Vote - Time to tone down Contemporary rooms?

What would you do with the Comtemporary Guest Room styling

  • Keep the styling - I love it and would have it no other way.

  • Complete Re-do - tone it down while creating a more futuristic look

  • I dont care - it has no effect on me whatsoever

Hey all, I will start by saying that the Contemporary is among my favorite Disney resorts, it embodies Disney magic to me. With that being said, I have to admit the the styling of the guest rooms is a total turn-off to me. Shouldnt "contemporary" or "the tommorow that never came" styling be toned down a bit to atleast a bit more neutral tones. Keep the futuristic (or future of the past) furniture and theme but eliminate the "paint splotches" that is the current style. Personally I think its an abomination and it hurts my eyes.

So, the question for you all to vote on:

1) Keep the styling - I love it and would have it no other way.
2) Complete re-do, make the rooms so you dont need aspirin to fall asleep at night
3) really dont care, the current rooms have no effect on me whatsoever.

Until its last soft rehab (in 1995? 1996?), Disney took the name "Contemporary" literally. "Contempoary" means "in the present," so the CR was decorated much like any classy, ultra-modern chain hotel in a big city, like a Marriott or Hilton.

The room decor is rather gauche, and a return to simpler colors and designs would have an aesthetic benefit; but how would resort guests respond if the CR wasn't "fun" enough? Personally, Disney should select one hotel and make it "themeless" for those guests who've had enough of theme overdose; the CR is an ideal choice

Personally I like the rooms. They're very different from the rest of the resorts. There's PLENTY of "toned down, neutral" resorts to choose from and I think the decor fits the "Disney feel" of the Contemporary. And if I'm not mistaken from watching HGTV, I would have to say the colors and furniture look is very much in style right now!!!

I just dont understand what style it is trying to mimic, it certainly isnt contemporary in any sense that I can see.

And if the style is supposed to be heavily themed, why not something a la the Jetsons? Whether its a lot of stainless steel accents or cute little futuristic references you get the idea. The current theme is like Andy Warhol, just really loud and not reallly applicable to the theme of the hotel at all.

Simply said: the room decor keeps me away. I vote re-do.

I like the rooms. You really have to see them in person, photo's do NOT do these rooms justice.

The Contemporary is our resort and we never have even discussed the room decor as a reason to stay there or not. If I really thought about it I would say that it is bright and fun and if it keeps people away great...there will always be a room for us then!

I know that photos can not convey how a room truly "feels". I had this problem at CSR and didn't want a room in the Cabanas because of the photos. It was much better than in the photos. I won't stay at The Contemporary because it just doesn't thrill me compared to the other WDW hotels. This last rendition of decore doesn't help either. I can appreciate that they wanted to add some color and vitality but it didn't work for me. This is all based on photos though as I have not stayed there. I vote for them either doing something retro-future ala the Jetsons or Jules Verne or maybe attempting to do something truly futuristic-which would become dated but hey, they have to redo the rooms every 10 years anyway.

i remember years ago when the decor was done in mostly black and tan for awhile...witness the 'darth vader' bathrooms that are still there to see what i mean...i hated it!

I love the bright, fun colors in the rooms, the only thing i would like to see is a change in the bathroom paper/paint but with the marble countertops i don't know how they'd do that without gutting them. and that's not worth it to me.

i always shrug when people say that the resort feels "less disney" than others...i mean, sit in the concourse with the monorail whooshing by over your head...to me that's about as disney as you can get! LOL

I love the CR for so many reasons, and the decor really doesn't figure in all that much other than I find it bright and cheerful.

I've stayed there dozens of times over the years, through several changes in decor and this one doesn't bother me. change will happen eventually, anyway!
now, ask me how i feel about the Poly lobby without the old blue/green tiles *sob* boy, do I miss that!!!

I'd like to see a full renovation. Maybe high polished woods, classy furnishings, and maybe 2 or 3 main colors, instead of the current rainbow. Basicly, style like the 14th floor rooms prior to renovation!

::yes:: ::yes:: haha so funny... i knew those bathrooms didnt fit in with the rest of the room when i was there but i didnt know why.... now im going to hear Darth Vader's theme song everytime i shower!!

We personally loved the rooms at the Contemporary when we stayed there last year. I voted no-change.

I wasn't sure what to expect before the trip, but absolutely fell in love with this resort once we were there. The theming & bright colors are very fun & feel Disney to me. I would hate to stay in a hotel room at WDW that looks like any other Hilton or Marriott across the country. I like staying in a themed Disney Resort to really make me feel like I'm at WDW & nowhere else.

I think a change to all neutral tones would make it a boring resort - the vivid colors interest young kids more, IMO.

:)

wow, that old picture...see that's what i meant about the previous room design, i look at that and think I could be in any hotel anywhere in the world. Nothing special. When I see the contemporary rooms, i know I'm in WDW! :)

Glad you liked that Mike, and yes, its true...when the Dark Lord of the Sith visits WDW for those SW weekends, he specifies that he has to have one of the CR rooms with "his" decor in it...dum dum dum, duhhh duhhh dummmmm, duhhh duhhh dummmmmm!!! ;)

I would love to see the bathrooms done in the "mickey hands" design like the bottles of shampoo/hand lotion they have.

I liked it way back in the 70's...when most of the hotel was done in oranges and yellows. Though if you did that now it would definitely be Retro and NOT "contemporary!" LOL

honestly at this point, not sure what they should do with it but i'd be so sad if it was something bland. there is plenty of bland at other resorts on property!

Who said anything about bland? You can have tremendous theming (neutral colored) without having the artist's pallette (or kindergarten color pallette) slopped all around every part of the room. How about a futuristic theme? Right now there is NO theme, just a bunch a VERY loud colors .... this of course is in my opinion.

As a kid I used to enter the Comtemp. atrium and just be in awe. Going into those rooms just kills it for me ... enough of my ranting because obviously Im speaking alot here... I cant stay at the Contemp with the rooms the way they are ...

yeah, i loved it the way it was back in the 70's. Poly too.

You can do a lot with neutral or monotone color palettes (i studied interior design for awhile) that is true. but you have to make sure it doesn't go cold and too metallic; maybe that is what they were trying to prevent with the bright colors.

(again, i reference the Dark Lord bathrooms as evidence LOL) I wish they'd do something with those for sure. Creepy.

To me, the biggest decor element at the CR is the monorail passing through the A frame.

Now, you talk about 'ruining' the look of the resort for you...ask me how I feel about the convention center buildings they added! *Groan* talk about not fitting. I miss coming up from under the tunnel thingy and seeing that clean a frame line heading up to the sky with the monorail and the MK in the background...now it looks so cluttered.

but i know that will never change now....at least we can hope they'll eventually redo the rooms to be fun and futuristic without giving some people a headache as it apparently does LOL

See, now THESE rooms are tacky. Very "Golden Girls"-ish, 1987. Too much poof and pastels. That's probably Dorothy and Blanche on the balcony.

I stayed there once years ago and did not like it at all. I didn't care for the decor whatsoever. I did like the restaurants and monorail access, but that was all. I would not stay there again. But some people like that type of decor, it is just not my cup of tea.

ROFL ROFL ROFL !!!!!!

That is so true! first thing I thought when I saw it was gee, that looks like my grandmother's bedroom! LOL

:crazy2:

i love that emoticon! LOL this one below ALMOST looks like Mike Wizowski!

:magnify:

The results of this poll tell me that if half of the people vote "change", then there is something wrong and they should be changed.

Thanks for everyones 2 pennies.
