All out trip to celebrate our first anniversary

Sunday, 11/11/01

Finally, the day I’d been anticipating for so many months. Our first anniversary, and our arrival at the Contemporary. We woke up early, packed the car and headed toward Walt Disney World. As we were driving, I spotted a sign for Shoney’s, so we took a detour and headed there for breakfast. You have to understand that DH had talked about Shoney’s breakfast buffet incessantly since we started planning the trip, so it was a happy start to his day. We entered the World through the entrance by the Downtown Disney hotels, and navigated our way to the resort. The Contemporary was shrouded by fog, but that couldn’t dampen our spirits as we pulled into the hotel and the staff took our bags. Barely containing my glee, we stepped into the hotel lobby only to be greeted by the White Rabbit, Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee. It seems that Sunday mornings are one of the times that the Contemporary is visited by the new Character Caravan. It was nice to see some characters without huge crowds, but hardly a replacement for early entry, IMHO. Check in was a breeze, and the woman behind the desk was wonderful. She noticed how smiley I was so early in the morning and I blurted out breathlessly “Of course I’m happy – I’m in the most wonderful place in the world with my husband who’s never been here, and it’s our first anniversary!” She helped me make reservations at Hollywood and Vine for the Fantasmic dinner package on Wednesday night, and gave us a card with a number to call to check to see if our room was ready. We then found our way up to the fourth floor, hopped on the monorail and headed for the Magic Kingdom.

First thing DH wanted to do at MK was take a loop on the train, so we happily boarded and took some video of the trip. Next, I bought my 100 years of magic pin, and we headed over to Tomorrowland, where we rode Space Mountain, Buzz, and the TTA – hubby loved this ride, and we got our first glimpse of the magic pin working! We breezed through Fantasyland – a fastpass for Winnie the Pooh (we both enjoyed this) and a trip on Small World for DH’s sake (his sentimental favorite). We looped back and headed for Adventureland where DH had his first Dole Whip. As we sat at a table to enjoy, a woman dressed up like a crazy explorer that had somehow collided with Tammy Faye Baker sat down with us and had us laughing hysterically for the next 20 minutes. We rode the Jungle Cruise, and then headed back to the hotel to check on our room.

Let me tell you, the woman that checked us in sprinkled some pixie dust our way – we were on the 11th floor, dead center, with a king bed overlooking the Magic Kingdom. It was more perfect than we could have possibly dreamed. We headed downstairs to get our mugs at the Food and Fun Center, hit the arcade for a bit, then I headed up to the room to catch a nap while DH stayed and played (he is an arcade addict!). I wasn’t feeling very well – had the makings of a cold coming on – and I refused to let it ruin our night. I didn’t get much of a nap, because shortly after I laid down there was a knock on the door. I had decided to surprise DH with a romance basket and flower arrangement from the WDW florist. Both were beautiful, but I expected a little more than what we got for the price. Lesson learned, but at least hubby was surprised and enjoyed it (at least until he sees the credit card statement!) Almost immediately after DH got back to the room the fireworks began over the MK. What a way to start a trip – we sat out on our balcony with a glass of champagne and enjoyed the show! Eventually we got dressed and headed over to the Grand Floridian for our anniversary dinner at Victoria and Albert’s. What an experience! Practically perfect in every way.

Whew - I still have a week to go! I will post more of this trip report as I complete it. This is my first attempt at writing one, so I apologize if I'm boring you all to tears!

Not boring at all...I am looking forward to someday going alone w/my husband (maybe when our youngest graduates college????). I loved the magic pin, especially in Peter Pan!

it is so wonderful to be at Disney....and then to have all this goodness all over you.......I am so glad that you are having a good time......thanks for posting

Great report. I just love the contemp. Always magical. Look forward to more.

Boring me? LOL...I don't think so. I'm really enjoying reading about your trip. Sounds like you had an amazing room at the Contemporary.
