W.I.S.H.-Wide Monday Mixer!

Hmmm....cross training activities...
I added swimming and biking to my training a couple of years back to help prevent overuse injury and to also provide that cross training benefit. Along the way since then I have become hooked on triathlons, so now swimming, biking and running are all among my prime training activities.

More recently, I have started using the Wii Fit for some cross training as well. I also like to count walking the dog as training, but haven't had the time to do that much lately.

For my cross training I do

spinning,
swimming,
Tae Kwon Do,
elliptical,
and Jillian Michaels 30-day shread (tough, but fun).

I try other random things, but the above are what I do most often.

Skiing, Swimming, housework...house repair...laundry...

Oh wait, life gets in the way of fun

Happy Monday!!

Here's Today's Starter Topic:

"Crosstraining I Have Done."

Tell us what activities you've tried or participate in regularly besides running/walking - what have you liked/disliked? Any entertaining XT stories?

I don't do nearly as much as I should. I go to a total body conditioning class once in a while, but I really need to do more of that and throw in some swimming to give me a workout while giving me knees a break. I do go to yoga several times a week, though. That's really helped keep my running-related injuries to a minimum.

Biking, pilates, Tae Bo, lifting weights, and now, Zumba. Do ballroom dance lessons with hubby count? He's sweating at the end! ;)

Cross training I have done:

exercise bike
incline walking
Wii Fit Plus and Biggest Loser Wii
Yoga

I wish I could do yoga every day!

Swimming biking, wii fit, core class and yoga. Yoga does wonders for the body!

My Xtraining is pretty boring...can I answer last weeks topic?

I saw an Alaskan cruise advertised in a running mag. At a few stops on the cruise you would get out and go for an organized race of varying distances. I think the total distance over the course of the cruise equals a marathon. I think with a 1/2 marathone distance through Denali Park. So, I'd like to do that and let DH vege on the ship.

I'd also like to do 1/2 of the Key West 100--so 50 miles. I am thinking about this for the year I turn 50.

BTW elliptical and strength/core training when I am not on the TM or outside walking.

My cross training includes:

Weight lifting
Stationary bike
Wii Fit Active
Walking with my neighbors
Sometimes the elliptical, but I consider that a torture device!

Ah, the dangers of crosstraining - you might get hooked on tri's, apparently! I must admit have been doing less dog walking during the winter as well. I agree, it's a fun XT activity, but it does put more miles on the feet, too!

Biking, pilates, Tae Bo, lifting weights, and now, Zumba. Do ballroom dance lessons with hubby count? He's sweating at the end! ;)

Of course ballroom dance lessons count! You're moving, right? I've heard so much about Zumba - it is next on my list of classes to try, but they only offer it once a week at my YMCA! One of these days, the stars will align and I'll get to Zumba!

Of course - you always have the option to answer any question you like, including one you make up yourself. Your dream races sound great - I have seen that Alaska cruise race ad myself and always think it looks like good times all around.

I had never heard of the Key West 100 - sounds pretty amazing!

Shhh - me too! I'm sure it's because I'm doing something wrong, but I always end up with cramps in my toes!

And now to answer my own question:

I've really gotten more into cross-training the past few months, mostly out of a desperate need to do something other than the treadmill during the winter. I am grateful for the chance to run indoors, but it gets old. And the outdoors are just too risky for me in the winter. Soooo XT has been a good fit. I've got a lot of things that I like:

Spin class
Bodypump class
Bodyflow
resistance cord and balance ball workout DVDs
Biggest Loser Yoga DVD

And I feel like I've just scratched the surface of what is out there. I feel like I should do some more swimming. Everyone always says it would be good for my back.

In my quest to find new crosstraining activities, I decided to try a Cardio Kick class last weekend. It was really full and everyone seemed to know the steps, some of which were....pretty tricky and involved a lot of punching and turning aroud and walking and lunging and jumping. Well, I kept up as well as I could for about 15 minutes, but then they really started the tricky footwork and when everyone turned and started walking toward me, punching, and I was right at the edge of the room, I have to admit, I just went right out the door! Fortunately I'd already gotten my workout in that morning!

