Seems smart. Highlanders depreciate 41% over 5 years. BMW X3 and Volvo XC 60 are both close to 60%.

I had 3 volvos, not one bit of trouble. My mother had 2 BMW's, one was in the shop a lot, the other I just had refurbed and shipped down to her, is approx. 25 years old and still kicking.

I have 2014 BMW X5 and have loved it and don't regret my purchase at all! The only time it has been in the shop is for regular maintenance items like tires, oil changes, etc. It is so nice and comfy and the back seat area is actually comfortable for adults. My other preference for the X5 is that it does NOT have a third row. I rarely would carry more than 5 people and I enjoy having more room to carry "stuff" rather than a small seat that nobody likes sitting in anyway.

I have a Volvo XC40 and love it. I looked at BMW as well. The X3 is more expensive for the same options (the base price is cheaper or the same, but Volvo comes with much more standard), and the interior isn’t nearly as nice. It also felt smaller.

The XC60 is bigger than the XC40, so I’m not sure that XC60 and X3 are really comparable.
