voluntary recall on over 40 OTC children's medications

I just bought Benadryl this morning, thankfully it's not on the list. I posted this on my facebook page, thanks for posting. I'm really glad now that mostly I buy the generic stuff.

Thanks for the info! I have 6 bottles of the recalled stuff! :scared1: I'll call in a bit. THANKS!

I buy mostly generic too so we were good but I did happen to buy brand name zyrtec last week at the grocery store, that is all they had, but it is NOT on the list. I was having a hard time finding zyrtec as it was, DS7 takes it every night, guess I better go get some generic in.

Warning: Benedryl is included in this recall too!

I'm horrified, we keep benedryl on hand for allergic reactions. If it contains inactive ingredients then it's not going to help when absolutely needed. The one listed is dye-free, sugar-free bubblegum flavor (yes, the one I buy and keep several places in the house, cars and diaper bag).

All medications have inactive ingredients. They are things like the flavoring, coloring, preservatives, and filler. That's different than ineffective or impotent ingredients.

(My DD is allergic to one of the oft-found inactive ingredients, so we need to read labels carefully. Found out this morning that she can't use Delsym. Zyrtec is out, too, as is Neosporin. As are Huggies Natural diaper wipes and Desitin Creamy, but I digress.)

from the release:
Some of the products included in the recall may contain a higher concentration of active ingredient than is specified; others may contain inactive ingredients that may not meet internal testing requirements; and others may contain tiny particles

To me the press release sounds like it's saying that some of the medication strengths are too high and others may be too low (ie. inactive). However, it would help a lot of they were more clear about what the actual problems are.

Thanks for posting this! I buy a mix of brands so I'll have to go check. DS just finished a bottle of Zyrtec and I am not thrilled to see that recall. He is having issues as it is and this just reminds me of another reason why I don't like to take meds or give the kids medicine unless really needed. Ugh.

So glad I found this thread on here. I knew I could count on the disboards! I just read about this and we have 4 bottles of motrin (that I have found so far as DD is still asleep & I can't go in her room!) that are being recalled. I had just given her some of it too in the begining of the week as all 4 of her eye teeth are coming in. Guess I will have to call McNeil later today to hopefully send the bottles to them or whatever they are doing. I wonder if Babies R Us is taking any of them back. I am just upset because I chose to pay for their name brand, instead of the generic, and now might have to throw it out because they have quality control issues.

Update: Make that 5! I just found a bottle of Tylenol.

Only our motrin was recalled. Our benedryl was ok. I just trashed it and bought new at wal-mart last night. They were crazy busy over at the kids med and had some one over there to answer questions. Not sure what they were taking back.

I checked our medicine cabinet & we have 3 of the recalled bottles. One that DS had finished Thursday & DH fished out of the trash, Benedryl which I'd been giving him and a bottle of kids' Motrin. I question the Motrin because it's a clear liquid but has cloudy parts in it, kind of like foam above & in the liquid. It's very odd looking and I don't know why I've hung onto it but it doesn't look right.

On the website, it looked like there were going to be refunds for affected bottles.

Thank you so much! My DD has a cold right now and we have been using all those products and all of ours are part of the recall. I am infuriated!

McNeil has a form to fill out on their website to request a refund OR a coupon towards a new purchase. You need to enter the NDIC# and lot #, so you will need the bottles. I had 6 of them.

Funny thing is, I could have driven to McNeil in the time that it took me to enter the info! They are located about 7min. from where I live!
