We are going to be visiting Disney World for the first time with our 8 year old son in August. We have never been to Florida before and are unfamiliar with the climate. Any suggestions on how to dress, and how to best pace our day at DW would be appreciated. Thanks a bunch!!!

Hi squeekymouse, welcome to the DIS!

You will discover that it is VERY hot and humid in Florida during the month of August. Often there will be an afternoon shower as well. The great thing about being at WDW is that it's easy to duck into an air-conditioned building quickly if you need to get out of the heat. We just visited Cedar Point last week and I was amazed at how difficult it was to find air-conditioned buildings, especially restrooms! At WDW all the shops, pavillions, inside rides, restaurants, etc are nicely air-conditioned.

When we visit WDW during the summer months we always get up early and head to the parks as soon as possible. If you arrive at opening you can enjoy a couple of hours with a little more comfortable weather and lighter crowds. We then plan a nice sit down lunch somewhere and head back to the hotel for swimming/rest and relaxation. All refreshed we'll head back to the parks in the evening and hope that it has cooled off a little bit so that we can enjoy the evening entertainment.

Be sure to bring plenty of sunscreen and plan on taking it slow. Have a great trip!

Hope you enjoy your trip! We went last year at the end of Sept. and loved it. Make sure to use sunscreen before you go to the parks as well as putting some on later in the day as well. A small battery operated fan that could fit in a backpack or a fanny pack works well. You will need to see how you feel during the first day to see if you want to go back to your room for a swim or to rest. Make sure to drink plenty of water while there. You will love the parks. Your son should be tall enough to ride all the rides.

Where are you staying? We stayed on-site last year and are planning to do the same this year. Make sure to do a character meal also. Our boys will be 7 and 4 when we go and are planning to do at least 2 breakfasts this time. You might want to get involved in pin trading. Both our boys loved this and are looking forward to adding pins to their collections this trip.

Also, make sure to take comfortable shoes. We wore tennis shoes and socks and never had problems with blisters. The most important word when it comes to dress is COMFORTABLE!
