Vons delivery prices seem high

I was putting together a grocery delivery order for our trip that starts 10/20 :cool1: and it seems like the prices on the Vons online delivery site are quite a bit higher than I'm used to seeing.

I don't know if this is just higher prices in general for Southern California vs. Colorado, or if this online delivery is just expensive.

For comparison, a 6 pack of deli-style bagels (Sara Lee) was over $5.00:scared1: and a loaf of bread was $4.79. I'm used to bagels around $3.50 and bread for less than $3.

I like the convenience of delivery, but I'm also kind of cheap  We'll have a car and I could go to the Target at Harbor and Chapman or even one of the regular grocery stores. We arrive in the late afternoon, and were planning on just getting dinner and chilling at HOJO's that first night.

What do you all think? Pay for the convenience or work in a grocery run?

If you have a car and you're just chillin' the first evening anyway, I would plan a grocery run. :thumbsup2

SoCal is expensive, and Von's is the one of the more expensive of my local grocery store options, but that's still where I choose to shop because I like them a lot. I actually just looked up the prices for our local Von's delivery and it looks like Sara Lee is just the most expensive type of bagel. They are $5.19 for 6, but Thomas bagels (which I prefer) are only $3.00 for 6. I do, however, have a Von's card, which makes it cheaper. I'm not sure if you can get a Von's card online or over the phone, but that will save you a lot. When I lived in Colorado, I know we had Safeway. They are the same company, so I wonder if a Safeway card would get you discounts at Von's? It would be worth asking. I usually save at least $20 each time I shop at Von's with my discount card.

The Von's is less than two miles straight up Harbor from the HoJo's. It will take you 5 minutes to drive there. We are local and that Von's is our regular store. Yes, the Sara Lee is the most expensive brand. We get Thomas as well. We also get generic bread and such, which is much cheaper. You can use a Safeway card at Von's but if you don't have one, tell the checker that you'd like a Von's card and they'll sign you up right there--it's free! And you can save it for your next trip ;).

I just re-read the OP's post and saw that they will have a car. In that case, definitely just go to Von's and as MyYear suggested, you can get a Von's card right there at check-out that will get you the discounts.

I even drew a silly map for my blog! :rotfl:

If you have a car by all means drive there. We were contemplating delivery but then my dearest friend who is in SoCal planned to visit us and is stopping at the store to get some bottled water and a few pieces of fresh fruit for us. If we had a car we would have just driven to the nearest store.

If you think doing a store run would be easier, do so for sure:)

However, if you are wanting grocery delivery and not the hassle of driving Vons is great for that. Make sure you are sorting prices by low-high (for instance their basic bread is $1.09 a loaf, and goes up to $5, depending on the "fanciness" :)

When you go to checkout, it will ask you for your club card. If you don't have one (I just did a mock order for 1 item) it says it will give you club prices on anything that is elligible (just for ordering online). If you do have a safeway/vons card then enter it (to get your fuel rewards, etc). So don't worry about not having a club card!

Hope that helps! I plan on ordering from them on our next trip (GCH will hold groceries so I can have them waiting for us when we get there!).

A Safeway card will get you the same club card bennies at Von's. Hubby was in San Diego a couple years ago on a job and we would just key in our home phone number there and it worked just fine.

You might also consider stopping at a grocery store along the way to Anaheim.

I agree Vons prices are high but still cheaper than buying several single bottles of water from Disney or the vending machine or sandwiches from Disney or a nearby restaurant, which I assume that's what the bread is for. I have shopped there before as I didn't know the area the first time I went to DL. But as MyYear said it's really a close drive to Vons. To me not worth delivering, if you have a car.

Thanks to everyone for all the tips. Whatever I end up doing, your advice will help me save some money. I especially like the idea to sort the delivery prices low to high--I didn't think to do that. When I shop here at home it is so easy to just look at the prices on the shelves and see what's on sale. I also already have a Safeway card, so I'll be sure to use it if I go to Vons or have them deliver.

Thanks again!:grouphug:
