGP3973.jpg

It’s getting late, guess I'll hit MY rack – at the risk of sounding like Ahhnold - I’ll be back….

I LOVE all the photos, Tammie, but I guess I sound like a broken record (CD? :rotfl2: - showing my age here :lmao:) as I always LOVE the photos. I need to show Tom your new installment as he is really into history and this will be so exciting for him to see.
Thanks for posting, Tammie!!!!! :goodvibes

Excellent update. There is so much history on that ship. I feel like she is speaking through the pictures.

Thank you again! I might have had some of those records, too! I hope Tom enjoys it.

Thank you! They really did a good job of "painting the picture" without any tour guides - so fun that they just let us roam around - I was worried that we would get lost - it's a maze down in the bottom decks!:goodvibes

I love the old computer. My dad was on the saratoga and has old photos of the bunks. Looks really similar. I dont think I would have survived long in the old days. I'm too mouthy at times. Lol. But that's the same reason I broke with tradition and didn't do ROTC in college for the Navy or enlist for that matter. It was tradition that someone was in the navy going back to
My great-great grandpa.

Just came across your review. Loving what I have read so far. We head to Hawaii on November 8th for our 10 night trip there. We are doing Pride of American and about 3 1/2 days in Honolulu before/after the cruise.

Took Karin’s advice and I’m using Word this time. So where were we…
Im gonna take that advice and do it too so I can get my report moving .. someday LOL

Looks like these pull the anchor up :cool1:
THATS HUGE.... thats what she said LMAO

He offered Jesse an opportunity to help preserve a piece of history
Did Jesse do it?

Enlisted mess-these chairs were probably put in about the 70’s – I’ve seen the same ones at tons of snack bars on lots of bases…
HA same here.. and at very old McDonalds LOL

Hi Tech equipment! (Truth be told, I miss that old typewriter!)
IMGP3962.jpg

I like that they left a pic of someones gal up o the wall LOL

Sleeping quarters – I don’t know how they do it

1st UP I love that they have a Marine Corps uniform on a Navy ship.. OOHRAH LOL and yup marines call them Racks But on a ship E calls them COFFINS cuz they are so small. I couldnt do it either.. could you imagine all those men in a small area after chow of beans and franks.. EWW no thank you! :scared:

It’s getting late, guess I'll hit MY rack – at the risk of sounding like Ahhnold - I’ll be back….
alright Terminator we will be waiting! :rotfl2:

I dont think I would have survived long in the old days. I'm too mouthy at times. Lol.
OHHHHHHHHH we are going to get along GREAT lol:lmao:

Yeah, I think mouthy is frowned upon. They have ways of helping you overcome that really fast, I've heard! :lmao: Wow, it must have been a big decision to break tradition! Proud of you for knowing what you wanted to do!

Welcome! :cool1:That's so exciting! We were booked to do that same vacation, and then I earned a free cruise to Jamaica instead so we cancelled -- you'll have to let me know how you like it - I am still thinking about that. Have you cruised DCL before?

alright Terminator we will be waiting! :rotfl2:

OHHHHHHHHH we are going to get along GREAT lol:lmao:

Drea, you're so funny! The corps is part of the Navy, or was - right?

Oh, I thought I had a pic of Jesse shining the plate, but it was him taking a pic. :scratchin I think he did, after some coaxing from his mom.

Funny! You live in a house full of guys like I did! I thought about the Franks and Beans when I was in there too! - Well, Jim was walking in front of me! :rotfl:

You and Laura are going to be like Peas and Carrots, I think! You'll have to have your own names - Chips and Salsa?:confused3
