I am not sure if I need a visa or not. On the visa waiver form you have to tick a box if you have ever been arrested for a crime of 'moral turpitude'.

In the past I have been arrested for 'taking a motor vehicle without consent' (26 years ago) and another for 'common assualt' (10 years ago)

I'm confussed as I don't know what 'moral turpitude' means.
In other words, will I need to get a visa because of my convictions or am I ok to travel on the visa waiver?

You will need to get a visa Bozzly.
Both of your crimes are ones of Moral Turpitude.

I did a search when I was looking into which crimes were classed as being of moral turpitude, and its seems as though most crimes are.

Assault and crimes to the person are ones their really interested in

DH was given a conditional discharge about 19 years ago after getting in a fight with a mate over a girl! ;-)
We've travelled 3 times with the visa waiver programme, never giving it a thought til the recent publicity. (plus the fact that I knew nothing about it until this year! ;-))
For our trip last month I nagged him until he contacted the court to see what they had on record. They rang back to say 'nothing'.
As it was we travelled, once again, under Visa waiver with no problems but I'd check with the court first to see what they have on record.

This is where people are slipping up though Alison,Even if you now have no record at Courts or police Records,You still need a visa,
In American Law They never wipe a slate clean as it were,I need a visa for a 24 year old minor offence, even though its not recorded anywhere
Yeah you may be able to get away to travel on the waiver sysetem but it wont be legal and chances are small of getting caught but if found out thirl be biiiigg trouble!

Well, DH has a terminal brain tumour so,although it sounds daft, I'm not even sure what happened all those years ago (if anything) - especially as I never knew about it until now and we've been married 9 years! I made him check up 'just in case'.
We went through the channels the Embassy said - we rang them first to find out so, far as I'm concerned we're ok. I'm a nurse, not a court official so, if we went along the correct route and they found nothing I'm certainly not going to argue! :flower:
Saying that, just as we were about land I noticed, on the back of the green form, the tick box about whether you're in good health! Now, on that one maybe we should have applied for the visa........ Virgin said not tho as there is no ongoing treatment. Crikey, there'll be some revenue from that one if everyone not in good health has to get a visa! Has anyone else ever followed this one up?
We would just not be able to travel to the Us anymore as the Embassy trip sounds an absolute nightmare - with no apparent help for the disabled (the guy there was pretty unhelpful on the phone anyway!)
Good luck with your visa Bozzly :goodvibes
:grouphug:

Got to thinking on the school run and guess there's a big difference between knowing what you've done and thinking what you might have done  Ho hum :)
Anyway, back to the health question. I know it's on a different tact to the OP but has anyone had experience of having to get a visa for health problems? We already have to take out extra insurance, collect doctor's letters etc, having to go down the line of a visa too, with the extra expense and military planning it will require will just make the whole trip to the US a nightmare :confused3 Anyone been to DLP.....? ! :teeth:

Hi alison
Just thought Id let you know,The embassey requires a lot of waiting,Bit their really friendly I was dreading the trip after speaking on the phone to The scottish lady who I booked with..
Its not as bad an experience as everyone thinks!

It's not that I expected them to be awful Ian, it's the hanging around that DH wouldn't be able to do, combined with the added expense of me having to take him, taking DD out of school to accompany us (as we have no family to drop off / pick up from school etc), the cost of having to stay over as it's too far for him to travel in a day and then the loss of earnings for the time it takes for him to recover from the trip!
I thought that there would be special facilities for disabled people but apparently not - unless you are below 14 or over 80 you have to attend. I was even told that I wouldn't be able to attend until I pointed out that I was DH'S registered carer and had read that I could on their site.
Given all these variables, if we had to make the journey for health reasons, the cons would definitely outweigh the pros in our situation so we'd switch to travelling elsewhere :flower:
We booked a 3 week trip to Orlando this year in order to compensate for the 3 days either side of travelling we knew DH would be out of action. This worked well and just meant DD and I leaving him in bed for a couple of days until he was feeling better whilst we 'chilled out' To have to spend another few days and more expense for a visit to the Embassy just wouldn't be worth it, either financially or physically. :grouphug:
Bit longwided that - sorry  Hope you have a fantastic trip.
Alison

Alison,
I looked up the details re the health bit on the waiver forms. I can`t remember all the detail however I think it was along the lines of contagious deseases.
Good luck

merylj

how would people know if you have commited one of those crimes,do they have everyones records :earsgirl: :cheer2:

Thanks for that Merrylj
I 'took the question' over to the DISabilities forum and we more or less came to the same conclusion :-)
It would be absolute chaos if everyone with a health problem had to apply for a visa!
At least I can now dream about another WDW vacation even if we don't make it :-) :-)
