Visiting the UK

Hi everyone. I was hoping some of you might be able to give me some tips and advice.

I am going to be doing a study abroad (I'm a grad student) in the UK this summer. Our trip is only for 2 weeks.

We are coming right around the time of the British Open and we might be able to do something with that (it's a choice to come a couple days early) and then we are going to be staying 2 weeks at Regent's College in London.

I have no idea what to expect or anything so anything anyone can tell me would be most appreciative.

I'd buy a really good guide book on London, I really like the DK Eyewitness guides as they are informative, have lots of maps and photos on every page.

For details on what is going on in London TimeOut is a great website/magazine. The list almost every single thing going on so quite an extensive list!

London is my favourite city, there is just so much to see and do. www.londontown.com is a brilliant website, it has a calendar on there telling you what's going on for the dates you're visiting. It also has a section about free things to do. Many of the wonderful museums are free. Walks by the river and through the beautiful parks are lovely during the summer months. Information about the transport can be found here www.tfl.gov.uk I know there are travel passes for international visitors but it may be better for you to get a visitor Oyster card. You pay a refundable deposit of £2 and then top it up when necessary. It can be used on the tube (subway) buses, DLR and trams and the fare you are charged is much less than the cost of a ticket.

My advice would be bring an umbrella or a waterproof because weather is un-predictable and have fun! Never stayed in London myself, sounds like you'll have chance to soak up alot of the sites. What sort of industry will you be studying in?

Thanks for the replies. We are studying corporate governance and ethics and except for the flying part, I am really excited!

Emily's advice about bringing a waterproof/umbrella is probably pretty valid. I would suggest you bring a variety of clothing as the weather is pretty changeable here.

Hope you have a great time here in the UK. London is a great place to visit, if you get a chance you should try and see a show in London - Blood Brothers is fantastic