I know that I need to add to my cross training. I had been doing really well at trying a variety of different exercises but am not doing as much as I should.

Here are some of the things I have tried:
1. Wii Fit (love the aerobic exercises)
2. Wii Active (I have done more lunges than anyone should ever have to do)
3. Wii Just Dance (just loads of fun)
4. Free Weights
5. Just starting to learn how to use my big exercise ball (I like it so far)
6. Pilates

I would love to swim and bike, but that will have to wait for some warmer weather!

Thanks for asking!
Jen

I'm a race walker so everything I do for fitness is geared toward making me a better race walker. I vary my walking workouts, just as a runner would, by doing fast track work, long days at moderate speed, fartlak style with varied speeds in one workout and tempo walks.

Twice a week I go to the pool and do running sprints laps. The high knee raise of the sprinting works the quads which are not used as much by a walker as a runner. Every few laps I do a set of 50 flys in the water to work my chest and back then a set of dips on the corner of the pool.

Regular stretching and working out my legs with the stick helps to keep me injury free. I don't use weights since I would rather use motion against the resistance of the water in the pool as my resistance training. I believe that is much better for my joints and tendons.

My first post in the mixer. :)

My x-training ideas:
spinning
hiking with the kids
a casual walk in my neighborhood and lots of stretching
weight training (either on my own or in a group class)
step aerobics
abs with a medicine ball

2. Wii Active (I have done more lunges than anyone should ever have to do)
3. Wii Just Dance (just loads of fun)

Jen

:rotfl: I had to laugh. I just got EA Sports Active for the wii and today I did day 2 of the 30 day challenge. I've had enough of the lunges!!! Saturday night, after I had done a bunch of lunges on Friday and ran on Saturday morning, I could barely walk. I made sure to stretch real good after my workout today and hopefully won't be so sore tomorrow.

I'm pretty boring with the XT---stationary bike, swim, weight training. Occasionally I will do a spin class, and I am now doing yoga twice/week right after running. And I have to say....I do like snow shoveling!

As for last week's mixer....I love the sound of Antarctica....the Alaskan cruise/race sounds neat, too! I think it ould be any race in a place that I haven't been to, but would really like to go!

Cross training- well since I focused solely on running from June 1, 2009 until January 9, 2010, I am finally doing some XT.

I do incline walks on my TM (I can tolerate that, but hate running on the TM:confused3)
Wednesday nights I go to a class at the Y, Body Sculpting. A mix of aerobics, pilates, weights and yoga. My friend teaches it, she keeps it interesting each week.
Sundays I do the Y on my own-10 min warmup on the rowing machine, 30 minutes of weights/abs/ball/medicine ball/push ups etc. I try to do some of the boot camp workouts I did before as well. Then I do 30 minutes on the elliptical. Yes I too hate that dreaded machine, but what a burn I get!! I tried the arc trainer but it just didn't seem to give me the same calorie burn as the elliptical.

I don't really focus on XT, but I take a Broadway Jazz class once a week and a tap class once a week, so I guess I get in a little extra exercise. Every now and then I feel motivated and do core exercises. But mostly other than running my exercise comes from hiking across campus with various weighted loads.

Running is my cross training!

I really don't enjoy running, so I only do it while I am prepping for a race. I like tris, so lots of swimming and biking. Yoga helps me get out of bed in the morning. I also inline skate some decent distances when the weather is nice and I play hockey in an adult league September-March.

Ok, so I would just like to say that I got on the elliptical today. It was raining, so my jogging professor told our class to just go find something aerobic in the rec center. I actually found it quite enjoyable. My friend and I had fun on them. Though I did feel major burning afterwards. But then my other friend and I tried out racquetball. Yeah......that was interesting.

Ooh - racquetball! My dad used to play that all the time! My YMCA doesn't have a racquetball court, but a neighboring one does - might have to try that again sometime. Thanks for the reminder! :thumbsup2

This week, they had free demos at the YMCA of their TRX and Kettlebell classes, so of course I signed up to try both of them! I thought the TRX was pretty cool, and the kettlebell is quite a little workout! I also did a session on the pilates reformer today. I may be a little sore here and there tomorrow.
