A British family stood in tears at Atlanta Airport as their father was lead away for not having a Visa. The family were on their way to Disneyland Calf.


Now someone tell me its still not worth applying for a Visa when you know you can't travel via the VWP ?

Did you actually read the article Yo ho yo ho?? He was sent home because he was Asian and it was the day of the foiled terrorist plot last week! It says all of the Asian men were taken away!

Couple of points, i did read the article.

The guy was sent home because he didn't have a Visa after being grilled for 4hrs

It's not an offence or breach of the VWP to be Asian.

It doesn't say

It says all of the Asian men were taken away!

And no i'm not a sun reader, i buy and read the Daily Telegraph !! The article was pointed out to me.

The artical quite clearly states that he had a British passport. Therefore he should not need a Visa and should have been able to enter the country under the Visa Waiver Program.

Yes the article does say he was sent home because he did not have a Visa -but why would he? Most other British people entering the USA do not require a Visa so why should he?

No it doesnt say "all the asian men were taken away" but it does say that several other Asian men were refused entry by the same officials.

As Deb said as this affects a fellow DISer prehaps we should be mindful of what comments we make.

Just because your British doesn't mean you can entry the U.S freely, you must eligible to use the VWP.

Yes a members shouldn't encourage other members to break the rules reguarding entry into the U.S

How do you know that he WASN'T eligible? If he had a British passport, no criminal convictions and had filled out his forms accurately then the only reason they would stop him from entering the country was personal opinion...not a very good quantifying factor.

Well the story said he was returned for not having a Visa, so i take it he must have needed one they don't just send you home for nothing

I think we are making a few assumptions and guesses here based on limited information. This is not really fair on the persons involved or any DISers who know them.

Until all the facts are know in this case please refrain from conjecture on the reasons behind this persons deportation.

I think yo ho ho was only trying to help those who are unsure whether to apply for a visa or not, so don't be too hard. And what's wrong with reading the SUN??? I love it !!!

The article (and I'm referring to the full article, not the soundbite within another article published in the Sun), does say he was sent home because he did not have the necessary Visa. The article doesn't explain why he needed a Visa, but let's assume it's correct. It doesn't follow that those DISers who have posted here recently also need one. My objective has always been to provide practical advice to those DISers on an subject about which I have some knowledge. I find it extremely frustrating and, frankly, offensive, that anyone would persist in pontificating on the matter. To repeatedly quote what is stated on the US Immigration website, with no actual knowledge of how that is interpreted or in what circumstances it is enforceable, is not helpful for those seeking advice to genuine concerns. By all means, express an opinion once, but have the intelligence to know when to let it go.

I really wish that was true. This isn't the first time this issue has come up and my belief that Yo-ho is more interested in points scoring than in helping a fellow DISer (on a matter which has the capacity to cause extreme anxiety) is the reason I've become so agitated. I've been posting on the DIS for over 6 years and I don't remember anything having frustrated me like this before.

I wonder if the man in question held a UK citizen's passport or a British subject's passport. If it is the former then the VWP would apply, in the case of the latter then a visa would have been necessary as I understand it. Either way, it was a lousy way to be treated, regardless of the type of passport.
