Is it possible to put a visa gift card down as payment on a visa bill? (SWA)

I really don't have anything I need to buy with it and would rather apply it to our next bill. We had some unusual expenses this month.
Well, I suppose I could use it toward grocery shopping if I had to.
Just curious, has anyone done this?

I've never tried it, but would be surprised if it is allowed. Usually you can't pay a credit card with another 'credit card', and while what you have is a gift card it is treated and processed similar to a credit card.

Your idea of just using it for groceries would be easier...just put that grocery money you would have used toward the bill instead.

I agree- I think it's best to use it for necessities and then pay your visa bill with your checking account. I used to work for a bank and we never allowed customers to pay credit card bills with other "credit cards".

No. You cannot use a gift card to pay your outstanding balance on a credit card.

Use the gift card to pay for groceries and other necessities, like someone else suggested and then use the money that you would have spent on those items to pay your SWA Visa bill.

Or, there are cases where people who use "manufactured spending" on pre-paid cards to meet their spending threshold for new credit card offers. In their case, the prepaid card gets loaded with funds by using the new credit card. The person then withdraws cash from an ATM and uses it to pay the balance on the credit card bill. If it's possible to make ATM withdrawals using your Visa GC, then you could do this to pay your SWA Visa balance.

Wow, that sounds complicated. It's no problem to just use it toward groceries. I'm curious, not desperate. :lmao:

I doubted that I could but dh does the grocery shopping and often forgets to give the cashier coupons, gift cards, etc. If he remembers to use it, that would still work out the same as if we paid groceries on the visa then use the gift card toward the visa. Maybe I'll send ds14 shopping with him to remind him. :thumbsup2

Visa is a network, not a bank. A bank issues a credit card or gift card using the Visa network. You can't pay one back with money from another bank using the network, because one (or both) would have to eat the network fees.
