Viva Italia: Closed Toe Shoes?

Noticed that the packing list includes having closed-toe shoes.

Is this because of the terrain or is there someplace that we'll be visiting where it's mandatory dress code?

Might be the terrain. I wore open-toe sandals the whole time, shouldnt be a problem. Dress code is mainly for visiting inside churches and they are particular about shoulders and knees showing.

We just got back from our third Viva Italia.

While there are mandatory dress codes involving shoes, there is a great deal of walking over uneven pavement, cobblestones, gravel etc.

The tour of the Forum is very uneven and rough.

Closed toes shoes are a safety and comfort suggestion.
