Vow Renewal/Marriage License Question

My DH and I will be renewing our vows this August at the Poly. The info I received from DFTW says that I need to bring an official copy of my original marriage license. Do they mean my marriage certificate?

When we were married (10 years ago) we filed for a Marriage License before the ceremony. Once the ceremony was performed, the pastor filled out the rest of the license and submitted it to the state. Then we received an official form from the state stating that we were married- the when/where/who performed the ceremony/maiden name etc. This document says it is a Marriage Certificate and is what I used to change my name, etc. It is from the state and has a raised seal. Is this what DFTW considers a marriage license for the vow renewal?

Your best bet would be to contact your officiant and ask him/her what you need to supply them with. What you are describing sounds perfectly fine and legal, but it doesn't hurt to get confirmation straight from the horses mouth.:flower3:

Good question!!!

I would think they are saying license/certificate interchangable. Certifcate has a raised seal and is offical what is used for all the gov't stuff.

I would contact DFTW and ask them, like the PP suggested.

Hopefully, someone who has gone thru a vow renewal can come on here and verify for us. I am intersted in this also.

I wouldn't worry too much about this. We did a vow renewal in November and no one ever asked me for anything.

They likely mean your certificate. In Florida (at least 10 years ago when we got married) you certificate is your license. The officiant signs the license and mails it in to the state. The state then signs it and returns the original license to you. That's likely why they are saying to bring your license.

Wow, I don't even understand why they need that for a symbolic ceremony like a vow renewal. I agree; check with your planner.

Thank you or your replies. :)

Tehamy- That makes a lot of sense and would explain the confusion. In New Jersey, the state keeps the license once it is mailed in and issues you a completely new document.

I think the most interesting thing about this thread is that Disney needs anything for a vow renewal ceremony, which is inherently not an official event. Maybe to avoid having the wedding venues tied up with just "regular" parties, or even worse, over-the-top sweet 16 parties?

Disney didn't ask to see anything for our vow renewal. :thumbsup2

8 years ago when we had our Disney vow renewal it was our officiant who wanted to see the marriage license (I'm assuming it was for his own records), not Disney. I went through all of the trouble to obtain an official copy and then in all the rush I forgot it!!
He asked for it before the ceremony and I realized I could even picture the table it was sitting on. No worries, I faxed him a copy when we returned.

Before he would perform our vow renewal last year, Rev. Jack Day asked for a copy of our original marriage certificate (what we received back from the state). He kept the copy, I'm assuming for his records.
