hi knicola, I see you are quite new to the boards so :welcome:

I have been through the whole Visa application from start to finish so should be able to answer any questions you have :)

Hi just wondering how long people have had to wait after they have had interview until they receive conformation that they have been grated visa? (re: visa for criminal record)

Ok, on the day of your interveiw you will take all your forms and passport to the embassy where you will take a ticket and sit down. When your ticket is called you will take your forms to one of many kiosks where they will check you have all the correct forms and that they are all filled in correctly.

They will then give you a blue form to fill out and tell you to take a seat, the form is for your address and contact details for where to deliver your passport & visa back to you (if you are granted a visa). Then it is a waiting game, you wait for your number to be called out again and this will be when you have your interview. I waited about 3.5 hours until my ticket number came up!

When your number is called you will need to go to an interview room (its just like the other kiosks but in a small room) where they will ask you a few questions about your conviction, and then they will tell you if you have been granted a visa or not. The whole "interview" part takes about 5 mins!

Hope this helps, if you have any other q's please dont hesitate to ask! :thumbsup2

You get told at the end of your interview. :)

oh right ok, its just someone had told me you wait 12-16 weeks to find out?? maybe this has changed.

This is from the US Embassy...

The average visa processing time for successful applicants is five business days, during which time the applicant's passport must remain with the Embassy. Applicants who are advised at the visa interview that their application requires additional processing should allow at least 8 weeks for this stage of the application process. Once processing is completed, the applicant will be contacted for the passport. A further four weeks should be allowed for the visa to be issued and the passport returned.

Applicants who are advised at the time of their interview that action on their application has been suspended under Section 221(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act should allow a minimum of 10 - 15 business days for their application to be processed once they submit the missing documents to the Embassy.

If for some reason they need more time to review your application then it could take up to 12 weeks to get your visa, but I doubt many applications can't be sorted on the day.

Ugh. I hated going to the US embassy. My advice would be to get a really early appointment (i.e. 8am) and join the line at around 7.15/7.30. That way you won't be hanging around for quite so long. It can often take 3-5 hours of just sitting and waiting listening constantly to the annoying man calling out the numbers. Our appointment was at 2.30pm and we left just before 6pm!

Edit: Most people get told whether or not their application is successful immediately after the second interview. However, some applications require "additional processing" and this will mean that you will NOT be given a decision at the embassy, but will be notified in due course. We were told our application was successful there-and-then, and then received our passports back within 5 days, but this was not for the same type of visa you are applying for. Whether or not you find out on the day will depend on the circumstances of your application.

Baz.... was that a visa for a criminal record??

Hi
Yes it was for Criminal Recd, this was my second Visa, both that and the first were 12 month ones.
It's generally your 3rd which is a 10 year one (so i'm told) :)

My 1st visa is a ten year one, I think they decide how long your visa will run dependant on circumstances.

well, my boyfriend has been for interview on the 1st may so now it is just a waiting game for email to see does he get granted a visa......
has any1 else been in the last few weeks that can tell me how long they had to wait???
(re criminal record)

Did they not inform him on the day if it had been pre-approved or not.I had to wait a few days for my last one but they did tell me at the Embassy it had been approved in theory.
I will be going for my third this year and will hopefully receive a 10yr one, as OrlandoMagic said earlier i guess each individuals circumstances has a bearing on the length of the Visa issued.
