DS's car is a 1996 Mazda Millenium with a lot of miles and in need of a lot of work. He has an opportunity to buy a Volkswagen Vanagon, 1988 that runs very well, good tires, the interior looks almost new and I think it would be a decent car to fall back on when his decides not to start. I am planning on buying a new car for myself this summer so I will hand him down mine but, I have a lot of miles on mine. Personally, I think $720 for a vehicle that runs well, looks good and has passed inspection is not a bad idea. Any thoughts?

how long will he be using the car?
repairs on volkswagon are expensive, even routine maintence.
we had a 86 jetta. it was good up to 70,000 miles then it was like pouring money down the drain!

also the vanagon it's almost 20 years- parts for it will be hard to find.

if you plan on driving and when it breaks down then junk it
$700 isn't bad. but don't plan on having it for an extended period
of time.

I am thinking that he won't have to use it for more than 6 months and only occasionally, when he can't get his car moving. He is in LOVE with his car. I figure that for $700 its a good back up car and he won't have to worry about being late for work. If we can't sell it, we can donate it.
