Visa Waiver changing/car hire??

My mum inlaw spotted this article in the paper on Tuesday so I thought I would post it, not sure how much difference it will make, but thought others might want to see it.

"Americas special relationship with Britan is about to come to an end with changes to the visa waiver scheme-the green card you fill in on the plane when you fly to the US.
From October this year,those of us who like to arrive in the US,hire a car and tour around will need to be in possession of a FULL visa to do so.
This must be obtained at great expense and after much form fillling from the US embassy in London.Only those holiday makers who can supply full american address and telephone number for their stay will still be allowed to use the visa waiver scheme.
Many others will find themselves being turned back at immigration when they realise they have forgotten to take the phone number of their holiday hotel with them"

I would imagine that most people who travel on a 'fly-drive' type holiday would have their first nights hotel booked before they go. I certainly would want to have at least one hotel booked before I left the UK.

I think this is probably scaremongering by the paper more than anything. There are a few situations where you just dont give enough information on the waiver form for them to know what you will be doing.

1. 1st night staying in Orlando airport the rest of the stay at another hotel.

2. many villa holidays only allocate the villa on arrival. Having done this I was asked to put the management company details on the waiver form by the immigration official (4 years ago)

3. 2 centre holidays

4. Flydrive of course. I think that its probably likely that they do not allow you to put "flydrive" as the location of your stay anymore and would want you to put the first place you are going to stay at.
