Vista or wait for Windows 7??

My computer was being fixed by Best Buy and they dropped it. Everything is good as they gave us full credit towards a new one. My question is should we buy one now with Vista before Windows 7 comes out the end of this month? We would get a free update to Windows 7 and can update it once the bugs are worked out. Or, wait until 7 comes out and buy then. Best Buy looks at it as a cookie. Vista is the cookie and by buying now the free Windows 7 update is the icing.

What are your thoughts?

I hate installing operating systems... Did it one time and I thought it was a PITB... so I would wait.\

I just bought a laptop with a free Win7 upgrade. Like the OP I figured I'd wait to install Win7 after some some of the bugs are out of it.

You should also ask Best Buy when they will start selling machines with Windows 7, because while it may be released at the end of the month, it may take another month before BB sells it preloaded. However, I am sure they will have it ready to sell by Christmas season!

As for which you should go for? Well when do you need a computer? Can you wait a month or two without a compter? If yes then I would wait for Windows 7(based on some early reviews). If you can't then go with Vista and then get the upgrade later. Vista is not that bad if your doing basic stuff like Word, Excel, email and of course DIS boards! Also upgrading an OS is alot easer than years ago.

Actually, free OS upgrades have been common place just prior to the announced release date when you buy a new system for quite some time. I remember getting a free upgrade from Win 3.11 to Win 98.

The upgrades are paid for by the computer manufacturers so they can close out existing inventory.

I have a laptop that runs on Vista so I can wait without any trouble. It is my desktop that was dropped and believe me, I use it for very, very basic stuff. I am extremely computer illiterate. Best Buy did tell me that they don't know when the preloaded computers will be in. They also told me that it would be easy to upgrade from Vista to the free Windows 7. I asked them if I would be better off having them doing it and they said no.

I have windows 7 and I love love LOVE it! Haven't had a single problem, and I'm happy now that my dh got to test it out for work. At first I wasn't thrilled to have to deal with new stuff on the lap top but I am :cool1: now.

My husband knows someone that is testing Windows 7, too, and he says the same thing....zero problems with it. It just scares me because it seems that there are always bugs in new systems but perhaps not.

Mine actually came home expecting the worst from it, he says there are always bugs in a new system and when he was pleasantly surprised he installed it on the rest of the home computers.

WOW, that says a lot!:thumbsup2 Thanks, guess I am leaning to wait for it to be installed on the new one.

Been running Win7 for over 12 months or so now (Ex MS Employee) and have to say that there's no need to wait for the bugs to be "ironed out". It's the most solid release I've seen from MS.

I have it on all our PC's and Netbooks at home and also running perfectly in bootcamp on my Mac. :)

I thought that was because Windows 7 is the debugged Vista...it's not a new system, but a fix for the disaster that was Vista?

Windows 7 is a new operating system, built on a foundation laid by Windows Vista, just like Windows 2000 was a new operating system, built on a foundation laid by Windows 3.1.

Windows 7 is hardcore stable for a new operating system. My wife has it running on several workstations and once all the drivers were made available, she's not had any concerns with it. The upgrades are super-smooth.

Having said that, I still like the idea, if I have a working Vista workstations or laptop, to stick with it for a while longer, until there are computers coming out that work better with Windows 7 than with Vista.

All our computers at work were recently upgraded to Vista. I'm talking several thousand employees. EVERYONE is having problems with it. So my advice:

Stay away from Vista. Stay faaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr awaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy from Vista.

Don't say you weren't warned.

We all can't wait for Windows 7.

The end.

I guarantee that if you install Windows 7 on *any* PC that's running Vista, you'll be more than happy. I've seen Win7 running on PC's with less than 1gb of RAM and performance is quite okay, whereas I wouldn't recommend Vista to anyone with less than 2gb.

Win7 will give you better performance than on any PC that's running Vista.

Yes, but a computer built for Windows 7 will be better than a computer built for Vista running Windows 7.

Some OEMs already have permission to build Windows 7 computers. Dell has a program, "Buy select systems with Windows Vista and Dell will upgrade you to Windows 7 before your system arrives!"

Take the Vista now and ask BestBuy for free installation of the 7.0 upgrade "at a future date." Since you're the one who's been inconvenienced, they should be willing to handle it for you, for free.

Make sure you update Vista as soon as you get the new computer hooked up, install/update the virus and adware scanners, and make a restore point/recovery disk. That way you start out on the right foot. Then scan and run updates regularly.

Most important: use an external drive for your documents, pictures, etc. That makes the upgrade to a new release infinitely easier. Plus, you can do back ups more easily.

As others have said, Vista's pretty stable right now. I upgraded six computers last week from XP to Vista with no problems. The users are happier because that's what they use at home and that's what their friends in other departments have, lol. They all still want new computers, but that's another budget battle. It's all about status, hahaha!

This is a good point - make sure the new computer meets the requirements for Win7.0. They usually have a sticker on it that says "Win xx Ready" but I'd pay careful attention to the memory requirements. Personally, I max out the memory on every new computer I buy for home or work. It just takes away one excuse for why something runs slowly, lol. (Can you tell I fight with the Helpless Desk regularly?)

I've recently purchased a new desktop (about 3 months ago) and a laptop (last week) and both have 4 gb or RAM and have ran Vista w/o any issues. I heard bad things about it, but my experiences have been positive.

It took awhile to get use to the new features and how it works, but haven't had any issues with either and both can get the upgrade to Win 7 later this month.
