The first time we stayed at our "home" at VWL was last week. It exceeded our expectations! We are from northern Minnesota, so we were unsure what to expect of a log building/forest theme. If you haven't seen it, I must tell you that all the pictures of it that you've looked at don't do it justice!
The "long walk" I've heard about didn't seem long at all, as there is a beautiful covered walk way between buildings, and it isn't such a large resort.
The rooms (and common areas) are fabulously detailed. It was all nicer than we thought it would be. The only things I wish there were more of (I don't mean to sound negative, because I dearly loved it there) are: more light in the kitchen, more than a trickle of water in that big shower, and more room on the balcony -- I was afraid if I tripped going out, I might sail on over the railing!
The birthday worked out fairly well, with most cast members noticing my birthday button, and I got fee ice cream. We were in the Magic Kingdom that day, which is such an intense experience that I kept forgetting it was my birthday! It's like celebrating two holidays at the same time (hunting Easter eggs while opening Christmas presents?) so I don't think I'll try that again.
One last note: We visited OKW and BWV for the first time also. We were wished "Welcome Home" and loved it. We had to laugh, though, because at the DVC room tour, in spite of all the controversy on the DIS boards about which rooms are better, we noticed that really they are all identical except for color and furnishings. . .
